Zac Taylor: There’s an edge to this team where we’re not an underdog to anybody

The Bengals are heading to Western New York to take on the Bills on Sunday and the oddsmakers aren’t exactly believing in last year’s conference champion.

Buffalo is a five-point favorite over Cincinnati for the divisional-round matchup. That’s pretty much par for the course, as even though the Bengals won the AFC in 2021, they weren’t widely thought of as a team that could make it back to the Super Bowl for a second consecutive year.

Head coach Zac Taylor was asked about that perception during his Wednesday press conference.

“We know that we’re the defending AFC Champions. So, there’s an edge to this team where we’re not an underdog to anybody,” Taylor said. “And so, I think that’s just been the feeling we’ve had all season.

“We don’t really care what anybody else says about us. We know we belong in the field with every team in this league.”

The Bengals haven’t lost since falling to the Browns on Halloween, winning nine straight games. Of course, their Week 17 matchup with Buffalo was canceled. But that does set up for a unique preparation process, as Cincinnati just got ready to play the Bills a few weeks ago and didn’t end up using a lot of the game plan.

“We just did this with Baltimore, playing them back-to-back weeks,” Taylor said. “It is a little bit unusual the way that the season has unfolded for us in the last four weeks in terms of playing two opponents over the last 28 days. Our guys have handled it well. … They understand the process we follow each week and they’ve done a good job handling it all.”

  1. Team looked great on the two drives against Buffalo but since then has not been the same. Could be the hamlin situation, the coin flip stuff, the 3 key losses on the offensive line or playing a division rival. Distractions aside they will have to be very focused this week if they want to move on.

  2. The Bengals are the road team and the spread is down to 4.5 now. That basically means the Bills would be 1.5 point favorites on a neutral field and 1.5 point underdogs in Cinci. Sounds right to me.

  3. for a team that “doesn’t really care what anybody says about us” they have certainly had thin skin all season for betting odds, etc.

just play the game guys. good luck.

  4. The Bills struggled to beat the Dolphins JV team, Bengals will win by at least 10 points.
Slight difference facing Joe Burrow instead of Skylar Thompson.

  5. Which team shows up? The one that had Buffalo’s number for two series or the Bungles?

  6. Long suffering Bills fan here who is petrified of watching Josh Allen continue to do reckless things with the football.
Frankly I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Allen outplays Burrough.

Whereas the Bengals destroyed the Ravens superstar starting QB, Tyler Huntley.

  8. I sincerely hope the winner of this game ends up winning the Super Bowl. I’m a Bengals fan, but absolutely love the Bills and Bills Mafia. Y’all are my second.

  9. This year’s Buffalo squad reminds me a lot of some of Marv Lewis’s better Bengal playoff teams… good enough to get there..not good enough to finish.
    Prove me wrong Bills.

  10. The offense has not looked the same because they played a $90MM top defense in the Ravens 2 games in a row.

  11. They shouldn’t be underdogs to anybody. It’s a QB league and they have the best QB in the league.

  12. 2 of the top 5 teams in the league so this should be a great game. Cinci had had a few injury problems recently while Buffalo hasn’t had had their “A” game for several weeks, some of that injury related as well. I don’t care who else is on the field, Allen vs Burrow will be great football.

  13. As beat up as the Bengals Oline is, with backups in a right guard, right tackle, and a Jackson Carman starting at left tackle, my initial thought was the Bengals season is over. But something tells me it may not matter Bengals wil find a way to get it done

  14. The media is crowning everyone but Philly & Cinnci everyone is literally doubting both teams so he can shade it but it’s still there floating around the mediaverse

  15. The Bengals better be prepared to play the referees as well. Because the Bills are the team the league has designed to be in the Super Bowl for the AFC. The 49ers in the NFC. The fix is in.

  16. Bungles are ringless. Loser organization. Losers mentality. No one fears the bungles.

  17. Words don’t matter anymore. It’s put up or shut up time. Go Bills!!

  18. Bengals don’t know how to play a big game without getting their blood up over something.

  19. I see Bungle fans are already playing the Ref card. Shows that they are scared and are ready to make excuses if the lose. It’s either they win and everything is all good or if the lose it’s everyone else’s fault. Sad sad sad.

  20. Game should be in Cincy. Bengals looked like they were going to win that one, let’s be honest. Burrow was flawless and the Bengals D held Allen in the RZ.

  21. Whoever wins this game is going to be beat up more than the winner of the Chiefs/Jags game. Neither the Bills or the Bengals looked like a Superbowl caliber team last week. Gonna be a good AFC championship game in KC again…..

  22. yeah…6 inches closer on that hail mary and the Ravens win and the Bungles are sitting at home on ‘their edge’

Really? Going there? Bengals struggled mightily against the Raven’s backup QB. If not for a 98 yard turnover/td, they would’ve been sitting at home this week.

  24. To me this is an even game. Either team can win and win big. Good luck to both teams, but I am praying my Bills come out on top, but if they don’t I am an instant Cincy Fan..

Why was this game not a coin toss situation for location?

    —————-

Because the Bills were 13-3 and the Bengals were 12-4. How can one fan base be so whiny?
