Ran Carthon: My job is to execute Mike Vrabel’s vision

USA Today Sports

Ran Carthon was officially introduced as the new Titans General Manager at a Friday press conference in Nashville and the main focus of his comments was on the relationship he hopes to build with head coach Mike Vrabel.

Vrabel said that “my No.1 priority is spending more time with Mike Vrabel and learning the systems that are here in place” because he views his job as executing “Mike and his coaching staff’s vision” of building a team rather than trying to simply bring in talent without considering how all the pieces fit together.

“I can be the greatest talent evaluator of all time, but if I can’t bring Mike the players that he needs to fit his system, then it is not going to work. . . . We are not here to collect talent. We are here to build a team,” Carthon said, via the team’s website.

Carthon worked for the 49ers before taking the job with the Titans and they’ve done an excellent job in stocking the roster with players who fit what Kyle Shanahan wants to do on Sundays. Accomplishing the same in Tennessee would be a good way to start pushing the Titans back toward the postseason.

  1. Wow.

Vrabel swiftly on that hot seat. Bad move to allow the coach to be the GM while hiring another GM.

    Kinda like Pats did.

  3. I understand the sentiment but I don’t like it. A great coach can adjust his style of play to fit the attributes of a player. The 49ers have top end talent who could play anywhere regardless of style.

You obviously dont understand the sentiment(or the game in general). You go on to list the 49ers top end talent, 1st off it’s not about “top end talent” who could play anywhere, it’s about ALL the other players on the team with deficiencies that coaches build systems to maximize their ability. Yes some players are so good they can play in any system, the majority if nfl players however DONT fit that category.

  5. “I can be the greatest talent evaluator of all time, but if I can’t bring Mike the players that he needs to fit his system, then it is not going to work.”

Bad quote. He should be getting the best players available, and it should be the head coach’s job to adapt his “system” to fit the strengths of his players. A coach’s job is to put his players in the best position to succeed, not to mold them into some preconceived notion.

  6. Vrabel did not want to trade Brown. They did and he torched them. Amy gave decision making power to Vrabel. Not my team, but Nashville is great city. Hope they both do well.

  7. He’s actually saying the right things. To say he’s not there to collect talent has to be taken in the right context. Building a good team involves bringing in talent…obviously. Building a team is a collection of talent that fits what they’re trying to do as a team. They can bring in talent, but if that talent doesn’t fit what they’re doing it’s wasting that talent and a roster spot. Plus I like how he’s putting himself and his coach in the same boat, as it were. He’s not up there telling the world how great he’s going to be, he’s talking about a colaberation with his coach. When the coach and GM work together in the best sense, it often leads to more success than failure.

  8. Vrabel punking Belichick to the point of his head exploding is a wonderful NFL memory, one I’m quite fond of.

What? BB has been GM since 2000. My goodness, why do people think thet make witty comments, and don’t know how dumb they sound not making sense?

  10. Yes, bb has been a terrible GM for decades. That’s why they’ve been terrible from the second Brady ditched that cheating parasite belicheat. Exactly like I said. Exactly like you and all the other fat ungrateful crybabies were told and couldn’t handle. It will be this way for decades. Irrelevant joke team.
