Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams left Sunday’s game with a back injury, but it looks like he avoided an injury that will impact his availability for Saturday’s game against the Jaguars.

Word on Sunday night was that X-rays on Williams’ back were negative and head coach Brandon Staley offered another positive update on Monday. Staley said, via Daniel Popper of, that an MRI showed a contusion.

Staley said that the team expects Williams to practice this week and that the “indication” at this point is that the wideout will be able to play in Jacksonville.

Williams’ injury led to criticism of Staley for playing the team’s starters in a game that would have no impact on their playoff positioning. The good news about Williams’ injury should help him avoid more of it this week.

  1. It was pretty stupid of Staley to okay Williams and Bosa and get them hurt in a meaningless game. Sean Payton really likes golf and he can play year round in LA, and has shown he is a QB whisperer. Herbert is a generational talent and is still on his rookie contract. Staley loses Sunday an Payton will be on line one.

  2. Why is everyone so horny for Sean Payton? He had a generational talent 1st ballot Hall of Fame Qb for 15 years and went to one Super Bowl. His record is pretty much the same as Mike McCarthy’s. Both regular season and playoffs. Payton slightly better regular season and McCarthy significantly better in post season. But Payton is everyone’s savior while McCarthy is generally regarded as a clown (an opinion I share).Look at the records rather than just parrot the talking heads.
