Jake Bailey files grievance, agent says Patriots’ suspension was unwarranted

The Patriots’ highly unusual decision to suspend punter Jake Bailey and cornerback Jack Jones is not sitting well with the players or their agents.

Jones’ agent had previously said his suspension was the result of a “miscommunication,” and now Bailey’s agent has said he’s fighting it on behalf of his client.

Agent Doug Hendrickson said in a statement to PFT that during his time on injured reserve Bailey has been fully engaged in all required rehab and treatments, and that Bailey was ready, willing and able to return to play before the Patriots suspended him.

“While Jake Bailey was on IR he never missed a single treatment, meeting, or practice,” Hendrickson said. “He was hoping to come off IR to play last weekend, but Jake was informed he was being suspended these last two games. This comes as a surprise given his full participation during injury reserve. We have filed a grievance to fight this unknown suspension.”

Bailey’s suspension could give the Patriots a justification for voiding his $2.115 million guaranteed salary for 2023, and given that Bailey had his worst season in 2022, it’s easy to see why Bailey would contend that the Patriots are suspending him not because he did anything wrong, but because the team wants out of his contract. Now Bailey’s suspension will be a matter for the grievance process.

  1. Belicheat in meltdown mode. He owes his entire career to Lawrence Taylor and Tom Brady. Two of the all-time greats.

  2. I’m sure the Beantown Troll would cry about how everyone under the sun is cheating against the Patriots.

  3. Patriots punting game was complete trash this season. Not a great combination with an offense that can’t score touchdowns.

  4. Pats fan here … Ready to move on from Belichick. He’s among worst GMs in the league. Good coach but can’t build a winning roster or coaching staff though.

  5. I don’t think that’s entirely true. While I’m not sure he’s a HoF coach without Brady, for years his defenses were synonymous with taking away the opponents best weapon and that doesn’t just happen. There’s also something to be said for coexisting with greatness, Phil Jackson wouldn’t be held in such regard if anyone could coach Jordan and it was as easy as saying “go play”. I think it’s too common to say elite guys only succeed when they have elite talent & elite guys who don’t succeed would do so with other elite talent around them

  6. Sounds like to me Bailey faked his injury and then didn’t come back ready to play. They probably shoiuld have just cut him outright.

Not sure what even happened to him earlier this year. He’s as good as gone anyway.

Almost impossible to be a punter and have a “back injury”, by the way. Been watching the NFL for 40 years.

Lots of “quiet quitting” with Millennnials and GenZ these days.

  7. BB went 11-5 with Matt Cassell. Took the Browns to the divisional round with Vinny Testaverde. Has 8 Super Bowl rings. You don’t accidently win 8 SBs. Went to three other SBs. Aren’t good coaches suppose to win Super Bowls with great talent?? Don Shula won zero Super Bowls with Marino.

  8. Bill needs a couple fall guys to distract from his poor coaching and dismal personnel decisions. Maybe the guy who made Matt Patricia an OC should have *his* contract voided.

  9. I really, really hope the Pats lose this weekend and miss out on the playoffs. Belicheat hasn’t done so well since ol’ Cheatin’ Tom Brady left town, has he?

  10. Tom Brady is nothing but a nice little system QB with a weakling little arm who has proven this year that he is NOTHING without elite coaching and elite playmakers around him. He’ll finish with a losing record and it seems only fitting.

Next time the fan club wants to hitch their wagon to a guy they call the greatest of all time maybe they should pick someone who isn’t a cheater and can do more than throw 3 yard curl routes. Can’t be that hard to do can it?

First of all, you have no way of knowing if this was Belichick’s idea or Robert or Jonathan Kraft’s.
Kraft likely didn’t make his money being a generous businessman. Most highly successful business people are considered closer to being the fiscally tight type than nonchalant with their money.

And yes, there’s no doubt Lawrence Taylor and Tom Brady are two of the all-time greats. But BB only had 1 Lawrence Taylor while he was DC and 1 TB as HC. So to suggest Brady won 6 SB and that BB was just along for the ride is utterly ridiculous. It takes an architect to build organizations that win multiple championships under one leader’s reign. Like him or not, in NE the Guy was and may still be, Bill Belichick.
By the way, the Deflate-gate accusations involved Tom Brady not “Belicheat”, as you put it. And to my knowledge Bill never broke his cell phone either.
Part of becoming a mature human being is acknowledging that even if you don’t like or respect someone, he may have skills or values that are impressive.

  12. Bailey was never hurt he just stunk, and Jones blew off his rehab appointments on a regular basis. You can get away with that in Pittsburgh, or Denver, but not in New England

  13. Only throws 3 yrd curl routes?!!
Even tb6 wouldn’t say something as stupid as that..

  14. The patriots will sign the disgraced ‘punt god ‘since he wasn’t charged with anything.

  15. I was pretty surprised when i saw these suspensions and was immediately suspicious about what was going on. If it comes out that Bill suspended these players even tho they didnt do anything wrong he should face serious consequences or the Union should throw a fit over this. Bill has done a lot of stuff to screw players over and suspending a player so u can not pay them their guaranteed money is too far.

  16. Bailey was arguably the best punter in football two years ago. Don’t know what he did to piss off the Pats but he will have no trouble getting work next year if he can still play.

Jones agent has admitted his client screwed up but claims it was a miscommunication. We will see how that shakes out; the kid looked promising while healthy.

  17. Maybe they need some help from Aaron Rodgers the cheater and his over-inflated footballs to get out of this mess

  18. Patriots are always up to some shady stuff.

Trying to place guys on IR or suspend them without cause to save a few bucks. That’s not below them that’s for sure

  19. Someone should tell those people who type the word “Belicheat all it does is tell us you’re a bitter fan of some franchises the Patriots owned for 2 decades. insert Colts, Steelers, Chiefs , Chargers (SD) they have no LA fans, and the entirety of the AFC east.

  20. A coaching staff treating a player like a second class citizen because they are injured?
    What is this 1960?

  21. The funny part is Bailey was one of Bills favorite guys. He gave him that contract when he didn’t have to. Something is going on there. Jones has a track record of trouble so we shall see there.

Can we stop with the BB GM nonsense. His last three drafts have produced starters on both sides. Yes, the offense has struggled but he hit on Judon. Hunter Henry scored 9 TDs last year, a handful more this year. Mills has been a starter. Aghelor and Bourne have had their moments. People are too stupid to understand the rebuild has been underway for a while. KC, Buf and Cincy aren’t that much better. Kelce will be 35 next year. The Bengals and Bills are going to have to start paying guys. The Pats have a ton of cash and not many free agents to worry about. Just need a OC.

  22. Why is everyone assuming the Pats are wrong here? Oh that’s right, they hate the Pats. Pats have been more than generous with money over the years. They’ve payed players who fell just short of incentives anyway’ for example. But if a player is cleared by the medical staff, yet refuses to play, who’s in the wrong? Maybe Bailey decided to quit for the year. If a rookie player doesn’t bother to show up for his rehab, again, who’s wrong?

  23. The Pats have a ton of cash and not many free agents to worry about. Just need a OC.
    ——
Yes plus new OT’s, a WR1, upgrade at C, a LB, FS and probably more talent on the defensive front.

  24. We have a dispute between a player and the team, and once again the only perspective that is provided is the player’s point of view. Where is the team’s side of the story? I guess I will have to go to another website to find that because it will never be on here.

  25. If a rookie player doesn’t bother to show up for his rehab, again, who’s wrong?
    ——
Werent there disciplinary problems with him at ASU? I remember that was a red flag for him coming into the draft and probably why he was a day 3 pick.

This is the wrong team to have that come up and that sucks cause he’s a really promising rookie and helped the Pats forget about JC Jackson.

  26. When Ben Watson was drafted by the Patriots, they would only offer him a six year rookie contract rather than the standard 5 year contract. Tom Condon his agent and former Patriots player never let another one of his players sign with the Pats. It makes no sense to come up with a fake suspension to avoid paying a player. Only players with no other option would sign with the Pats. Its a stupid as putting a defensive coach in charge of the offense.

  27. Brcause his 2M contract will make a difference? This guys out to lunch if he thinks NE is doing to void his contract.

So at the end of SB42, Brady threw a pass that was measured at 75 yards to Randy Moss. Supposedly there’s film of him throwing a pass 80 yards during a practice, bur lets just stick with what millions, not including yourself, saw. Try watching a game sometime. isn’t that hard to do.

  29. Brady will win his eighth ring this season with Todd Bowles, and there won’t be a single argument left to dispute the fact that it was all him these last 20 years. Belichick went 5-11 with Drew Bledsoe and the same players that helped Tom win his first ring. Let that sink in.

  30. I went to High School with a Vincent Terranova. Nobody uses their real name here. Too bad. You were a hilarious guy and a good hockey player.

  31. Sounds like to me Bailey faked his injury and then didn’t come back ready to play. They probably shoiuld have just cut him outright.
    ———

You keep claiming you know people in the organization. So this must be 100% fact.

  32. Lotta cracks emerging in the “patriot way” since Brady left. Winning cures almost any culture issues and it seems like NE isn’t immune to those things after all.

  33. Now over 30 posts from mostly fake Pats fans and Pats enviers on a throwaway Pats thread about suspensions. No other NFL team gets 10 posts on threads like this. Proof once again that even a still rebuilding Pats team scares the poop out of non-Pats fans throughout the NFL.

They’re assuming the pats are wrong, like you are assuming they’re right. They both are l, just what they are. Assumptions.

  35. ” Ready to move on from Belichick. He’s among worst GMs in the league. Good coach but can’t build a winning roster or coaching staff though.”

Somebody else built those rosters? 6 NFL tiles, 3 more Super Bowl appearances.

I really find it hard to stand short-sighted Patriots’ fans.

“What have you done for me lately?”

The guy built two different generations of rosters that each won three Super Bowls apiece, and some outrageously spoiled fans think this is easy to do, even though no other franchise has every done such a thing.

Yeah, sorry N’Keal Harry didn’t work out. I guess nothing else matters.

  36. They’re assuming the pats are wrong, like you are assuming they’re right. They both are l, just what they are. Assumptions.

The difference is, I didn’t condemn anyone or make assumptions based on an agenda. Instead of condemning the players, like others did the Pats, I just threw out a couple of ‘what ifs’ maybes or “what abouts?’. A little different from, ‘There go those cheap heartless Patriots.’

  37. Touchback will blame Roger for this…even though Roger had nothing to do with it

  38. I really enjoy reading the anti-Brady “system quarterback” argument. It is always brought up by some bitter fan of a team Brady and the Patriots abused for two decades. Bitter fans that can’t even state what losing team they follow and whose usernames never appear in any other stories that don’t involve the Patriots. In other words, a troll.

Is Brady a “system quarterback”? Who cares. Brady lead a Patriots franchise to more Super Bowls than any other quarterback. All teams should want a “system” QB that can lead them to six titles and three other championship games. I don’t care it’ll it is the coach, the owner, GM, QB, RB, or any combination of the above. Teams win championships. As Al Davis said, “Just win baby.”

For a QB that has a career throwing YPA of 7.4 yards which is a whopping 0.1 years lower than Montana and 0.1 yards better than a comparably noodle armed Marino, I think Brady’s little arm has served him well. I’ll take a smart QB/game manager with a very quick release that keeps moving the chains over a guy with a cannon for an arm who can’t consistently lead his team to victory.

    Keep on trolling!

  39. I’ve followed the Patriots forever. I don’t recall them suspending players in the past.

Bill makes his decisions based on what he considers the “best interest in the team”.

So, I believe these players definitely did something worthy of suspension.

And, as was posted earlier, their punting game this year has totally sucked.

Bill has gone out of his way in the past to help players get bonus money.

You made an assumption actually based on your agenda. You’re a fan of the team.

  41. Did this suspension impact this game? I’m beginning to think it might have. Folk is not a kickoff guy and can’t hit the EZ. There’s a reason why Bailey was the kickoff man.

I hope Bill has a good explanation for Kraft on this one.
