Texans complete interview with Ben Johnson

USA Today Sports

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had his first head coaching interview on Thursday.

The Texans announced on Thursday afternoon that they have completed an interview with Johnson. The interview was virtual as teams cannot start holding in-person interviews with currently employed coaches until after the Wild Card round is over.

Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator this year and the Lions had one of the league’s most productive offenses with him calling the shots. That has made him a popular target in this year’s coaching searches as the Panthers and Colts have also requested interviews with him.

Johnson is the first candidate to interview with the Texans. 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown are also on their list of interview requests.

  1. Nick Caserio
    – drafts an always injured Daryl Stingley over Sauce Garnder
    – drafts, including giving up 3 draft picks (!!!) to move up less than one round to draft John Metchie who had just torn his ACL (and later diagnosed with cancer).
    – drafts, including giving up 3 draft picks to move up less than one round (4th to 3rd) to draft Nico Collins whom in two years has barely played due to injuries.
That’s 7 draft picks, on a team begging for players, for 3 players that never play.
And then Nick Caserio not only interviews David Culley and Lovey Smith, but hires both, only to fire each one year later?!!?!
Caserio hasn’t done much with contracts but in his limited sample size he’s paying Laremy Tunsil $35M and made Brandon Cooks so expensive that he was untradeable for Caserio earlier this year.
What in the world are the fans of Houston doing, allowing this to happen?
Nick Caserio might be the worse GM in the league. Look at the facts Texans fans. Also take a look from the day Cal McNair took over, the Texans have been in absolute crisis at every level of the business and have not made one correct decision. Bob McNair was a below avg owner but from the day he died the Texans have been the worst organization in pro sports under Cal McNair.
Houston, you need to get rid of Cal McNair…which will also mean Nick Caserio. If not, expect another 30-40 yrs of this nonsense.

  2. Don’t hire him. He’s terrible. It’s the players in Detroit, not the coaches. I bet that guy needs help putting his head set on straight. Anybody else but him. I bet he can’t even read the numbers on the field. Hire Caldwell or someone instead. This goes for you other teams snooping around Detroit too. Leave the Lions alone.

I see exactly what you did there lol. I agree. He’s terrible!!!!!

  4. I’m sorry. I know there’s only 32 of these jobs, but you gotta be a bit strategic. The dysfunction within this organization the last 2 years. A terrible GM that can’t draft to save his life. A roster so depleted you’ll be lucky to win 3 games. After a 4-12 season, fired the coach. After another 4-12 season, fired that coach. After a 3-14 season. Fired that coach.

I wouldn’t touch this job with a 1000 foot pole if it were offered to me. And I’m no coach.

Another solid year in Detroit and the world will be his oyster.

  5. Well, dysfunctional teams gonna dysfunction. The thing is, Ben Johnson and any other HC candidate should run like hell in the opposite direction of an organization seemingly intent upon destroying as many careers as possible.

  6. The Texans need to START the interview process for a new GM.
The current one just warms a seat.

  7. Ben is gone. But the key coach isn’t going anywhere. Players want to play for Campbell and coaches want going to coach for Campbell. Lions offense will still be creative. 4th downs and trickery will remain. He demoralizes defense w these plays. Beats the opponent up physically. I am over the moon Lions play fun football that is already winning in year 2. Don’t care what anyone says. Deep runs in playoffs are coming as Lions D gets better with more talent this upcoming draft. Running game will be better too. OVER THE MOON after decades of suffering as a fan.

  8. On behalf of all Lions fans, we would love for you to stay in Detroit another year or 3 as this team gets better and better. Those teams like Houston, Carolina, Indy, Arizona are literal dumpster fires of bad management and terrible rosters.
