NFC East has three teams in divisional round, unprecedented since 2002 realignment

The Cowboys won on Monday night, the Giants won on Sunday and the Eagles had a first-round bye, which means all three teams made the NFC divisional round.

How unusual is that? It’s actually unprecedented, at least under the current format of eight four-team divisions, which the NFL adopted when the Texans became the league’s 32nd franchise in 2002.

The NFC East is the first division to have three teams in the divisional round under the eight-division format.

The last time three teams from one division made the divisional round was after the 1997 season, when the NFC Central did it: The Packers advanced to the divisional round with a first-round bye, while the Vikings and Buccaneers got there by winning in the wild card round. That year, the NFL had 30 teams evenly divided into six divisions, and six teams from each conference made the playoffs.

  1. Meanwhile Ron is looking under old sofas and inside abandoned refrigerators in the woods asking inanimate objects if they’d like to be his new OC next season.

  2. Can clearly be said that it was the best division in the NFL this year. It’s already certain that one of teams will be in the conference championship game, and it could be two if the Cowboys are able to pressure Purdy into mistakes.
Imagine if Washington had competent ownership…

  3. Getting 3 division teams to the division round is almost unptecedented, but the turnaround in the NFC East from 2020 to 2022 isn’t quite as amazing as it first seems when you realize that for the eight divisions, about one division winner every year finished last the year before (and about one division winner every year finishes in last place the next year). Half the teams in the playoffs one year don’t make it the next year. The NFC South and AFC South both were very weak this year but it wouldn’t be surprising if the first place teams in those divisions is 13-4 in 2024 and it wouldn’t be surprising if the 2024 first place teams in the AFC East, NFC East, or AFC West is 10-7 or 9-8. Most people don’t stop to consider how much NFL teams go up and down from season to season.

  4. 3 NFC East teams with one being the Cowboys means Goodell gets to present record ratings and revenues to the owners.

  5. 8-9 teams especially those with little weakling arm QB’s who cheat don’t belong in the playoffs.

  6. There appears to be a deafening silence on something. What did the prognosticators say about the division when the season started?

  7. What did the prognosticators say about the division when the season started?

It was not for 3 teams in the playoffs for sure, Most I remember were
    1. Cowboys
    2. Ealges (wild Card)
    3. Commanders
    4. Gmem

  8. Two of the teams played very weak competition. They will get reality checks. Hopefully in the Philthy/Nightmara game both fake QB’s will suffer leg injuries so we can remove the stench of their positional fraud.
