Jerry Jones is leery of potential “shakiness” at kicker

USA TODAY Sports

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy insists that the team plans to “forge ahead” with kicker Brett Maher. McCarthy’s boss may have other plans in mind.

Via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com, Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan that the team would “take a look” at the kicking situation, and that the Cowboys possibly would go for two more often after touchdowns.

“It would be really a big setback to go into the rest of this tournament, rest of this playoff, with shakiness at kicker,” Jones said.

So how will the Cowboys eliminate the shakiness? They can’t pretend it didn’t happen, that Maher didn’t miss four extra points on Monday night. And they can’t ignore the chants and taunts that 49ers fans, sensing blood in the water, will direct at Maher on Sunday.

All week long, Maher should be kicking and kicking and kicking with deafening sound surrounding him. Heck, have him wear headphones with the volume turned all the way up containing nothing but his last name being chanted, over and over and over again.

So they have their work cut out for them. Maher eventually has to be trusted to make kicks. How can they trust him to make kicks until he can trust himself?

It really would be something if the team’s latest shot at qualifying for the NFC Championship for the first time since 1995 ends up imploding because the kicker developed an obvious case of the yips — and because the team failed to do enough to fix it.

  1. c’mon jerrah – it’s no big deal. it’s not like the kicking game has ever cost you a playoff game before…

  2. It won’t matter cause they’ll lose by alot more than a field goal anyway.

    Niners 42 – 17

  3. The Cowboys excuses are starting early?!

Their kicker won’t even matter. Protecting Dak should be the only concern against the best defense in the NFL.

  4. Everyone has a bad day at work. One game isn’t indicative of Maher as a whole. He’ll practice like crazy this week and put it behind him. He will have a good game against the 49’ers. He will be able to make the game against the Bucs a distant memory.

  5. The reason they increased the extra point distance was to make it more of a judgment call on whether to go for two. If your kicker isn’t automatic then going for two makes more sense. I wonder if teams don’t go for two because they don’t want to reveal all their best goal line plays. It would be interesting to change the 2 pt play to something else, like 7 on 7.

  6. I can’t wait to see the look on Jerry’s face when they miss a FG or XP that cost them the game.

    hahahahahahahahahahaha!

  7. You can simulate crowd noise in practice but you cannot simulate the pressure of kicking in the playoffs. The Cowboys should absolutely bring in other kickers for try-outs.

  8. Here’s an option: google says “Although they are rarely employed in the modern game, drop kicks are technically still allowed to be used for punts, kickoffs, and extra point attempts.”
Buy him a couple beers, if he’s still shain’, deploy the drop kick. see, problem solved, your welcome.

  9. why do they even have extra points in football? Originally, rugby was 0 points for the TD, and one point for the extra point (try). So basically the entire process of moving the ball down the field & scoring a TD was only to get the chance to kick the extra point for 1 point. American gridiron football evolved from Rugby & began with the same scoring system. Scoring a TD only gave you the chance to kick the ball thru the uprights to score a point. Then they began awarding points for the TD and points for the kick. The amount of points kept changing in both sports over a few decades until end of the 1800s when it evolved to what we have now 6 points for the TD & 1 extra point. In rugby it’s 5 + 2. That’s why in Rugby it’s called a ‘try’ – thanks for attending today’s lecture kids

  11. Typical Jerry, put even more pressure on his kicker than any opposing crowd ever could.

  12. Jerr, talking out loud about a kicker with the yips is possibly the worst thing you can do. But..thats Jerry.

  13. If you are leery, make a change. You run the team and undermine the HC all the time.

  14. This should be a good game actually. Both teams looked pretty good last week but they played inferior teams of course. Looking forward to all of these on the weekend!

  15. Maher will be fine. There is a real story behind this if you’re curious. Haters will see it as more excuses but it’s factual. This is nothing. However, please chirp away as your efforts continue to solidify the Cowboys as the most talked about and popular team in the universe.

  16. Jerruh Jones has been shaky from the outset regardless of the situation with his left footed kicker.

  17. I hear about “pressure”. Is there really that much “pressure” for a professional to kick an extra point?

  18. I’m sorry folks,… but I have to agree with Jerry Jones. If the Niners Cowboys playoff game comes down to a kick being the difference of the Cowboys losing,.. there will be hell to pay for. But,… isn’t Jerry the boss ? He and Steven are the GM’s. If he wants Maher gone,.. he should cut him. That’s the GM’s job.

  20. Cant wait till late Sunday night when I can report marked safe from hearing “How Bout Them Cowboys”.

  21. Maher can practice kicking on an empty field all day, every day, and it won’t mean squat when it’s game time and the pressure is on.

  22. SF 49ERS 34, Dallas Cowboys 33. Maher has the kicker yips. Cowboys lose by a missed XP.

  23. “ No. No. We won’t [look at kickers this week],” “He’s done enough good ones. I don’t think he’s blown the socket or whatever you do.” Jerry Jones on Monday.

“ “It would be really a big setback to go into the rest of this tournament, rest of this playoff, with shakiness at kicker,” Jerry Jones on Tuesday.

Looks like Jerry has his own case of the yips.

  24. Is the big money on the under or the over? WWE/NFL place your bets LET”S RUMBLE.

  25. keep him. he had one bad day. ask vikings fans what it feels like to have a real bad day.

  26. What a bunch of nonsense. It would be incredibly stupid to replace your kicker at this stage of the season. Maher had a bad night and didn’t cost them anything. He was great all year, so why throw that all out the window? Give the guy a break. The Cowboys should be saying nothing but supportive things.

Kicking is like a golf swing, and there’s a large mental component. I’m sure Maher is fine, but if all he hears from the owner is that he’s now considered “shaky”, that’s just adding pressure that doesn’t need to be there.
