Daniel Jones: I’d love to be back, but there’s a business side of it, too

The Giants have some work to do in the coming weeks.

Running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones are scheduled to become free agents in March.

In the locker room after Saturday’s loss to the Eagles, Jones was non-committal about wanting to return to the Giants. A day later, Jones said he would “love” a future with the Giants, but he acknowledges it’s uncertain at this point.

“I’ve really enjoyed being here,” Jones said, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “I have nothing but love and respect for this organization. I’d love to be back. But we’ll see, and there’s a business side of it, too. So I’m very grateful to be here and be a part of it.”

Jones explained that he wasn’t thinking about about his future when asked about it after a loss to the Eagles that still was “very fresh.”

“Right now thinking more about this year and this team, the guys and how grateful I am to be a part of it” Jones said.

The Giants declined the fifth-year option on Jones’ contract, but in Brian Daboll’s first season, Jones had his best season. He threw 15 touchdowns and five interceptions, while running for 708 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Giants could use the transition tag ($30.4 million) or franchise tag ($32.4 million) on Jones when the window opens Feb. 21 if they can’t reach agreement on a new deal.

Jones said he “didn’t think there was much truth” to recent reports that the sides were close to an extension but characterized “conversations” with Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen about his future as “positive.”

He smiled when asked if he was aware of what the top quarterbacks in the league are making.

“I’ve got a good sense,” he said.

The one certainty in Jones’ uncertain future is he will see a big pay increase over the $965,000 base salary and $8.365 million in total salary he saw this season.

  1. He is a mid Tier 2 QB.
Someone will want him, but not at a high price like others have received.

  2. Business side? This guy acts like he’s a wanted man. lol

Sounds like Daboll isn’t sold on him.

  3. Transition Tag Em…….. Let’s see what the “open market” says his value is….. Honestly I’d have to see him continue improving on the “ 2022 Daniel Jones”before a long term contract is offered……

  4. Jones improved massively this season, but nobody is going to offer him a $30M/year contract, in a year with a QB-heavy draft and lots of FA and castoff QBs on the market.

  5. Hey Danny hire Florio as our agent. He’ll be sure to get the leagues newest superstar a HUGE deal.

    ————————-

Now both Jones and Daboll have each said the smartest thing possible given the upcoming talks.

  7. One of the top-5 offensive minds in the league could only coach this guy to 15 TDs in a season. That ranks him 21st in the league in passing TDs. He’s 15th in passing yds. Giants will need to do better if they want to stay relevant.

  8. The “business side” door swings both ways. There will be a lot of FA QB’s available that are better than him. Brady, Garoppolo, Carr, and Mayfield come to mind, in addition to the draft. Get cute with the negotiations and he may end up as a back-up making commensurate money.

  9. If the Giants can tag and trade him for a solid package of picks, then they should consider it. Develop a new young QB under Daboll and while they’re doing that maybe sign…..

    *gulp*

    …….Tom Brady?

  10. This league is full of QBs who have been paid more than they’re worth, Dak, Kyler and Kirk being a few. Kyler is no better than Jones and he got a max deal. Goes to show how hard it is to find “the” guy and the risks teams will take to find one.

DJ is not a superstar and never will be but he led a talentless Giants team to the playoffs and there are at least a few teams that are just a competent QB away.

  11. what free agent QB would be better and know daboll’s system better than Jones?…tag him and let him prove himself by increasing TD’S and yards next year…if he does not… show him the door..

  12. Pure speculation. Barkley’s deal will be announced in coming weeks. They’ll tag Jones, possibly non exclusive tag, then it could get real interesting.

  13. Giants don’t need to overpay for a mediocre QB. Daboll could have got Jones production out of 30 other QBs in the league. And no one should spend big on the RB position….The Eagles spend less than $3.5M on Hurts and Sanders….

Murray is a FAR better far more gifted QB than Daniel Jones is, you’re smoking some strong stuff to make such a ridiculous statement. In Jones BEST season he had 15TDs n 3200YDs posting similar stats to Murray’s as a pro based on the all they’ve injuries they had. A QBs value is based off a lot more than one year, Murray is in the top 10 in several stats since he was drafted. Jones is ummmm not. Jones doesn’t even have a single pro bowl on his resume.

  15. 4 years, $100 million. More than fair to both parties. Simply can’t give this dude $35-40 million/year for 1 solid season with Daboll.

Jones is not close to Kyler Murray. Murray was better every season except this one. However he is way better than 46 year Brady, Jimmy G, Carr (close) and especially Mayfield like some else said. This is a weird place.

  17. This team has so many needs there’s no way the Giants can commit more than $20 million/year to Jones. I hope the Mara’s and the Tisch’s just stay out of Schoen and Daboll’s way and doesn’t force them to keep DJ if they want to go in another direction.

  18. Jones will return to New York as no one else will want him. Barkley will end up in Washington. He will want to play for Rivera and alongside McLaurin, Dotson, and Samuels. That team would win the Super Bowl and Barkley knows it and wants it.

  19. We haven’t seen Jones’ ceiling yet. He had awful coaching before this year on some pretty bad Giants teams. Daboll did a good job with him this year but he still had far too much pressure to see what he can really do. Good thing he can scramble.
I’d take Jones over Murray in a heartbeat. With his ego and suspect work ethic I doubt Murray will ever have a great season. With some protection and good receivers I have no doubt Jones would perform at a high level.
I hope things work out well for him.

I think we are good at the RB position. BRob and Gibson mixing in some Jared Patterson creates a lethal backfield. We are a QB away from competing in the playoffs next season, but you never know how Sam Howell will work out. You can keep Jones….he doesn’t look like a leader on the field. HTTC!

  21. Unfortunately for Jones, the historically dumb teams (Browns, Cardinals, etc) have way over paid for their QBs based largely on hype (what has either Murray or Watson won?) although maybe the dumbest team in the NFL, the Texans, might be interested in over-paying.
Giants aren’t the smartest team in the NFL but they’re not stupid either. My guess is unless they can work out a deal that represents what Jones has been, one good year out of four, they’ll transition tag him and wait and see. Jones had a nice year, but it’s just one year, he needs to prove it again before any serious money (and nowhere near top money…he’s the type of QB that will need other assets on O & D…which cost cap space…with a guy like Mahomes, he overcomes a lot more than Jones will ever overcome) over a longer term is invested.

  22. NFL contracts are all about the signing bonus and the guaranteed money. Don’t let the ridiculously large numbers fool you. I wouldn’t doubt he gets a 5 yr offer for $200 mil or more,… but small signing bonus and maybe $50 mil guaranteed.

  23. People get paid when they are on the open market. Say what you want about DJ – but he played well with a team full of arena league wide receivers and suspect offensive line. Is he a pro bowler? Nope. But how often to QBs hit the open Market?

Say what you want about the Giants offering him 20-25millio – but he would turn that down, and multiple teams would offer him a contract of multiple years at $30+ mil per season.

Think about the following “top qbs” from the last couple of drafts – Josh Rosen, Dwight Haskins, Baker Mayfield, Mitchell Tribisky, Sam Darnold. It is tough to find a true talent in the draft. All of these QBs were top half of the first round, and didnt work out. Someone will pay big bucks if the Giants try and low ball him. And In similar manner, drafting 25 in the first round for the Giants, limits the quality of QB that they could be eligible to draft as well. Is DJ better than the available free agent QBs? Garrapolo? Bridgewater? Darnold? Mayfield? etc

  24. He’s basically a smarter Mitch Trubisky, decent enough to keep you around .500 until your rookie is ready to start. He seems a decent no-waves guy so he can parlay it into a career like Chad Henne or Case Keenum backing up a franchise guy, collecting a few rings and making $4 million a year for taking 30 snaps a season or an emergency start … not a bad gig but not a starter.

If the Niners can find Purdy in the LAST ROUND, draft better. They’re out there for a rookie contract. Just don’t mistake paying Mahommes money for Kyler Murray.

  25. All New York hype. Daboll is the “sure fire!” coach of the year even though they ended 4-7-1. Jones is a good QB now. Spare me. Although as an Eagles fan I do want them to sign him to 5 years $300 million

There best receiver ended up being a waiver wire addition from buffalo! So yeah, I think the top 5 offensive mind did a hell of a job with what he had available! They got to the divisional round with majority of the same roster that had the 5th pick in the draft, while having to shed cap in the process . If that is your definition of “only” then you obviously have no clue what a top 5 offensive mind looks like. Yes the roster needs to improve but now they have cap flexibility to start that.

  27. What business side ? Your coach made you! Daboll should really be coach of the year for getting this team to the playoffs. Daniel Jones should really realize there isn’t another place to succeed… he would most likely be a back up or third stringer

  28. He played well based on the supporting cast around him. Besides a great RB, what else did he have to work with? A questionable o-line? Other teams practice squad receivers? Give him a real team and I think he will do really well in this system.

  29. You cannot win the Super Bowl with a QB whose primary ability is running and is a 2nd rate thrower. Never been done, never will be done.

  30. All of the coach of the year comments are Giants fans. For What Pederson started with and the crap show that team was after Mayer, he should be the coach of the year. No doubt.

  31. I understand that watching every giants game isn’t something that most people here have done. I have, and the guy is a real QB. He has been given nothing each year except for good coaching this year with a stud LT. The rest of the line is crap, and his receivers are all practice squad guys that were all released by other teams. Show me a QB that has done more with less.
