Brock Purdy, Skylar Thompson are lowest-drafted rookie QBs to start a playoff game

No rookie seventh-round draft pick has ever started at quarterback in an NFL playoff game. This weekend, two will.

Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson was the 247th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant at No. 262. They both went late in the seventh round, and they were the last two quarterbacks off the board.

They’re also now going to be the two lowest-drafted rookie quarterbacks to start in the playoffs. Purdy will start today against the Seahawks, and Thompson will start tomorrow against the Bills.

This is the first time since the 2012 wild card round that two rookie quarterbacks are starting in the same playoff weekend. In 2012 three rookie quarterbacks started in the wild card round: Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

Luck and Griffin both lost their wild card games; Purdy and Thompson are looking to become the first rookie quarterbacks to win a playoff start since Wilson in 2012.

In the common-draft era, only three rookie quarterbacks drafted outside the first round have won a playoff start: Wilson in 2012, T.J. Yates with the Texans in 2011 and Shaun King with the Buccaneers in 1999.

Both Purdy and Thompson were third-string quarterbacks who only became starters when the first- and second-string quarterbacks were injured. Purdy has played very well as a rookie, and the 49ers are are nine-point favorites. Thompson has been shaky as a rookie and the Dolphins are 13.5-point underdogs.

  1. Wilson used to be THE MAN. Then his ego took over and his teammates can’t stand him anymore. Both in Seattle and Denver.

  2. If the Ravens start Anthony Brown, Jr., (and many think they should given Lamar’s backup, Huntly, is injured), they will have started an undrafted rookie QB in a playoff game.

  3. Skylar Thompson is only starting because the Dolphins decided to have a starting quarterback and backup quarterback made of glass

  4. This just shows the injury prone nature of the quarterbacks backs on both teams. Neither Purdy or Thompson were the desired QBs to start this weekend, it just worked out that way because other guys got hurt.
I mean, woo hoo, injuries at quarterback continue to happen?

Actually, Huntley is also an undrafted free agent, so the Ravens will be starting one at QB in a playoff game regardless.

  6. I think you guys missed the key word in the article, DRAFTED, plenty of undrafted guys have started a playoff game and Kurt Warner won a Super Bowl.

  7. 32 teams, 7 rounds. 32 × 7 = 224. Last drafted would be #224. How can Mr. Irrelevant be drafted #262.

  8. leopardman They are called compensatory picks: Compensatory picks are draft selections awarded to teams based on a confidential formula used by the NFL.

    Compensatory picks.

  10. Mean while Mr Glass Bridgewater will sprain a finger holding the clipboard on the sidelines.

  11. I wish both the best. I’m sick of those athletes who think they are owed things by virtue of their draft status. The best players are the ones who use the most of their talent and simply listen to coaching and to stay within themselves. The worst are the ones who ignore and think they know it all. I hope the Dolphins’ coach doesn’t risk Thompson’s health like the coach did Tua’s all season.

Tony Romo was undrafted. I’d consider that lower
    _________________

Romo was a rookie in 2004. Didn’t go to playoffs til 2006-07 season. This article isn’t just about lowest QB draft picks in playoffs. It’s doing it in their rookie season. That’s the most impressive part, 2 seventh rounders in their rookie year.

  13. Thank you for the clarification rottenkid and jmayer. I forgot about the compensatory picks. Cleared my confusion.

  14. Johnny Unitas was drafted in the 9th round but there were fewer teams so he went 102nd in the draft.

  15. Football is way more than just the QB. It’s funny the way the classify the Win Lose record on the QB as if there is not other players playing
