Aaron Donald: I’m playing, never said I wasn’t

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald says he’s not retiring.

Donald caused a stir by changing his Twitter bio to say that he’s a “former” NFL defensive lineman, then he changed it back to “NFL D Lineman for the Rams.” On Twitter Wednesday, Donald indicated that he will continue to play.

Responding to a tweet that played a podcast clip of Donald’s former teammate Chris Long saying that Donald will play this season, Donald indicated that Long is correct.

“Tell em C Lo [Chris Long] yeah I’m playn never said I wasn’t,” Donald wrote.

But while it’s true Donald never said he wasn’t playing, changing his Twitter bio to call himself a “former” NFL defensive lineman certainly hinted that he was done playing. And there’s a long history of players using their social media accounts to give vague hints that they’re considering retiring, or asking for a trade, or a new contract.

And in the same podcast clip Donald was agreeing with, Long said that Donald probably wouldn’t want to be part of a rebuild and might prefer the Rams to trade him to a team that is better positioned to contend in 2023. Long even named the Steelers and Eagles as two teams that Donald, a Pittsburgh native, would want to play for.

So while Donald says he’s playing, he hasn’t said he’s playing for the Rams. Which means his status remains worth watching.

  1. Why does every story I see about Aaron Donald make me like him less and less. You caused this drama dude.

  2. He trolled the media. He knows they dont verify or check, and that there are those that try to read things into every little nuance and run with the story of what he never actually said. He kniws that urgency to be the first to report something has destroyed accuracy of reporting these days. So he made a nuance and the media over reacted like he knew they would. Now he is amusing himself by pointing out that he never actually said anything, they did all that on their own.

  3. Wow. If He went to Pitt, then Pickett would only need to put up 10 points a game with that insane defense.

  4. Check out that contract… he jas $18.5million reasons to stay active until the 3rd day of the 2023 league year.

  5. We all like social media…

    But…

    Without question… since it’s inception…

The World’s IQ has dropped 50%

  6. I’m sure that the Eagles would love to have Donald but I don’t know if they would be willing to pay the price that the Rams would want for him.

  7. He’s always been one to play childish games. Like the time they got lit up by Deebo Samuel and then after the games he pretends not to know who Deebo is.

  8. On the back side of his career. Trade him to whatever team…will overpay. Some desperate GM will do it.

  9. Aaron “Diva” Donald. He is so ridiculously overrated it is ridiculous. He made All-Pro because of his name and the media talking heads never leave their echo chamber.

  10. …but you did say you weren’t playing? Just because you delete something doesn’t mean we didn’t hear the tree fall in the woods. It happened.

  11. Well I didn’t even know he actually played this season.
He and that Rams defense was pretty MIA all season.
I think the Rams may have a surprise for Mr. Donald.

Donald changed his Twitter profile to read “ former NFL player.” I guess that means he’s just enjoying his off season.Right? It’s more like a grab for attention.

  13. Look for the “Rams are in rebuild” narrative (that is only said here) to die on the vine when the Rams qualify for 2023 postseason and it becomes time to credit them for so quickly navigating said so-called “rebuild.”

I actually believe him on that one. Because during that game it did appear like he and 10 other guys were not aware of Deebo’s presence on the field.

You are just as correct as I am. Both things are true.

  16. I noticed that Donald, Bud Dupree and O lineman Lewan all mention Pittsburgh for places they would like to play. Not that the Steelers are interested but many want to play there. Says something about the direction of the Steelers.

  17. Aaron Donald and Sean McVay will be back with the Rams in 2023. There’s one sports writer who tries to generate controversy by saying they won’t. Also – Aaron Donald is still one of the best defensive players in football. People who say he isn’t are still upset that the Rams are they reigning Super Bowl Champions (for another few weeks).

The Rams will have plenty of draft capital this year. When veterans have outplayed their rooking contract and leave, their former team gets compensatory picks. The big question if free agency, who stays and who goes. I’d like to see us keep Jalen Ramsey. Signing OBJ still isn’t out of the question. The big thing we need is the same need a lot of teams have – offensive line help.

The problem is that the Steelers seem to have become one of those teams where we hear how good their direction is for years on end without ever seeing that direction leading to something. Dallas and Miami are right there with you and the Patriots might be applying for membership soon too.
