Sam Howell will enter the offseason program as Washington’s QB1

PFT has confirmed a report from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports that Sam Howell will enter the offseason program as the Commanders’ first-string quarterback. However, this does not mean that Howell will be the Week One starter.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Howell will start the offseason as the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart. Although the team has informed a couple of candidates for the vacant offensive coordinator position that Howell is the guy for now, it remains an evaluation process — and Howell has to ultimately win the job.

The team will be discussing other quarterback options as well, we’re told. But, for now, Howell will be the top quarterback when the offseason program opens.

Can things change? Yes. There will be many veteran quarterback options this year, and there will be various dominoes that fall. Unlike past years, however, the Commanders have the luxury of an in-house option, reducing the necessity to find a new quarterback.

And there are real benefits to rolling with a player on his rookie contract. Having Howell under a fifth-year slotted deal for the next three seasons allows the team to devote resources to other areas of the roster, and to keep their own players who become eligible for new deals.

  1. This shows you how mismanaged they are. Anyone who watched this kid at UNC knows his game won’t translate at the NFL level.

  2. So Wentz and his big contract can be released with no cap implications and Heinicke is a free agent, so how could Howell be anything but QB1 in the off-season. Thanks for the obvious update Commodes braintrust. Coach-centric with this guy has equaled three non-winning seasons.

  3. They will wait and see if Carr gets released but I still believe Heinicke can develop into a good QB.

  4. Choice seems simple: Ride with a guy who has a great arm, good running skills, and great work ethic on a rookie contract in Howell and perhaps be able to afford to resign Payne, or spend $40 million on a guy who couldn’t win with the NFL’s top RB and one of the elite WRs on an offense coordinated by a HC who won multiple SBs in Carr. Seems simple to me.

Howell does not have a 5th year on his deal as he wasnt a 1st round pick and theres no such thing as a “fifth-year slotted deal”

  6. Lol, so you’re telling me you had a 5th rd qb play semi-decent against a team that was already locked and loaded for the playoffs with nothing on the line and now you’re anointing him the starter for next year?

Chances are you won’t have to worry about knowing whether any specific game next December has any playoff implications there Rivera

  7. Very smart move. Howell has a big arm, quick release, good mobility, throws a beautiful deep ball, and is wicked smart. Howell will be the surprise of the NFL next year. Meanwhile Washington can dedicate l QB cap dollars to building the offensive line.

He ran a ton in college and can’t throw accurately short or mid range.

  9. What else are they going to do?

You can get a retread, but honestly look at most teams, this doesn’t work. Best thing to do is continue to build the team, a complete team, and hope this guy, can become an answer. You don’t know. I can see blowing a ton of picks to move up, but if the guy isn’t there why go all in on that?

Hopefully they can develop someone, there’s not many better options available. Free agent qbs are free agents for good reasons.

  10. Heinicke is a free agent and Wentz is getting cut. Of course Howell is starting as QB1.
