Chiefs advance to fifth straight AFC Championship Game with win over Jaguars

Death, taxes and the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

Kansas City beat Jacksonville 27-20 today in the divisional round, advancing to the AFC Championship for the fifth consecutive season.

It was an impressive performance by the Chiefs especially because Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter. He was replaced by Chad Henne in the second quarter and then returned in the second half. Mahomes played fairly well down the stretch, but was obviously hobbling, and his status for the AFC Championship Game will be one of the biggest stories in the NFL in the week ahead.

Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne did an impressive job running the offense while Mahomes was out, leading a 98-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass from Henne to Travis Kelce. But the Chiefs badly want Mahomes to be ready to go next week.

For the Jaguars, it brings to an end a season in which they had one of the most impressive turnarounds in NFL history: Last year they had the worst record in the NFL, and this year they made it to the divisional round of the playoffs.

But that turnaround ended today with two costly fourth quarter turnovers, a Jamal Agnew fumble deep in Chiefs territory, and a Trevor Lawrence interception to Jaylen Watson that ended the Jaguars’ last, best chance of a comeback.

Now Kansas City’s attention turns to Sunday’s Bengals-Bills game. If the Bengals win, the AFC Championship Game will be in Kansas City. If the Bills win, the game will be on a neutral field in Atlanta. Either way, the biggest question is whether or not Mahomes will play, and whether he’ll be at or near 100 percent healthy.

  1. Fumbles:
    Jaguars 1
    Chiefs 0

    Interceptions:
    Jaguars 1
    Chiefs 0

    Sacks:
    Jaguars 0
    Chiefs 2

    Penalties:
    Jaguars 5-40 yards
    Chiefs 3-30 yards

That’s the tale of the tape

Congrats to the Chiefs for a 5th straight AFC championship appearance

  2. Betting moneyline on the Jags when Mahomes throw down his jacket and headed for the locker room was not the smartest move I’ve ever made.

  3. Y’all lost to a one legged mahomes and a 98yard td drive by Chad Henne, keep the crying about the refs to a min. Maybe try throwing the ball more then 5 yards and not get away from the run game that was shredding the chiefs.

  4. Trevor Lawrence is him. Good game and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing this matchup time and time again in the future.

  5. Good game, Trevor was good for first divisional. Great season for Jags.

Butker won’t make headlines, but he most certainly saved TDand was clutch on kicks. Difference in game.

  6. Of course they did. Rodg wasn’t going to have it any other way. That’s ok. Daddy will be there soon Patrick. Right after he ends the Bills season.

  7. Turnover machine Lawrence and another fumble cost the Jags. Why I no longer watch them. Too predictable.

The refs will get a nice bonus for helping the Cheifs win!!

    —————-

Man, never realized the refs could cause a Jags player to fumble it, untouched, inside the KC 5.

I know all the Alex Jones-types were getting ready to tell us how that fumble was orchestrated so KC would cover, but given the FG at the end I’m sure they’re editing their comments to tell us that THAT was orchestrated so the Chiefs WOULDN’T cover.

At the end of the day, the “league is rigged” crowd will blame any and all outcomes out some mass conspiracy, because they lead sad lives.

  9. I’ve been a Chiefs fan for 50 years, and I know other fans hate it when one team gets a lot of attention, but I waited 50 years for this sort of rare dominance. I’m a spoiled fan and I know it. Bills, Bengals, Jags, Chiefs, Chargers will be in the mix for next decade.

  10. The jags did not deserve to win this game. Horrible effort no running game and never thrwoing it down field maybe 2-3 times and then the receivers dropped it. Congrats to the Chiefs. They were the better team not by much but the good teams always find a way to win.

You’ve been telling us for 3 weeks that “Rodg” (which doesn’t make sense, given the fact his name is Roger, not Rodger) has been orchestrating an Allen/Mahomes rematch. Are you changing your tune? Or are you just commenting different things to cover all your bases so you can say “TOLD YOU SO!” no matter what happens tomorrow?

  12. Lawrence made great strides this year. Now if the fan base can quit blaming their loses on the refs.

  13. Chiefs played better and deserved to win for sure, but some atrocious calls against the Jags and missed against the Chiefs. The roughing call on Jax was bogus, the helmet to helmet against Lawrence wasn’t called. On the play the Jags got called hands to the face (which did happen), JuJu also pushed off something fierce. It didn’t change the outcome, but it sure helped.

  14. Kelce was nuts today. Chiefs weren’t going downfield at all but he was grabbing everything near him in the short passing game. I would have blitzed the hell out of Mahomes and doubled Kelce.

  15. One legged Mahomes > Trevor Lawrence

BTW – quit with the refs stuff… you look like a fool

All true except the Chargers bit

  17. That was not an impressive performance by the Cheifs! They look average and if it wasn’t for the refs they would have lost this! And neutral site for championship games is a must as playing at Arrowhead is the worse such a terrible stadium. For good games need to be played in domes!

  18. The Jags had chances. They will be back. Lawrence is learning. It’s his second year (really his first because … Urban) and they leaned on him hard. Henne was money (unlike when he was at TSUN losing to the Buckeyes every year back in the … was it the 90s? Seems like it was). The Chiefs D stepped up in a few key spots but they give up too many plays. Rehab that ankle, Patrick!

  19. Just a quick bit of logic for all you NFL is rigged morons. If it was rigged the cowboys would be in the superbowl at least every other year. Please stop. You all just sound ridiculous

  20. I know if 32 teams were starting today all 32 would pick Mahomes number one. Who would be number two?

  21. Man, never realized the refs could cause a Jags player to fumble it, untouched, inside the KC 5.

Need to look at the first half when the Cheifs Oline holds on each snap then there is Chris Jones roughing the pass no calls! The fumble and interception happen as a cause to the refs ignoring Cheifs infringement! The refs are the only reason the Cheifs beat the Broncos twice!!

  22. Jags had no business even being in the game, they are not a playoff team. Chiefs are going to be schooled by either the Bills or Bengals.

  23. I don’t care what game it is, the refs are terrible and dilute the quality of the game, plain and simple.

  24. Did Doug pederson forget he had Trevor Lawrence at QB? Half the play calls were screen passes that went nowhere. Very unaggressive, wet blanket offense that seemed designed for Nick foles.

  25. As a Broncos fan, I’m not surprised to see KC go the AFC Championship Game yet again. What is surprising, given the talent on this team, is that that they’ve been to the Super Bowl only twice and won it once.

Where are you and Giselle watching the games….oh wait…

  27. As a Broncos fan, I’m not surprised to see KC go the AFC Championship Game yet again. What is surprising, given the talent on this team, is that that they’ve been to the Super Bowl only twice and won it once.

How did toys in Denver make about twenty Super Bowls with Sonnie Osmand at Qb and only have two because of a running back?

All I know is Denver won’t be sniffing the playoffs let alone a SB while Pat is at QB.

  28. All I know is Denver won’t be sniffing a Super Bowl while Mahomes is in the division. And that Donnie Osmand looking GM and his mouthful of 2x4s is still looking for a franchise QB.

  29. Jags hung tough but I never had the feeling they were going to win. KC is the better team and it’s not close.

  30. Cowboys fan here. Respect to the Jags, who beat us. They’re a team with an exciting future. The Pederson-Lawrence combo will probably be around a while. But there’s no better QB in the post-Brady-Manning era than Mahomes. I haven’t enjoyed watching a young QB since Elway and Vick, where I keep saying, “I’ve never seen that before.” He was a stud today. Obviously injured and kept playing. Kudos to him and Reid. They’ve earned 5 straight championship games.

  31. Jags didn’t play loose. Very tight.. too conservative very similar to how teams used to play the patriots in their glory years. Half of the battle to beat you was them making you think too much. The management at the end of the first half drive by pederson was very poor. But give them credit the Jags played close against an experienced and battle tested team.

The fact they didn’t throw the ball more than 5yds for 3 quarters is embarrassing but KC did get good pressure up front. Very concerning for the other teams still alive if the chiefs have a good D and mahomes and co.

  32. Im surprised the bills and bungles are even emotionally stable enough to play their game tomorrow…Bills win that game guaranteed…nfl wants neutral site championships so they need to try it out this year

Bill Belichick says “When Reid gets to 13 Title games in 18 years, wake me up.”

The Patriots went to the AFC Championship game eight straight years.

  34. Pedersons play calling showed a complete lack of trust in Lawrence. The reality is that Lawrence has consistently turned the ball over since Clemson. He has talent and tools but I’m not sure I trust the game on his shoulders in big games yet.

I was being generous before but now I’ll remove the sugar coating for you: for KC to have 1 super bowl with that level of talent, GM and coaching in 5 years is a waste of talent. KC with Mahomes reminds me of Miami with Dan Marino.

  36. Unlike the 2017 Jaguars, these Jaguars will be in the mix for years to come. Bottles caught lightning in a bottle, Lawrence is the real deal.

I believe KC is going to the Bowl, even if next week’s game ends up in Atlanta.

  37. Well, wherever the game is played, hopefully Collinsworth isn’t calling it. His incessant fawning over the Chiefs and Mahomes was enough to gag a maggot.

  38. The refs indeed missed several calls that would have helped the Jaguars, but Jacksonville lost that game all by themselves.
Pederson called way too many pass plays, 41 drop backs, 39 pass attempts and only 217 yards versus 19 carries for 144 yards. And then there were the turnovers, that sealed the game for the Chiefs. Couple that with a defensive strategy that had pass rushers dropping back into coverage despite a hobbled Mahomes and they fully earned this loss.
KC’s defence is still garbage and will be shredded by whomever wins tomorrow. Shootout guaranteed for the AFC championship game.

  39. “The Patriots went to the AFC Championship game eight straight years.”
    _____________

10 seasons without me, 0 AFCC. Also not a single successful assistant ever, anywhere, unlike Reid whose tree includes Pederson and McDermott

  40. I like how some people are pointing their finger at Roger. You people need to wake up and think about it. You have 32 billionaires owning teams….yet you think Roger is calling the shots.🥱

How many years did it take Elway to win 2 superbowls? How many times did Elway choke a SB game away? Elway guided Denver to 5 SBs over a 16 year period, getting ragdolled in the 1st three and the 2nd win was questionable due to Denver cheating the salary cap.

    Thems the facts, Bruce.

Chiefs in 5 consecutive AFC championship games, should’ve been at home, except the NFL decided to rig things this year for all of you fatigued Chiefs haters. Something never accomplished by any other NFL team in the modern SB era. This is Mahomes six year in the league, fifth year as QB1.

    Also facts.

Denver won’t sniff an AFC West title until Mahomes hangs ’em up. May you live on the memories of when Denver was a powerhouse with their own drafted and developed quarterback.

  42. Great season by the Jags and great effort here. You can see the little extra margin in execution over the course of the game – a few mistakes, a few FGs instead of TDs, but they still kept it close until the end.

A few more good pieces in the draft and they could be dominating the division next year. Pederson has turned the team into one that seems to believe it can beat anyone, and Lawrence has finally clicked. An improved OL and fewer turnovers next season and they’ll be right back in the playoffs. Kudos!

  43. @
mikeinwichita You’re comparing ancient history to the present and I’ll concede that Mahomes is better than any QB that Denver ever had. You should be concerned that KC has just one Super Bowl win with Mahomes as QB. Mahomes is 1-1 in the Super Bowl. GAL

  44. They have become the new gold standard in the league. 5 straight AFC championships. They just need to figure out how to close. Eagles, 49ers, or Cowboys will be a very tough matchup if they can get past the winner of Bills/Bengals.

  45. Three plays killed it for Jacksonville: The near-interception of Henne before the half, the dropped pass by Kirk that would have been an easy TD, and the fumble in the redzone. The Jags weren’t outmatched at all, they just made mistakes and the Chiefs didn’t. The way things are looking, I think I want to see KC take on the Eagles in the SB.

  46. Great accomplishment to be sure, but the fact they only won one Super Bowl in that same timeframe does raise eyebrows to an objective observer.

  47. The Jaguars are paper tigers with a QB who is barely average. This team was all pro mirage. In the end, they are a .500 team. Unimpressive.
