Dolphins haven’t entered the playoffs with a healthy starting quarterback since 2008

The Dolphins don’t make the playoffs very often. And when they do, they don’t have their starting quarterback available.

Today’s news that Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out for Sunday’s game in Buffalo means that Miami will once again not have its starting quarterback in the playoffs.

The last time the Dolphins made the playoffs, in 2016, they also didn’t have their starting quarterback: Ryan Tannehill was injured, which means backup Matt Moore started the Dolphins’ playoff game, a loss to the Steelers in the wild card round.

The Dolphins haven’t gone to the playoffs with their starting quarterback healthy since 2008, when Chad Pennington started all 16 games in the regular season and also started the Dolphins’ loss to the Ravens in the wild card round.

The last time the Dolphins won a playoff game was in 2000, with Jay Fiedler as their starting quarterback.

  1. Thanks to the GM and front office, the Dolphins are always loaded with injured players and those who aren’t injure who won’t play anyway.

  2. It’s kind of a deceiving article given the Fins have only gone to the playoffs once since 2008.

They didn’t have health at QB 6 years ago and they don’t in 2022. It’s not really a bad luck story or anything when it’s 6 years apart and they could have fielded a playoff team at any time in between.

  3. Whoever selected Tua over Herbert set the Miami Dolphins franchise back at least 10 years.

  4. Not sure about the framing of this story. They’ve only made the playoffs twice since 2008, so yes, they’ve been without starters both times but “since 2008” makes it sound like more of a trend than does, say, “twice in 15 years”.

Best I can tell, in every playoff game they had from 1970 to 2008, they played their starter.

So, “twice in 50 years” would also be technically correct, but also not the whole story. I don’t think there is a story.

  5. Okay, great, now that we got the history lesson out of the way, could someone call Jay Fiedler to see if he is available on Sunday?

  6. Kind of misleading. The last time the Dolphins made the playoffs, in 2016, was the only time the Dolphins made the playoffs since 2008. It’s not like they’re in the playoffs regularly with injured QBs.

  7. Beantown Troll is well known for his expressions of joy at the injuries of other players. Still waiting for his expressions of happiness over Hamlin and Tua.

  8. For all the yapping from their fans all season, you’d think they were defending champs. Odd to see they havent won a playoff game in more than 2 decades.
