Mike McCarthy on Cowboys’ playoff schedule: “TV is king”

Mike McCarthy has become a rich man coaching football, and he understands where that money comes from.

Asked today about the Cowboys’ short work week thanks to a playoff schedule that had them playing on Monday night at Tampa Bay and then on Sunday afternoon at San Francisco,

TV is king. What are you going to say?” McCarthy said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “It’s not a concern. We’ve got plenty of time to get ready. We’re not stressed about it at all.”

McCarthy is right, and his reasoning is the same as that of his boss, Jerry Jones, who also said it’s a non-issue.

If anything, McCarthy said, his team might thrive in a short week.

“I think it’s going to serve us well. We’ll have less sleep, and we’ll be grumpy,” McCarthy said.

  1. Yes….move the game to Tuesday for “America’s Team.” Why whine about a Sunday game?….they could have made them play Saturday.

  2. Really really tired of this “short week” goop.
Sunday then Thursday is a short week.
    But one day?
    C’mon guys…

  3. Four teams, San Francisco, Seattle, Jacksonville and the Chargers played on a short week during the wildcard round while the Cowboys played on an extended week. The Giants are playing on the short week this week, as are the Cowboys. Dallas is acting as if they’re the only team that’s affected negatively by the schedule. I guess they’re already putting up their excuses for their loss on Sunday

  4. No clue why commenters are busting on McCarthy, he deflected the question asked of him and said it was a non-issue? Maybe you guys don’t like him/Cowboys, but jeeeezz.

  5. The new NFL/WWE get your popcorn, place your bets then swear none of the games are scripted.

  6. This America’s team stuff is bull crap!! Hope they get knocked out of the tournament on Sunday!

Joe Namath said it 50years ago ,It’s SHOW BUSINESS !

NO, Joe never said that, he was told that by Jets owner Sonny Werblin
who was a big entertainment mogul.

  8. Teams have played MNF games for decades, then played again 6 days later on Sunday. Why is this suddenly an issue ?

    Because its the postseason genius.

  10. It seems the short week is bothering the media more than anyone actually involved in the game.

  11. After Sunday, Buffet Boy will have plenty of time to chow down on an all you can eat extravaganza!

  12. McCarthy looks like the neighbor who can’t stop talking about the best way to smoke a pork butt, but gets kind of quiet when you want to talk about anything meaningful.

  13. “Not stressed about it at all”…I wouldn’t be stressed either if I knew that my season was going to end early once again after making a trip to San Francisco this Sunday. Heck, wouldn’t be surprised if they get bounced early again, Coach McCheeseburger gets canned again, and Payton “The one that got away *Jerry’s own words*”is rocking a big blue star on his shirt come next season. Stressed, why?

And this is different how , genius?

  15. Don’t forget during Spygate, a fan wanted to sue the Patriots for he felt like he was cheated out of watching football games. The NFL defended itself saying the ticket he purchased only granted him entrance and a seat to the stadium and not a true football game.

The NFL is classified as an entertainment business

  16. Giants are playing on the same 6 days rest. Only difference is Philly has 13 days instead of SF having 8.

So why is this story about the Cowboys at a 2 day disadvantage?

  17. Just curious if people even read the article before commenting.
    No?
Got it – didn’t think so.

  18. Not a cowboy fan but I don’t understand the comments. McCarthy is not complaining at all, he’s getting his team ready to play.. He was asked about the schedule and he answered what do you want?… Of course then again so many people hate the Cowboys and don’t use logic..

  19. They should know. I swear galf of their games are either in primetime or is the FOX GOTW

  20. Teams have short weeks during the regular season. No different here. Although I believe playoff football has a place on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, the league saw an opportunity to make more money and they took it. Players and teams agreed to this so there’s nothing to see here. I did wish they had the Super Bowl on Saturday or find some new holiday for the following Monday.

  21. It’s such a tired subject that most of the country is tired of being covered. We get it, back when TV was starting to cover pro football happened to coincide with Dallas having a good team so this Mickey Mouse America’s team nonsense started. All it means is that their “fans” started as a bunch of front runners – who aren’t real fans at all. Unless you had the misfortune of growing up in the devil’s inner thigh, also known as Texas you have no business rooting for that awful team. I expect the 49ers to dispatch them easily, but if not… oh what a gift it will be to watch the Philadelphia Eagles break the hearts of the so called fans of that team.

  22. On the sidelines, McCarthy looks like a guy that is just continually fooled by losing at 3-card Monty
