Some may regard it as the stuff of miracles, but it was always the plan.

Legendary broadcaster Al Michaels spent the 2022 season making the new age of streaming feel as familiar and comfortable as possible to those accustomed to watching sports on TV. With the Amazon slate over and NBC broadcasting a pair of wild-card round games, Al Michaels will be back in the booth tonight, for the Chargers-Jaguars game in Jacksonville.

Via the New York Post, Michaels recently spoke with Richard Deitsch of TheAthletic.com regarding the first year of Al’s Amazon adventure.

Although the headline to the Post article paints with too broad of a brush (“Al Michaels rips ‘dreadful’ Thursday night Amazon games: ‘I can’t sell a used car'”), Michaels did indeed offer pointed remarks regarding one specific Thursday night game that prompted him to make pointed remarks in real time.

“I think I’m to the point in my life and career, having watched sports since I was six years old, I feel what the crowd feels,” Michaels told Deitsch, via the Post. “The Denver-Indianapolis game [in] Week 4 was a dreadful game. No other way to describe it. No touchdowns.

“In fact, at one point during the game, I said to [analyst] Kirk [Herbstreit], ‘Is it possible this game could be so bad that it’s actually good?’ He’d never heard that from a partner and went, ‘No!’”

The best broadcasters understand what the audience is thinking and have the guts to say it. That’s what Al did, all year long.

“We’re going to overtime and there’s a shot of maybe a thousand people walking out of the stadium,” Michaels said. “Then an overhead shot of people going to the parking lot. Kirk said, ‘I can’t believe it’s overtime and they are leaving.’ I said they’d seen enough. Sometimes you just have to beat the traffic. So, look, was that snarky? I guess, in a way. But you can’t tell me that didn’t reflect the feelings of a lot of people, probably the majority of people watching that game. . . . A lot of people said, ‘Al’s bored, Al’s pissed off that he’s doing this.’ Not the case. Monday nights, Sunday night, I did things like this. Maybe not to that degree, but I try to echo the feelings of what the fan feels because I’m a fan.”

Millions continue to be fans of Al Michaels. Even though it’s been known that Al will be back for tonight’s game, social media undoubtedly will be abuzz with his Saturday night return to NBC, partnered for the first time with Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy. (This also raises the question of whether there will be a first-ever “Dungy Slide.”)

Throughout the 2022 season, Amazon wisely embraced Al’s candor, even for .

“From the Amazon people, nothing but support,” Michaels told Deitsch. “I think they understood what this was. We’re making the most of it. I mean, you just can’t oversell something. Do you want me to sell you a 20-year-old Mazda? That’s what you’re asking me to do. I can’t sell you a used car. . . . I’ve kind of gone down that road a little bit in games that have been bad in the past. But this game was horrifically bad. What were you supposed to do at that point? And away I went.”

Tonight, away he’ll go. Hopefully, Chargers-Jaguars will be more entertaining than Colts-Broncos was. If it isn’t, Al will be willing to say what everyone else is thinking.

  1. He sounds like a cranky old man calling the games. Plus he can’t see anymore, gets the line to gain wrong all the time. Almost 80 years old, time to retire and let someone who needs the money take the job. No one watches games because of overpaid announcers. In fact a lot of people turn off the volume to not be distracted like the awful Monday night overpaid duo.

  2. I do not get the fascination with this guy. Does he know his beloved Rams are not playing? He’s probably a chargers fan now. He’ll be complaining about Jacksonville being too small a city. The hotel was only a 4 star. And heaven forbid only 40 points be scored in the game.

  3. For the wrestling fans out there Al Michaels is Chris Jericho and Bob Costas is Jim Cornette.

Michaels has maintained his style of announcing, but has adjusted to the times. He can mock some of the things like the 2Chainz post-game concert, but overall you can tell he respects the broadcast and knows he needs to adapt to changing fan interests.

Bob Costas thinks viewers want to hear about the 1949 World Series, not just who won, but for 5 minutes, during an important playoff game. He refuses to change his style and mindset at all.

Not saying one is wrong or right, but there’s a reason NBC moved on from Costas and Michaels had multiple offers near the end of his tenure.

  4. Al and Herbstreit never seemed comfortable in the Amazon booth. No disrespect to Tirico or Dungy, but I would have liked to see Al pair up with Collinsworth tonite.

  5. Bob Costas? To my recollection, Costas hasn’t called a game in years. I like to think I ended his career by suggesting the NFL get a restraining order against him. Btw, they’re both relics. Also, wrestling????

  6. Never liked Al Michaels for stabbing Boomer Esiason in the back on MNF back in the early 2000’s. I also agree with others commenting in I don’t know what the em fascination is with this guy, I mean he’s ok at what he does, but is far from a transcendent talking like Howard Cosel. He’s an old man who announces games. He’s not thoroughly knowledgeable about particular players or even the strategy of football. His voice is good and all but I just don’t get it. I guess supply and demand. People like him because he’s been around forever and they have no basis for comparison.

  7. Michaels has all the energy of a hairball trapped in the corner of a locker room. He should retire.

  8. I’ll get blasted, but I never cared much for him either. He worshipped the 49ers so much I couldn’t listen to him anymore.

  9. I prefer Al Michaels to the scratchy-voiced commentators. Could you imagine Tony Romo and Cris Collinsworth calling a game together? It’d be like rubbing sandpaper together for 4 hours.

  10. Can’t see anymore and gets the line to gain wrong? Um, you do know they have spotters with binoculars in the booth who provide that information to him, right? smh

  11. He’s right, that game was a travesty. I actually contacted the UN after that game because continuing to broadcast it was cruel and unusual punishment.

  12. Makes me wonder if Cris Collingsworth has anything to do with this (or maybe not)? Cris seems to comes across as patronizing towards Mike Tirico in some ways…

  13. That’s just Denver. They talk about being a big sports town, but when the rubber met the road they walked away from the Winter Olympics.

  14. If Michaels had any respect for the game, he wouldn’t get on television with that dye job, wearing a dandruff-covered sweater that looks like it came out of a 1990s Goodwill bin.

  15. Al sounded miserable AF every single Thursday night. I don’t blame him. The games were simply awful.

  16. I was born in the mid-50s and grew up with Al Michaels. Once upon a time he was dynamic, a great play by play guy, and full of knowledgeable insights. (Listen to his call of the Reds tying, then winning the NLCS in the 9th inning in 1972). One of the greats of all time. That said, I have to agree that he does should tired and cranky and bored. One of the reasons John Madden was so great was that he knew it was time, and though he hadn’t lost much off his fastball, he sensed he was done and he left. He did it with coaching, and he did it with announcing. Better a year too soon than a year too late

    Loved the Jim Cornette reference!!

  18. What does Michaels expect? He chose the stupid package of TNF … He is getting paid so he had to deal with it. NBC is bringing him back because listening to Tirico is worse.

  19. The Denver/Indy game projected to be a prime matchup in the offseason though. No one could have predicted those two teams being that bad this year. And no one did.

  20. Stockton, Albert and Kevin Harlan (on Sirius broadcasts) are pretty good still too.

Back to topic. I look forward to Michaels tonight. The Fox/CBS crews have been awful. I hope they find a way to add Collinsworth to the team maybe remotely.

  21. Family stopped watching SNF. Mike Tirico is terrible in the booth, absolutely awful. Glad Al is calling the Seattle/Niner game.

  22. I’ve been a fan of his for decades, but he’s starting to sound cranky. The games aren’t being played to entertain him, and when he starts griping about a game that bores him, I want to tell him to keep his comments to himself. Imo he’s not there to make money watching games and giving opinions and snarky remarks; he’s a play by play announcer.
