Colts owner Jim Irsay announced Thursday night that the team has completed an interview with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. It is the first known interest in Bieniemy this hiring cycle.

Bieniemy has been a popular candidate the past four hiring cycles.

According to USA Today research, Bieniemy went into this year’s hiring cycle having interviewed for 15 head coaching positions with 14 different teams.

He is in his fifth season as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator after five seasons as the team’s running backs coach.

Bieniemy was with the Vikings from 2006-10.

The Colts are seeking to replace Frank Riech, who they fired Nov. 7.

Their interview list includes Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and Colts special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone.

  1. Please hire him Jim. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say we’re tired of this story every season.

  2. After 15 interviews with 14 different teams, it’s getting harder to believe that the only reason he hasn’t gotten an HC job is the color of his skin.

  3. Kliff Kingsbury got a headcoaching job for failing to develop Mahomes while Bieniemy helped develop him into the best QB in the game and can’t get one. I can’t quwite figure out why?

  4. KC is willing to throw in a 1st round pick to take him…. Maybe even Patrick Mahomes…. That’s how bad they want the EB distraction gone…

  5. I think anyone could run the offense for Mahomes and look like a genius. I’d pass on working for that freak Irsay however beggars can’t be choosers & he seems like a good dude who deserves a shot.

  6. Jets should hire him as offensive coordinator if he doesn’t get a head coaching gig and Bienemy should accept it. Andy Reid casts a large shadow and I can’t recall one successful head coach who was an offensive coordinator under him.

  7. Why does a head coach have to come from an OC or DC? Those skills do not represent the ability to run a team. A great head coach is a leader who can put together a coaching staff , winning atmosphere, team first attitude. I know, I know…good luck these days…

  8. Bieniemy is handicapped by HC Andy Reed being the true OC for KC. On the occasions when KC offense is throttled by a defensive scheme, Bieniemy is often slow to make adjustments. Fortunately KC has highly skilled players to overcome any deficiencies by the OC. He is good in his current role, but my gut tells me he would end up like Josh McDaniels as a HC – the Peter Principle.

  9. This guy has consistently been among the top coordinators the last 5-6 years. Since he’s been a top coordinator, many others have been hired and already fired. Given the high percentage of misses in the hiring carousel, you think by now someone would just go with the obvious best candidate. It’s almost absurd to see the Matt Paticia’s and Josh Mcdaniels’s get chance after chance, and continue to fail, but Eric hasn’t ever been afforded one chance. Hopefully Jim Irsay sees the light and hires this guy. Eric Bieniemy’s resume is so much better than a Frank Reich or any other coordinator. In fact, there’s not a single resume that’s in the ballpark with Eric. I get it, winning isn’t the top priority for every owner, but Bieniemy is a no-brainer.

  10. This actually may be his cycle to get a job. The only issue is what happens if the team he’s coaching regresses or stays the same? That’s a death sentence in this league unless you’re one of the top dogs regardless of skin color. Colts would be nice because they have a good RB and a decent defense. Downfall is they have zero starting QBs on the roster aside from Ryan and at this point he’s a bridge or a backup.

  11. When you’ve interviewed with close to half the NFL and you haven’t gotten a HC gig yet you’re just flat out not impressing anyone and aren’t cutout for it.

  12. We’ve considered all other options, and find the best candidate to be Jeff Saturday after he expertly led us to a dismal finish to the year, including blowing the biggest lead in NFL history.

What? So, when the offense sputters, it’s Bieniemy’s fault and when it’s thriving, Reid is at the controls? How would you even know these things? All I know is what I hear, you guys say he doesn’t call plays while Reid and Mahomes insists that he does. For somebody who doesn’t call plays, he sure is pretty active and yapping in that mic every time they show him on TV. If not calling plays, what the heck is he doing then?

  14. It really seems that EB just isn’t good in interviews. Would really like to be a fly on the wall in one of them.

    =======
There’s this NFL head coach in Jacksonville, currently has his team in the playoffs with Trevor Lawrence as his QB.

Previously won a SB with the Eagles.

Some unknown character, I forget his name too. But he was an OC under Reid in Kansas City.
