The Chargers’ coaching staff changes are not limited to the offensive side of the ball.

Daniel Popper of TheAthletic.com reports that the Chargers have fired linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite. They also fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Shane Day on Tuesday.

Wilhoite spent the last two seasons with the Chargers. He also spent two seasons with the Saints after wrapping up a playing career that saw him appear in 79 games for the 49ers and Seahawks between 2012 and 2017.

There’s been no word from the Chargers about head coach Brandon Staley, but the other moves seem to indicate he’ll return for a third season despite last Saturday’s collapse against the Jaguars.

  1. last year they were just out of the playoffs, this year out after the first round… not the biggest steps forward, but it is forward.

  2. Next it’ll be the equipment manager and the kid that runs out to get the kicking tee. Everybody not named Brandon Staley.

  3. Looking up the definition of scapegoat right now. Apparently it means everyone except Staley on the Chargers staff.

The equivalent of firing the tuba players while keeping the dude that steered the ship into an iceberg. That sounds about right.

I do wonder if the Chargers are firing coaches one at a time just to see if what little fan base they have and the media pipes down after a few firings, relieving the pressure on them so they wouldn’t have to fire the HC.

There have been plenty of members of the media calling Charger ownership cheap, understandabley so. Many in the fanbase have called them cheap also.

They should have hired Daboll when they had the chance.

  5. I was surprised they fired the OC, when the defense are who lost the playoff game.

  6. The Defense lost that game in the end however you cannot lose after a 27 point lead in the second half by only scoring one field goal – that’s on the Head Coach!
