Monti Ossenfort: The first order of business is getting Kyler Murray healthy

USA TODAY Sports

One of the difficulties of Monti Ossenfort’s first season as the Cardinals’ General Manager is that the club likely won’t have quarterback Kyler Murray on the field for a significant portion of it.

After tearing his ACL against the Patriots in December, Murray will be on the mend indefinitely. In his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Ossenfort said the Cardinals need to support Murray in getting healthy before anything else.

“We want to see him out on the field,” Ossenfort said. “Again, I’ll go back to that game two years ago at Nissan [Stadium, against the Titans]; I’ve seen what a healthy Kyler can do. I did a lot of work on Kyler coming out of Oklahoma. I know that he is extremely talented with both his legs and his arm and yeah that does represent a challenge for us.

“We’ll be ready for it but the first order of business is getting Kyler healthy and helping him in whatever manner that is possible.”

To that end, with a head coach vacancy, Ossenfort said it won’t be a priority to find the right person specifically for Murray.

“We’re looking for a head coach that can lead this entire organization. We’re looking for a head coach that can develop all the players with Kyler being a big part of that,” Ossenfort said. “We want the right coach. Whether that’s an offensive coach or a defensive coach, it frankly doesn’t matter. We want the best coach and we have a plan for what we are going to be as an organization; we’re going to develop our players and we’re going to put them in the best position to make us successful and ultimately win.”

Former Dolphins head coach and current Steelers assistant Brian Flores has emerged as a potential favorite to be the next Cardinals coach. But the club has also recently met with former Colts coach Frank Reich and also put out an interview request for Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

  1. Hire Brian Flores? That about the stupidest thing he could do. Sure hire a guy who is suing the NFL and who flat out lied about his interview with Denver. That guy toast for good. Kylier Murray is a coach killer and a team killer. In about 3 years Murray, Ossenfort and whoever this coach is will all be gone.

  2. Steve Keim left him quite a hole to dig out of. Drafting quarterbacks with their 1st pick 2 years in a row and then giving a crazy big contract to Kyler Murray.

  3. The first priority is Ossenfort preparing for their draft better than he did with the Titans. If you look at the Titans last four #1 picks, only Simmons was a stud. Burks was disappointing, while Fairley and Wilson! have been busts.
Even Evans and Davis going back were disappointing and Willis had a bad rookie season as well. Bad coaching, bad player performance or bad draft evaluations?

  4. So you can wisely trade him after hopefully seeing him have a decent season enough to trade him.

  5. Murray will be fine and as competitive as he is will be back by WK1. Goodwin to repair ACL/MCL had surgery Jan 3rd 2022 back WK1. RG3, Palmer n Burrow tore several ligaments possible career enders , all Jan surgery back WK1. Watson 2nd ACL back WK1. Peterson ACL/Meniscus back wk1. I could go on and on with examples. Murray had a clean ACL tear and the team has said he’s on track to be back mid way through camp yet the media keeps pushing this narrative.

AZ needs to get healthy around the QB and fix their OL and Murray will be back this next season playing at an elite level again. No QB is doing any better with the garbage that was around KM last year with injuries to his entire OL/WR/RB/TE rooms, they had 2 actual starters on the field the game he got hurt in on a non contact play. Murray’s been a top 10 QB since he was drafted with the least creative HC/OC designing the offense that was 100% reliant on Murray’s arm and him carrying it, and he still thrived as a young QB. He’s special with a legit nfl offense around him he will be back to playing at an mvp level once again.

  6. When successful guaranteed 1st ballot HOFers like Brady, Payton, Rogers…spent hours studying the art and craft of quarterbacking and your often injured, highly paid QB with a guaranteed contract won’t,you’ve got your job cut out for you. The question is can you hire a HC who can get through his adolescent arrogance. As much a job for a psychologist/psychiatrist as for a football coach.

Not really, AZ was bad because they were the most injured team in the NFL not a lack of talent. Like Murray or not healthy with a solid OL he’s a top QB I’m this league, their is a lot of young talent on the roster on both sides of the ball . AZ needs a few more defensive players and they need to fix their OL, draft a young RB to play behind Connor. Arizona has plenty of resources to fill their needs in draft picks in cap space with 5 picks in the top 105 as is including two 3rds. AZ can also trade Hopkins for another high pick n trade PB LT DJ Humphries for a 2nd round pick n go forward with Josh Jones at LT who’s better younger n cheaper. Trading those two players would add an additional $49M in cap space on top of the $35M they have as is with a few older guys retiring. And AZ could possibly trade out of 3rd overall and add even more picks.
The new GM has plenty of resources available, Keim wasn’t great but he leave the cap and draft picks in really good condition compared to teams like the Broncos, at least there is plenty of resources to build with.

  8. Wrong, you build around the QB, not make the QB the sole center of everything. Murray already has am ego the size of Arizona, no one wants Murray’s ego crossing their border.
Draft complimentary players around Murray, build a stout defense, then if Murray still sucks then you should draft his replacement.
I expect this to happen by 2024.

  9. When he comes back, will he be taller? will he play better in big games?
    will he study film?

  10. The titans game he is referring to occurred week 1. Yes, we know what he can do during the first half of the season. The problem is he has had injuries in 3 straight years that affected the outcome of the cards season.

  11. I just know he needs to get Hopkins to the Pats for a 3rd & 6th round picks…. We’ll throw in Hunter Henry after eating 1/2 his cap hit too….

Until his injury this year Murray had missed 3 games in his first 60 or so starts. He started 16 games in 2019, 16 in 2020, 14 in 2021 due to a hamstring issue and then 11 this year tearing his ACL on a field that is notorious for non contact acl tears because of how bad that sod is guys feet get stuck when they plant.
That’s not injury prone. SEVERAL Big name QBs missed a lot more times. Murray’s rookie year he was OROY Pro Bowl alternate year 2 made the Pro Bowl playing at an MVP level for long stretches, AZ makes the playoffs if their kicker doesn’t cost them 3 games missing 3 game winning FGs. Year 3 Pro Bowl played at an MVP level leading the race almost the entire season playing at a top 5 level getting better each of his first 3 seasons. This year the roster literally fell apart as AZ was the most unluckiest team in the NFL. Murray ranks among the top 10 in QBs in several stats since he was drafted and that’s despite having Kliff Kingsbury as his OC/HC that 100% relied on Murray carrying the team with his arm every single week. Oh and Murray n McCoy spend 40+ hours a week together studying game tape in the QB room but you’re to bust parroting narratives to actually research facts that are publicly available.
Any NFL HC worth his salt could half a top offense around Kyler Murray did, Kingsbury did and he was a failed college coach. Murray is an elite QB talent who will be one of the top QBs in the league for a long time to come.

Murray has NEVER been ‘elite’. Never. That narrative is a media driven pile of crap
    ———————————————————————
Yea his stats since he was drafted literally say otherwise ranking in the top 10 since 2019 in multiple passing stats ranking as one of the best QBs n NFL History through his first 3YRs. In 2021 KM ranked top 5 across the board in almost every passing stat.. In 2021 KM posted the 3rd highest PFF passing grade among all QBs last year posting an elite 88.1 overall passing grade via PFF,elite 99.3 #1 ranked grade deep passing grade via PFF. PFFs 7thth overall ranked QB w/ an elite 84.5 grade. Murray also ranked 2nd in overall CMP percentage, 2nd overall in CPOE, top 5 in passing efficiency when blitzed, top 10 in efficiency when he wasn’t blitzed, top 5 clean pocket passer rating, top 10 n DVOA, top 10 DYAR/YAR among QBs, ranked top 3 deep ball accuracy all 3yrs was 2nd last year, 4th in YD/AVG per attempt @7.9 YDs 8.5YDs adjusted, top 3 in big time throws, 7th w/ a 100.6 passer rating, 7th ranked QBR via ESPN!!! Murray ranked between 2nd-7th ALL LAST YR in the QB Index finishing last season ranked 7th.
Maybe next time get your facts straight.

  14. Too many people confuse fantasy stats with actual football. Murray has amazing stats overall…except that he isn’t particularly clutch and tends to fade as the season goes on and the stakes get higher.

Some players have more God-given ability than others…but lesser athletes can have the intangibles that elevate them and the players around them. I love both, but for my money, give me a winner over a stat guy any day.

If Murray is more than a Fantasy performer, he’ll need to start showing it.

  15. Make Kyler read the playbook so he can stop running around like a high school QB and execute on plays.

  16. “The first order of business os to get rid of Kyler Murray” – Fixed it for ya

  17. This guy doesn’t get it and Kyler is going to constantly be in flux if they hire a defensive HC and see any kind of offensive success.
