Brian Flores emerges as potential favorite for Cardinals coach

With the Cardinals hiring a G.M. well schooled in the Patriot Way, the next move could be to hire a coach with a similar pedigree.

The current rumor making the rounds in league circles is that Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill favors pairing with Monti Ossenfort former Dolphins coach (and current Steelers assistant) Brian Flores, as the successor to Kliff Kingbury.

From a football standpoint, Flores would fit the “exact opposite” formula that teams often employ when hiring a new head coach. Flores would bring discipline and accountability. He also would give quarterback Kyler Murray a wake-up call as to the work ethic and commitment that the quarterback position demands at the professional level. (Spoiler: It takes a lot more than four hours of study per week.)

For a non-football standpoint, hiring Flores would help both the Cardinals and the league within the context of the racial discrimination lawsuit filed last year by Flores against the NFL, the Dolphins, the Broncos, the Giants, and eventually the Texans. Former Cardinals coach Steve Wilks later joined the effort, claiming that he was basically hired to preside over a crappy 2018 season, and then to be fired.

Bidwill, a lawyer and former prosecutor, surely realizes the potential consequences of snubbing Flores — and the potential benefits of giving him the job. Throw in the fact that Flores has proven to be a damn good coach (better than Kingsbury, frankly), and it’s a win-win-win for the Cardinals and Flores and the NFL.

Of course, the NFL’s ultimate exposure in the Flores suit hinges in large part on whether the litigation plays out in open court — or whether it will be resolved by the league’s in-house, secret, rigged, kangaroo court. If it’s the former, the NFL and the teams named as defendants should be concerned. If it’s the latter, the legal issues necessarily take on less importance.

The NFL’s effort to force the case to arbitration is still pending, nearly a year after the lawsuit was first filed. Proving yet again that the wheels of justice often creep like a dollop of molasses on a frozen flagpole.

If there’s any chance the case will remain in court, hiring Flores won’t hurt the Cardinals from a legal standpoint. It may help them tremendously from a football standpoint.

  1. He is not a good coach. Pretty sure no one here actually thinks he would have taken the Dolphins to the playoffs this past year.

He had the same record as McDaniel had this year

  3. Wait, I thought Kyler was going to have input on the coaching hire. No way Mr Entitled would agree to a disciplinarian head coach.

Either way, as a 9er fan, I’m thoroughly enjoying this.

  4. Can’t wait to see that dynamic with Kyler Murray. He will kick butt, doubt Murray will take that for more than a season.

  5. “Throw in the fact that Flores has proven to be a damn good coach (better than Kingsbury, frankly)”
    ————–
Has he proven that or proven that hes better? Flores has a .490 winning percentage with no playoff trips, Kingsbury has a .432 winning percentage with 1 playoff trip.

  6. Here we go again. “the league’s in-house, secret, rigged, kangaroo court” which was mutually agreed to by both the team/league AND Flores. Fixed it for you. Both parties agreed to the arbitration process.

  7. The new GM will take his time and make sure it’s a good fit. If I wanted a coach to whip Murray into shape I’d take Eric Benimey.

  8. Great defensive coach. He’ll beat Murray down and flirt with QBs on other teams. His offensive coaching hires will be awful and the Cardinals will have massive roaster and offensive coaching turnover. Miami’s offense was high school JV quality by the end of 2021. Have fun with that, Arizona…

  9. It’s a safe bet that the Cardinals 76-year championship drought will continue indefinately

  10. Would be a great hire. That division is owned by Patrick the only shot you have is to be a solid team that doesn’t make mistakes and fight for wildcard spots.

  11. So the upshot of the non-football perspective is, hiring Flores makes the legal case go away, and that is best for the NFL and the Cards? How is that position not discrimination and a rigged process unto itself? Moreover, is that what Flores would want? “We’ll give you a job so you can make this whole mess go away.” The lawsuit should have no bearing on the team’s decision on their next HC. Any business owner should hire on merit and the best fit for the role, team, and their vision. Whether it is Flores or anyone else, it should be an equal playing field. Suggesting a decision of this magnitude could or should be based on PR optics and/or an ulterior legal motive given an open discrimination suit is an odd take.

  12. Flores took over dumpster fire and was rebuilding well.

He deserves another shot.. Josh got third chance with Raiders.

Yes. He had the same record in his third year of building the team as McDaniel had in his first year.

  14. Careful, he will sue you for being racist if you terminate him, even though you hired him in the first place.

  15. “The consequences of snubbing Flores….” Does every owner have to justify hiring any coach besides Flores?

    Sounds like extortion to me.

  16. Brian Flores will be Kyler Murray’s worst nightmare. An ex-Patriot, no nonsense coach that will hold him accountable and make the petulant child study.

You conveniently left out the 2019 record under Flores (5-11).

  18. If the objective is get someone who can maximize Murray’s talents (assuming they’re in there somewhere), this is NOT the guy to do it. Everyone saw Tua under Flores and Tua under McDaniel……………before the brain injuries.

  19. Good let’s give him a job cause he stomped his feet like a child. Let’s see what his excuse is this time when he sucks. Just like every other Belichick assistant

  20. Only problem with hiring Flores as coach is he doesn’t know what to do with an offense. Think that’s gonna make the franchise QB happy? On top of that, what happens if he gets fired early? He’ll be looking for Hue Jackson to join him in another lawsuit. I hope they do hire him. Adding him to the dysfunction will be good entertainment.

  21. Good luck on trying to hire a quality offensive staff 4 offensive coordinators and 4 offensive line coaches in 3 years the common denominator Flores, I know I lived it….

  22. Has he proven that or proven that hes better? Flores has a .490 winning percentage with no playoff trips, Kingsbury has a .432 winning percentage with 1 playoff trip.

Picked the above comment at random, though there are many making the same argument that are more egregious. One question for everyone that keeps going back to his sub .500 winning percentage- have you factored in that his owner was actively working against him during at least a portion of his time there? Major League is a great movie, but I think it would be a bit harder to overcome that type of roadblock in real life.

I left the 5-11 out because the comment I was responding said that Flores couldn’t have taken the Dolphins to the playoffs like they did this year. And I showed that he lead the Dolphins to two seasons with records that were the same and better, so I think he would have been able to lead the Dolphins to a 9 win season because he had done that 2 times before.

    ————————————————————————————-

No one who follows the Dolphins closely believes that he could have been successful. 0% chance the Dolphins offense would have even been half as good if he were here. He was also awful in big games. For example, he was 0-2 in win-and-in situations (McDaniel is 1-0) and in Flores’ last 3 games against Buffalo the total point differential was 117 to 37 in 3 losses. McDaniel was 1-2 with a point differential of 81-85.

Flores was one of the most inept coaches on the offensive side of the ball that I’ve ever seen. He was incapable of bringing in quality assistants (apparently because no one wanted to work for him) and flip flopped on starting QB’s and offensive coordinators constantly, so the team never developed any identity. Keep in mind that he had FULL CONTROL over the roster and coaching staff, so all those problems were of his own making.

Maybe he can be successful in Arizona. But the only way that would happen would be if he learned from his many mistakes.

  29. Great defensive coach. He’ll beat Murray down and flirt with QBs on other teams. His offensive coaching hires will be awful and the Cardinals will have massive roaster and offensive coaching turnover. Miami’s offense was high school JV quality by the end of 2021. Have fun with that, Arizona

As a lifelong finfan, good luck with that. Everything you say is true. He’s a defensive coordinator at best, but too salty for a HC.
