Could Tom Brady end up in Miami, after all?

Last year, the Dolphins were ready to move on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and to welcome quarterback Tom Brady (along with coach Sean Payton). It ultimately fell apart, thanks in large part to the filing of a landmark race discrimination lawsuit by former Dolphins coach Brian Flores on the very same day Brady announced his “retirement.”

This year, Brady will be a free agent, unrestricted and unfettered in his quest for a new team. If he wants one.

Could he once again be in play for Miami? As one source with general knowledge of the various dynamics regarding all things Brady (a source who firmly believed Brady could land with the Dolphins back in 2020) put it recently, the possibility is “definitely on the table.”

It’s unclear whether the Dolphins would keep or move on from Tagovailoa. He’s due to make $4.738 million in 2023, the final year of his rookie deal. The Dolphins could keep him on the roster, as the backup to Brady — if Brady does indeed finally join the Dolphins.

Tagovailoa also could be traded, if the Dolphins were to find a partner willing to assume the concussion risks that are now very real when it comes to putting Tua on the field.

It becomes a strange tension point between player and team. Tua, who has played very well this year when he has played, will likely want to keep playing. The fact that he will have gone three weeks without playing following his latest concussion shows how delicate the question will be in the coming months. It also suggests that the organization possibly has decided that Tua’s time in South Florida has ended.

Miami may be ready to move on from being the focal point for a national concussions-in-football debate that had largely subsided before Tagovailoa’s issues in 2022. Whether it’s Brady or someone else, the quarterback situation in Miami has become one of the biggest stories to watch in the 2023 offseason.

  1. Renting Brady for a year or two would only make sense if Tua is done. They have built a pretty nice young roster for whoever is the QB. Brady would get a major upgrade at the offense level, Bowles is such a poor coach. McDaniels can’t manage the clock but schemes a decent game.

  2. Poor Tua, finally starts to get it together on the field only to still not be ready to stay on the field

  3. If Brady wants to win another title soon, he should sign with San Francisco. The Niners would easily be the team to beat in the NFL for 2023. Let Purdy learn from him and, oh yeah, cut their losses with Lance.

  4. It makes sense. Brady would get the best receiving duo in the league, his kids are in Miami, there is an offensive minded head coach in place. And with the exception of the Bills it is a weak division. The Dolphins check all of the boxes for Tom.

  5. As a lifelong Dolphins fan, I’m all for it. But something inside of me feels weird/like the Dolphins purposely sabotaged Tua. That being said, it’s going to be strange seeing Brady in a Dolphins jersey, because Bob Griese ain’t letting anyone wear his retired #12 jersey. Brady better promise a SuperBowl or he’s going to be wearing a strange looking # on his chest.

  6. When in the history of the NFL have they kept out a player for 3 weeks due to a concussion? I’m interested to know.

  7. Brady will be a Dolphin. He wants nothing more than to jab the Patriots twice per year..
Miami is close to his kids, and with this roster he would be the final piece to this puzzle.

  8. This article is exactly why people will talk about this and spread this rumor. Certain people have even trying to oust Tua since day 1. All he did was lead the NFL in just about very single passing QB category yet he continues to get replaced. Enough of this already, Miami QB for 2023 is Tua !!

  9. Better option than the Raiders, but if Purdy is the reason the 9’ers lose, he’ll probably be in SF. Could stay in Tampa, but this is a sinking ship

  10. Unfortunately for Tua, he just does not have the health. Ross wants Brady. Grier will find the cap space. Buff vs Miami 2X will be entertaining.

  11. I’m sure former Miami Dolphins QB Bob Griese would gladly lend his retired #12 jersey to Tom Brady if the opportunity should present itself.

  12. Unfortunately, there are not that many options after they gave away their future for Cheetah and Chubb…

  13. Ah yes. The offseason is upon us I see as we get pelted with hypothetical after baseless hypothetical scenario.

  14. Why is everyone convinced he would want to leave Tampa after all?

With health, they have a championship roster and he *apparently* likes it there?

  15. I think they should keep Tua if they get Brady. He’s still inexpensive and would be a fantastic backup. You could exercise the 5th year option to keep him thru 2024.

Why wouldn’t you keep him? You’re not committing to any serious money by doing that

  16. Maybe if they had diagnosed him with a concussion, instead of “a back injury, wink wink” the first time, he wouldnt have gotten the second and third ones. After destroying his brain they will then decide he is too damaged and move on from him, lmfao. The Dolphins will always be a trash franchise.

  17. Trade Tua? I looked up “damaged goods” in Webster’s and there was a picture of Tua. What team would give up draft capital for a guy who’s one hit away from possible permanent brain injury.
    “No tanks” for Tua.

  18. If you keep Tua on the roster and are willing to accept the risks of playing him as a backup, then you’re OK with the concussion issue and he’s good enough to start. You either keep him as the starter and let him play out the 5th year of the deal (get him one of those big goofy helmets and make him wear a mouth guard) or you find a trade partner. There is no reason at all to keep him on the team as a backup if you don’t want him on the field. The guy just had one of the statistically best seasons in Dolphins history, he’s shown he can play in the NFL and honestly could be a star if he can stay healthy. If they don’t want him having concussions on their watch, find someone else that wants him or release him, don’t make him a backup to a 45 year old QB, that makes no sense.

  19. Getting rid of Tua in the last year of his rookie deal makes ZERO sense. Especially when it would be to move to a 45 yr old QB

  20. I feel bad for Tua, but the injury risk is more dangerous than, say, a bum knee. I’d move on, bring in Brady and draft a QB to wait in the wings and take over when Tom retires at 65

  21. Which is hilarious considering his ex already bought a house down that way too. Makes sense.

  22. No team is trading for Tua who is one concussion away from never playing again. Secondly, I think the Bills would enjoy an opportunity to playi against TB twice a year.

  23. I think he’s still holding out hope that maybe one day he could suit up for the 49ers. That could actually have an opportunity to happen if Purdy were to crash and burn in the playoffs, and if they go one and done, but outside of that happening I don’t think they’re interested. Look at it this way If Brady were to take the field for the 49ers right now for the playoffs they’d be Superbowl favorites, and they’d probably win it all, so the thought of them bringing him in next year if they flame out this year isn’t as far fetched as it might seem. If Purdy comes back to earth it’s a possibility, but if he continues to win and impress people there’s no chance he’s there so yea I could see Miami. Where he won’t be is back in Tampa

  24. Tom Brady’s QB rating is middle of the pack. Miami would on the surface be the best place for him. SF is not going to use him nor are most teams. LV needs to build on youth at QB and build an O-line. Not a logical fit nor a desirable one for a 46 year old quarterback. Miami just needs to make sure they get better on the offense line.

  25. As much as I love having Tua as our quarterback & hate the idea of Brady in aqua & orange… I must now admit that Tua’s time as a Dolphin has come & gone now sadly. 😕🙁 would be nice if we could actually draft someone… 🐬

  26. The Dolphins made a huge mistake drafting Tua in the first place and now, having suffered at least 3 concussions in one season, Tua should never step on a football field again. I would love to see TB12 in Miami, with all the offenseive tlanet the team has accumulated!

  27. That could be awesome for the Dolphins but given the Dolphins brass and how they handle things, they will most certainly fumble something along the way.

  28. If we begin with the premise that Brady’s only goal is to win Super Bowls, then the conclusion is that he would prefer to play in the NFC where the path to the Super Bowl is less arduous. There are two landing spots. The best situation, by far, is San Francisco, a team loaded with Hall of Fame talent and Brady’s boyhood team. His arrival there would complete his life circle and make the Niners the odds-on favorite next season. The far less likely spot is New Orleans — lots of talent on both sides of the ball as well — and a meeting with Sean Payton. That’s a longshot. An even longer shot, but one Brady might consider in order to be in the NFC, is a return to Tampa Bay. If his NFC options don’t pan out, then Las Vegar and Miami come into the picture. Brady’s decision and speculation about it will dominate the off-season. Duh.

Brady will be a Dolphin. He wants nothing more than to jab the Patriots twice per year..

Bring it on! Bill totally owns that guy. 70 passer rating lifetime vs Bill. Lower than Tebow and Hoyer lolololol

  30. Remember Joe Willy Namath his last year with the Rams? Gonna look like “De ja vu all over again” (thanks Yogi!).

  31. Why? Brady put up a worse record against a far inferior schedule. Miami is due next year to play a tough schedule with the NFC East and AFC West on the docket. Doesnt get any easier. Tampa’s supporting cast is every bit as good on paper as Miami’s Tom just doesnt have it anymore. Incredibly silly move if youre the Dolphins.

  32. If it were S. Payton they were considering than a vet like Brady or Rodgers makes sense. But with McDaniels system if they move on from Tua than going after L. Jackson is the best play. If you imagine having the WRs along with some decent backs and having try and defend his running ability? They want to compete for a title than Jackson is the answer in McDaniels system.

Step 1 is win this Super Bowl.

With Allen you will maintain competitiveness, but the team won’t always be a juggernaut.

The team will end up with issues eventually (cap, injuries, free agency). Win while you can.

Wishing Brady into the division looks a lot different if the Bills were to lose their 5th Super Bowl or something like that. Winning now is the best way for it to not matter.

  36. With health, they have a championship roster
    ________

If “health” includes being able to turn the clock back 5 years or so then okay. But they’re an old team at lots of positions where you really want to be young.

  37. TB had some good games this year but the Father Time cracks are definitely showing.

He’s limping into the playoffs from the worst division in the league.

Phins are in a tough spot. Tua is done. 3 concussions in one season?

  38. I generally don’t complain about the owners as much as others. But, they have no shame. Houston fires another minority coach after one year while at risk of a potential discrimination lawsuit and Miami might get Tom Brady after it fired a minority coach who refused to break tampering rules which started the whole case.

    Good grief, no shame.

Again with the QB rating the most useless stat there is.
“Joe cool “ QBR vs a BB defense is 68.1. Tebow and Hoyer must be better than him too.

  40. Keep Tua as a backup to help him to heal and be evaluated in the upcoming year. Brady would be a great mentor as a starter during that time as well and then Miami can decide what is the best decision for the following year without huge risks involved.

  41. This is perhaps one of the dumbest rumors why would Tom Brady who plays his own style offense want to be coached by Sean payton?

  42. This article is exactly why people will talk about this and spread this rumor. Certain people have even trying to oust Tua since day 1. All he did was lead the NFL in just about very single passing QB category yet he continues to get replaced. Enough of this already, Miami QB for 2023 is Tua !!

    —-

Right, he continues to get replaced because he can’t stay healthy. Doesn’t really matter how good you are if you’re going to miss half the season every year. You need someone more reliable. And concussions become an even bigger problem after a player experiences multiple. They’re less of a freak accident than other injuries because banging your head on occasion in the NFL is sort of unavoidable.

  43. He’s washed up. I wish he would just retire already. It’s nauseating watching the goat play mediocre football. Going to Miami will be uglier than Montana’s last year in KC. But I guess that’s Tommy’s role model so I guess he’d rather burn out.

  44. Even if or when Tua comes back, there will be more hits and more concussions. I cannot see him playing 17 games plus playoffs without being knocked out at least 1-2 times a year from this point moving forward.

  45. The AFC East was the toughest division in football thru about week 13. All 4 teams were playoff eligible at one point. It will only be stronger next year. The Jets and Pats will be better on offense. I think Tom retires. He isn’t moving away from his kids unless it’s SF. Sorry LV.

  46. It’s like a musical chairs game to see what team comes up empty hoping to get “one more good year” out of Brady. Looking at this season he’s clearly already in that stage all aging greats enter where he can look just fine one game but then be completely off the next. His highs are still very good but there are now lows that he never had before. Everybody remembers that Kobe scored 60 in his final game but he averaged only 17 a game that final season.

  47. How do all you people have the free time to make comments about Tua and his health?? I mean it’s obvious all of you are neurologists and medical physicians based on what I am reading. You must be busy saving lives and performing brain surgery. How could you possibly know what Tua health is other then reading the garbage spread in the media… the next article will be that Tua has a brain tumor from a concussion and you will all spread that rumor.
Brady is not an upgrade over Tua at this point. And any REAL Miami fan would not support that choice either. Enough nonsense

  48. My bet is the Niners or the Raiders. The Raiders could win their Division with Brady as their QB, same with Niners.
Dolphins even with Brady aren’t getting by the Bills and the AFC is not a weak Division as one moronic poster called it.
Funny though how Dolphins fans are drooling all over it after they’ve been saying he sucked for years. Tom is only chasing rings at this point and the Dolphins aren’t a better choice than the Niners or Raiders.

  49. I think Tom retires. He isn’t moving away from his kids unless it’s SF.

    ——-

Giselle moved the kids to Miami….so playing in Miami would make perfect sense

  50. Short of Tua playing 2023 taped up in bubble wrap his career in Miami is done. There is just too much uncertainty about his head which is apparently made of glass. There will be another QB1 starting for the Fins & not necessarily Brady…though I wouldn’t doubt it. Tom was set to go a year ago & the it sounds like that channel is still very much open if he so chooses.

  51. I meant Lindros missed a ton of the playoffs, not held out during a series. He came back during that series and took a cheap shot from Scott Stevens, surprise surprise, and that was the end of his dominance & he was a FORCE.

  52. The Raiders could win their Division with Brady as their QB, same with Niners.
    ________

The Niners just won their division without him and the Raiders don’t top Mahomes and the Chiefs with him.

  53. In my opinion, Tua should call it quits on playing. I can’t imagine my third child, born a month apart with him, in this position. As a parent it’s gut wrenching. The Dolphins should help him by cutting ties via trade or otherwise.
Ultimately, the decision is his to make

  54. Hopefully he will end up down here next year. And the trade for Tua idea just snuffs out the delusion that he is not some elite franchise QB. What is a team going to give up for him? A third? nothing substantial unless he comes in a package with Coach McDaniels, T Hill, and a healthy T Armstead.

  55. I understand the allure of visiting and living in Miami but why would Brady want to go to a team that has a much worse roster than his current team?

  56. Without Tua’s concussion problems, it would seem like an insane idea. How much does Tom have left?

With a 33 wins to 3 loss record against them…yep, they sure do “own” Brady.

  58. Brady is WAYYYYYYYY too smart than to want to play BB twice a year. He knows that if anyone knows his weaknesses it’s BB.

On top of that he’ll have to face the Bills twice a year and a pretty good Jets D twice a year. And then face young QBs like Mahomes, Burrows and Hebert in the playoffs?

Personally I don’t see the appeal of Brady (anymore). In the weakest division in the NFL he couldn’t even carry a team to a winning record and barely got to the playoffs. That doesn’t bode well if you think you want him to play in tough division (which the AFCE now is).

Father Time has won (as he always does), time for Brady to ride off into the sunset before he embarrasses himself.

  59. Wasn’t it supposed to be Sean Payton and Brady? So where is Sean Payton going and do they need a QB?

  60. Brett Favre claims to have 1,000 concussion in his career and you are ready to throw dirt on Tua’s career after 2? Can’t wait to for this Gentleman to make you all eat crow once again. Tua 2023.

    ———-

Easy……to stick it to BB twice per year.

  62. I would take Carr over old man Brady. I’m sure McDaniels could do a decent job with Derek.

  63. What many are missing is that the Dolphins were offering minority ownership in the previous attempt that was effectively scuttled by Brian Flores. Brady knows that there’s not much gas left in the tank but he may be able to help the team short-term. However, the obvious real attraction to him is a slice of the ownership which represents a significant long term revenue generation opportunity.

    ———–

I agree cracks are showing, but are Tampa limping in? Brady and team seemed to play their best games in the last few weeks after showing nothing for most of the season.

If Brady can play at that level for 3 weeks he could find himself back in the Super Bowl.

  65. That sounds like an okay place to retire but a hard place to compete. Having to deal with Allen in Buffalo and the tough defenses in NE & NY would be hard labor, and the latter two teams are an offensive adjustment or two away from being contenders.

As others have said, SF makes the most sense from a competitive standpoint. He’d have a straight line to the Super Bowl. But somehow every scenario feels like fan fiction at this point.

  66. Sean Payton and Tom Brady to the Cardinals in 2023. Kyler Murray to the Dolphins. Tua can go work at a Foot Locker somewhere.

  67. I read an article on here yesterday about how Todd Bowles wasn’t worried about Brady retiring. My first thought “yeah, he probably shouldn’t spend too much time worrying about that, because retirement or no retirement, there is no way Todd Bowles will be coaching him next year”.

Miami is possible, but my guess is they give Tua one more chance next year with nine months to rest his brain and Brady winds up with McDaniels in Las Vegas.

  68. Brady would jump in a heartbeat to the 49’ers if that opportunity arises….. close to mom& dad & sisters, playing for his childhood team…. Probably be great for both the other QB’s to boot in seeing an old pro in action up close & behind the scenes….. gives them time to learn without pressure of having to perform right away
Miami &Raiders are great alternatives for him to fall back on with BOTH having their perks…. Be interest to watch it unfold

  69. As a Bills fan I consider Tom Brady the #1 priority for Ross in Miami now – he’ll stroke a check for whatever Tom asks for to INCLUDE minority ownership. The question is will it happen? IDK because Ross has a way of screwing things up just look at the Jim Harbaugh mess – he would’ve been the Miami HC had Ross not placed his college alma mater in Michigan before the NEEDS of his own professional sports franchise! Not to mention this current Tua-Brady-Payton-Flores fiasco!!

  70. Will Tyreek move in with Brady though…that’s the question.

Everyone is overlooking the obvious…Tom is a Michigan Man. He’s going to go to The Lions, join Dan Campbell, and it’s going to be “Let’s F-ing Go Bite Off Some Kneecaps!!!” in Detroit. It’s obvious right?

Seriously Tom, why not? I know it’s not what some might call a stacked roster, but it’s not bad. They have a good o-line and o-line coach to help keep you upright. I know you can take a stacked roster to the Super Bowl. I’m not asking you to join a roster in full rebuild. I’m asking you to take a decent roster in a place that has never won a Super Bowl, and bring one home for them. It’s not exactly a stacked division. Minnesota has won 13 games on a -3 point differential. The Packers may lose Rodgers. The Bears just earned the #1 Draft Pick. You have the Michigan thing going, and you’re single now. You can live wherever you want. I know you said no more cold, but most of the games are indoors. You’d be a Hero. They’d rename Detroit Bradytown. C’mon man. Don’t just parachute into a really good roster. Take on some sort of challenge. You’ll even get the Thanksgiving Game each season. What do you say Tom? Are you still into some heavy lifting? Doing something that would really mean something?? At least think about it. This has to happen.

  71. Brady may be looking for a three year contract, guaranteed, and not under market, given what happened to all that good good crypto. He’s going to want to doge and shib his way back from the digicoin abyss. The safety net just left with the jiu-jitsu instructor.

  72. Everyone saying Brady should retire. There may be a reason why he isn’t (and possibly part of the reason his marriage fell apart). He and Giselle own almost 2 million shares, shares that are basically worthless in FTX. They were both brand ambassadors as well. I have seen estimates of $40-50 million that Brady lost. His TB12 company is also struggling (He got a $960k PP loan in 2020). Since they were ambassadors both he and Giselle have been named in a couple lawsuits as well.

I honestly think that he knew FTX was in big trouble and is one of the reasons he unretired.

  73. Tommy don’t want none of Bill and the rest of the AFC Beast. He ran away like a coward when the division started to emerge from its 20 year slump. And Bill owns him why would he want a piece of that twice a year? 🙂
