Interim coach Steve Wilks will get a chance to make his case for the permanent position in a Tuesday interview, but the Panthers are casting a wide net before making a decision.

As they seek to find a full-time replacement for Matt Rhule, the Panthers have requested interviews with three NFL assistant coaches as well as a former NFL coach.

NFL Media reports the Panthers have sought permission to talk to Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.

They also have scheduled interviews with former Lions and Colts head coach Jim Caldwell and former Colts coach Frank Reich, and owner David Tepper has had a conversation with University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.

Steichen is a popular interview candidate with interview requests from the Panthers, Colts and Texans, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

  1. Dorsey is not ready to be an HC. If you ask Bills fans, i bet they would say he wasnt ready to be an OC either.

  2. As a Bills fan, I don’t think Dorsey is ready to be a head coach. He’s struggled just being an OC as the season has gone on. He also doesn’t seem to have the temperament to be a head coach. Maybe he will learn as he gets more experience (Daboll used to be a huge hot-head too), or maybe he will never change.

If he gets hired to be a head coach I’ll wish him luck, but I’ll be expecting it to not end well. And I’m not just saying that because I want him to stay as OF or something. I mean, I don’t want him fired but I wouldn’t be that sad if he left. His offense and game planning has left a lot to be desired vs. Daboll. The run game is improved, but I think a lot of that is just Aaron Kromer, and Cooks development.
