The Broncos have the first interview with Sean Payton.

They will meet in-person with Payton on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Per NFL rules, Tuesday is the first day Payton can meet face-to-face with teams.

The Broncos will meet with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris later that afternoon in Los Angeles, per Schefter.

Payton is the big fish in this coaching cycle, and of the five openings, three teams want to talk to him. The Texans and Cardinals also have requested permission from the Saints to interview Payton.

Payton, 59, went 152-89 in the regular season and 9-8 in the postseason with a Super Bowl title in 15 seasons in New Orleans. He stepped away from coaching this season and worked for Fox but looks ready to return to coaching.

The Broncos already talked to Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and former Stanford football coach David Shaw. Harbaugh had a virtual meeting Monday, and the Broncos met with Shaw on Wednesday.

  1. So they will meet with the candidate they really want and comply with the Rooney Rule on the same day!

  2. so far peyton is doing what he suppose to do by interviewing with other teams….but he will end up in LA…

  3. Almost sixty years old and he’d been mediocre the past ten despite having a good roster.
Any team that gives him a job deserves the failure it’s going to get.

  4. Payton’s already in L.A. and won’t be leaving. You want to talk to him, you’ve got to go see him.

  5. Payton had great success with Drew Brees in New Orleans. There isn’t much track record beyond that. Great players often make good coaches great. Harbaugh has done it in multiple spots. Harbaugh hasn’t won a championship. Payton has a championship. I still think Harbaugh is the better choice for Denver

  6. First ballot HOF QB Russell Wilson would be the best QB Payton ever coached.

Of course he wants the Denver job.

  7. The Rams defense has been consistently great. We lost games this year because the offensive line was decimated with injuries and couldn’t protect Stafford, who went into the season injured. Replay the final game against the play-off bound Seahawks. The defense isn’t why we lost. It was because the offense couldn’t put points on the board.

Not only that, but he also raises the playing level of all of the players around him. All you have to do is look at his defense as evidence of this!

  9. For you clowns bringing up Morris as a Rooney Rule interview, he will be the FOURTH minority candidate the Broncos have interviewed for the head coaching job within the past week.

  10. The Broncos have lacked soul ever since Mr. Bowlen passed. They need the head coach equivalent of James Brown. Because right now all they have is Bryant Gumbel.
