Jerry Jones: Playoff loss changes nothing about Mike McCarthy’s status

For the second straight postseason, the Cowboys lost to the 49ers. For the second straight postseason, the game ended with a questionable offensive decision from coach Mike McCarthy, an expert in offense. But the curious effort to set up a Stanford band-style play that never even got going will not have serious consequences for the man who drew it up.

Asked by reporters after the 19-12 loss whether the outcome changes anything for owner Jerry Jones about McCarthy’s status, Jones said, “No. No. No, not at all.”

Last year’s wild-card loss to the 49ers ended with a quarterback draw that was aimed at giving Dallas a realistic final shot at the end zone. But the execution didn’t account for the fact that the umpire had to get through the quarterback and the center in order to set the ball before it was snapped and spiked, ostensibly to stop the clock with at least one second left.

This year, in lieu of a Hail Mary (which had a very small chance of succeeding given that the play started 76 yards from paydirt), McCarthy had a unique formation aimed at sparking a parade of laterals, with running back Ezekiel Elliott serving as the center and then, presumably, one of the men to get the ball as part of a chain of hot-potato pitches.

But Zeke was blown up and receiver KaVontae Turpin was tackled almost immediately, before even one lateral could be attempted. Thus, no matter how it looked on the whiteboard, it was a disaster on the field.

Beyond the design and execution of the final play, failure of coaching and attention to detail emerged twice on the drive, with tight end Dalton Schultz both failing to get out of bounds properly after making a catch and then getting out of bounds a little too quickly, before he got his second foot down after securing a reception.

Yes, it’s on the player when mistakes like that happen. It’s also on the coaching staff to hammer those details into the brains of the players in order to ensure that, when everything matters most, everything that needs to happen happens like clockwork.

Regardless, based on what Jones said after the game, McCarthy will be back for a fourth season as coach of the Cowboys.

The thing about Jerry Jones is that he will completely, totally, and unconditionally support a player or a coach until the moment he no longer does. And that moment can, in theory, come at any time.

  1. Oh goody say the fans of other team upon hearing Jones endorse McCarthy.
I tell ya – he’s just not a good coach.

  2. I’m not a fan of Mike McCarthy, but to blame him for Dalton Schultz bonehead play on the sidelines is absolutely ridiculous. Every player in the national football he knows that you need to feed and bones in order for it to be attach. That was 100% on the player.

  3. Jerry it’s time to bring the football people in. People who know football personnel and the mechanics of the game. You and your kid don’t know what you are doing. This is longest amount time the Cowboys have been losers. Hire a General Manager and stay out of the football operations. Go back to finding oil wells.

  4. I don’t read this as Jerry saying McCarthy’s job is safe. This is Jerry saying he’ll do whatever he feels like doing whether McCarthy wins or loses.

  5. Its time for the Cowboys to move on from Dak. His decision making under pressure is atrocious. The interceptions he keeps throwing are very concerning.

  6. I doubt there are many on this forum who think McCarthy is a great coach. That being said, to make a big deal about what gadget play he called with a 1% chance of winning seems a bit over the top.

McCarthy and his staff had the team ready. They played physical and held up against the most physical team in the league. The blame should be on Dak. In a tight game, the team that wins the turnover battle usually wins the game. Dak’s 2 picks had far more to do with the Cowboys losing than McCarthy’s coaching.

  7. Jones is such an old news dated blowhard whose team has not made it to the NFC Championship game in 27 years. America”s Team? Maybe some Banana Republic’s team. Glad he is shut up til September

  8. That play looked complicated and I thought they would at least get a few laterals off before ending the game. I was wrong, that play looked like they never practiced it. It looked horrible.

If Quinn leaves for another job this offseason the Cowboys are done. Also, they need Dak to not lead the league in INTs next year.

  9. Purdy threw 0 touchdowns and the 49ers still won. Can we admit now that scheme and coaching does matter? Calling out all the Tom Brady fanboys!

  10. Jerry is loyal to a fault. I don’t even care about the last play, realistically not too many plays have a great chance to succeed from 76 yards out. My beef is why did the Cowboys punt with 2:05 left on the clock? The defense was gassed, they were only lucky that Mitchell ran out of bounds or they never would have gotten the ball back. Better to go for it on 4th down even at their own 15 yard line, and if fortunate enough to get a TD then go for 2 just like Doug Pederson. Between injuries and the offense not generating long drives the defense was spent.
In the end the better team won. San Fran has an impressive run going with 9 wins in a row but I don’t like their chances against Philly. San Fran has some elite players dotted throughout their lineup, Philly has line strength on both sides of the ball. Not sure Purdy will handle the pressure well.

  11. The last play was completely irrelevant. No team, no QB was gonna pull out a 70 yard TD with 6 seconds left. Dallas May as well have tried a bizarre trick play. Only a bizarre trick could possibly have worked.

  12. Jerrah’s problem isn’t that he’s not going to fire McCarthy or that he’s not going to replace Dak. The problem is he thinks they don’t need to be replaced. It may very well also be that he does not care. Jerrah is a business man, not a football guy. If the Cowboys are making money, his team is successful. Championships and Superbowls are irrelevant.

  13. So where’s Dak in the conversation. McCarthy didn’t throw 2 picks. Still what Jerrah says today could easily change in the next few weeks after he’s had time to stew about it..

  14. Jerry Jones: Playoff loss changes nothing about Mike McCarthy’s status because no matter what happens, I’m hiring Sean Payton.

  15. Commanders, Lions , Dolphins and Cowboys?
Name the NFL teams who have longest droughts without a conference championship game appearance.
    America’s team… lol

  16. Jerry it’s time to bring the football people in. People who know football personnel and the mechanics of the game.

    ——-

This is a tired line .. Jerry Jones has been in the league and running the Cowboys for over 30 years. You want him to hire somebody who was in diapers when Jerry was running an NFL team?

  17. Thanks Jerry, we all will see you same time next year same results. We look forward to seeing what the Cowboys come up with when it comes to your annual early exit from the playoffs. See ya next year.

  18. The Cowboys had a great season. They’re one of the top 5 or 6 teams in the league. Most teams were home watching from their couches. The 49ers just have better players than the Cowboys. The 49ers probably have the best roster in the entire league. Look at all those playmakers on San Francisco. This isn’t about the coaches. Heck, Sean Payton did the same thing every year in New Orleans with an earlier exit than what all the experts thought, yet everyone acts like Sean Payton is the second coming. There’s only going to be one winner out of 32 teams. That doesn’t mean the other 31 have to panic and start firing everybody.

  19. Apart from eliminating Dak’s frequent mistakes, it seems like what’s missing with this team is just a bit of edge and focus. There’s enough pure talent here to do as well as any team.

Who can give that extra little bit of edge and focus to a team that’s already a 12-win team in a tough division? And which retired coach is looking for a win-now team with a patient owner with a large wallet? I think you can see where I’m going with this.

  20. Awesome play design. Elliot at center was genious. Loved watching him get blown up. McCarthy and Moore great offensive minds. Prescott is one of the leagues most overrated. Hope now we can stop hearing about Dak and the Cowboys fro all the fools on TV. Because they say so doesn’t make it true. Dallas is year in and year out overrated.

  21. McCarthy should be fired just for punting the ball back with two minutes left in the season.

Yeah, they got the ball back, with very little time and lousy field position.

  22. Packer fan here – but I think it’s unfair to pull all this on McCarthy. I really like Tony Pollard – that really hurt them in this game. The defense was great. I’m not going to comment on Dak or Zeke, but at least they were in the game? I was also a 49er fan growing up as a kid in CA – so I’m happy to see them do well. For the Cowboys – I think they need to draft well at OL and pick up a WR/HB in the mid rounds. They are known for doing that. I think the Cowboys will be fine – just a rough game.

  23. I enjoyed the Cowboys losing, but also was not at all rooting for the 49ers. That being said, I have NO IDEA how anyone can put this on Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys as a TEAM looked LOCKED IN. NO ONE made the 49ers look as bad as the Cowboys did today. If you want to blame anyone, it has to be some of the PLAYERS on offense not executing, and the special teams PLAYERS. I hate singling out players, especially Dak because he gets so much hate, but if people are going to pile on McCarthy when he had his team so ready I have to say Dak was WAY more at fault here than McCarthy. There was NO time management issue. He punted because he trusted the defense when Purdy was playing like trash. The standards for this Super Bowl-winning head coach who just won a playoff game and had a loaded #2 seed reeling are ridiculous.

  24. Either the 49ers aren’t as good as people thought or Dallas is a better team than expected. SF had a two day rest advantage and barely won, had to resort to dirty play to knock out Pollard. Jerry is a meddler who can’t help himself. Any and all of his coaches have had to put up with that, and no really top level coach would stand for it. So, coach Mike is safe. I wonder if Jerry insisted on the Monday night game, more $$$$, more media exposure for the richest franchise in the league at the expense of his players?

  25. I don’t get why people are complaining? I enjoy the cowboys like this it’s great for the NFL drama 🤣.

Please Jerry keep doing the same thing each season 😂

Agree with everything except- for the millionth time, purdy is quite good under pressure. All you need to see is highlights against Miami game. They sent the house after him and he still came through. Dallas brought pressure too and the kid didn’t turn it over (didn’t throw a TD as well but…). All said and done purdy will still grow no matter how this season pans out but this guy is cool under pressure

  27. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry … the big drama is in the straight trade for Lamar Jackson, not firing the feller’ from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania … maybe upgrade on OC to optimize for LJ?

Lamar Jackson for Dak Prescott. It’s all about the drama, Jerry. WWE-grade drama.
    [For All Mankind, s02e09 @43:55]

Mad props to Ronald D. Moore.

  28. Jerry Jones is in a no win situation. He makes money for the Cowboys brand whether the Cowboys win or lose. That’s why he tone deaf regarding others opinions of how the Cowboys operates. He’s the owner and gm both life time positions with no change in policy. Jerry throws money on the assumption that said player will bring a Super Bowl to Bog D so that he can receive all the credit

Jones is dumb enough to not fire the GM as well.

    ————————-

Dumb would have been firing anyone, or even hinting at it, in that press conference. He’s upset he lost sure, but a temper tantrum or lash out in any direction is not going to change that. He does have the offseason coming when every owner should evaluate their team and decide what the best next moves are. He will use that time for a more thoughtful, analytical, and methodical decision process.

  33. It’s easy to take shots at McCarthy but that loss is on Dak, and to a lesser degree Kellen Moore. On Dak, this just wasn’t the game where you could afford to turn the ball over. That’s at least a six point swing.
On Moore, how many times do you have to run it on first down before you realize it’s not working? Coming into the game everyone but him knew it wasn’t going to work. In a game where points were at a premium not using play action early and getting some chunk plays was costly.

  34. The players have to perform. The D line did not contain in the 4th Q, and the QB missed some throws.

  35. Dakotas bad decisions and punting with 205 left is the reason they lost. Terrible offense they didnt get anything going all night. A big shame that Pollard got hurt

  36. I was pulling for the Niners but some of these annoying nerds saying BangBang makes me hope they lose 73-0 next week

  37. Can we please stop the love and ranking Dallas even close to the preseason top ten? Regardless that they “made it” to the divisional game, they still are not a top ten team. Stick them at 17 (at best) and leave them there for eternity.

  38. Even though it didn’t work, I liked the fact that they tried something different on that last play.

  39. LOL

    Perfect Jerrah.

I feel sorry for many of the players who are championship caliber.

But it’s hard with a deficiency at coach and QB.

    =======================

    This is exactly correct.

So may people saying “gosh, Dak didn’t throw it past the marker.” Who cares? It was one down to go 75 yards. It wasn’t going to happen.

If you want to complain, complain about the 2 Dak picks that should have been 4. Complain about the long pass down by 7 when he had the guy and instead threw it to the outside.

    Complain about stupid play calling.

    Lots to complain about.

  41. Dak’s INTs and Pollard’s injury contributed far more to the loss than the last play. Cowboys may be making major changes in the next year across the board.

  42. Jerrah looks in the mirror every morning & sees an NFL genius staring back at him…at least in his opinion. The day he fired Jimmy Johnson just to show he could – Dallas has been on a downhill slide.
And before you Jerry Jones disciples start screaming – Barry Switzer won the Super Bowl with Jimmy Johnson’s team…Barry changed nothing – no coaches & no players.

    ============

Not a Brady fan – he’s a cheater after all – but so is Belichick. He’s the most overrated coach in history. Outside his time with Brady, tell us about all the playoff wins his brilliant scheme and coaching have produced.

  44. Jerry always gets the team he wants, but never the results, and he’ll never understand that the two are related.

  45. Whoever is HC next year needs to ditch Kellen Moore. He constantly looks unsure of himself. Always chattering into his headset keeps looking at the play sheet while jabbering away, to Prescott I’m guessing. Just call the damn play and shut up.

  46. The Cowboys are never mentally prepared for big games. Their opponents just need to wait for the Cowboys to make their inevitable mental errors, and soon enough it happens. Schultz fails to get out of bounds on one catch. Later, he forgets that he needs both feet in bounds near the sideline. Last season, Prescott runs down the middle of the field with no time outs and then forgets that the official needs to down the ball before it can be snapped. All unforced mental errors. The players are not engaged. They have life way too easy.

    ______________

Shut up until September?? Have you met Jerry Jones?? Don’t ever underestimate his ability to find a microphone.

  48. This was 100% on Dak. He turned the ball over on critical situations and didn’t execute. Dallas D was outstanding. Dak needs to go.

  49. Absolutely ridiculous logic. If he had gone for the forth down his odds were way better than going for this ridiculous play. No logic should have went for it on fourth down

  50. Sometimes “Offensive Geniuses” get caught up in the scheme of it all. They believe that if they design the perfect play, everything will just somehow magically work. The design is the end-all, be-all of the play. I saw this with Mike McCarthy, I saw it with Mike Martz years ago, and I’m seeing it with Matt LeFleur.

Having said that.. I think sloppy play and boneheaded actions are partially a result of the negotiated reduction in practice time. Especially for these coaches that are offensive geniuses, they spend so much time trying to teach theory, that they don’t have enough time for repetition.

  51. Dallas’s problem beside poor coaching that seems not to spend a little if any time on working through the details is they pay to much money to few players leaves. It was obvious they are lacking receivers, they had nothing even close to replace pollard and no depth in the defense that ran out of gas about midway through the third. Not-to-mention Parsons strikes me as the type of guy that is going to expect to be paid $50 million a year. And Dak is just another average NFL QB that cannot win games when they matter and his salary increases by $30 million which means more starters are gone and depth gets worse.

  52. The Cowboys should make Quinn the HC, get rid of most of their Offensive coaches, except Skip Peete and Robert Prince, find a new QB, and develop an offense around Pollard and Lamb.

  53. McCarthy is not a great coach, but Dallas’ problems start with Dak. Just another franchise to dump a boatload of money on someone they cannot win a championship with. In a couple of more years, Buffalo will be saying the same about Allen.

  54. Right….playoff loss doesn’t change McCarthy’s status. He was going to get fired regardless 🙂

  55. Carr,Winston,garropolo,purdy,Lamar,hurts,tua,Lawrence,henne,Wilson(all of them),Jones(all of them),allen,burreaux,tannehill,mahomes,geno,fields,rogers,love,and all the rest i left out>>>>>>>>>dakota…

  56. Watching the play it seems pretty obvious the Dallas coaches expected the LB to ignore Elliot and just go and try and sack the QB. That would have made Elliot the 1st player to receive the lateral with maybe 1 defender in front of him. I think most coaches would take Elliot 1-on-1 against most defenders.

So the play was in fact completely blown up by the LB having good situational awareness not that it was a bad design. (By the way ALL trick plays are a bad design when they don’t work but brilliant when they do….. ask any media guy or fan.)

All that said there isn’t a play in ANYBODY’S playbook that is good for 76 yards on the last play of the game. So what else is a coach to do but try something crazy?

And for all of those who want McCarthy fired or Dak replaced unless your team is the 9ers, Bengals, Chiefs or Eagles YOUR team and QB didn’t do better and probably not as well.

  57. There’s alot of reasons to not like Jerry Jones or to think he’s a buffoon…but anyone who suggests he doesn’t care about winning hasn’t been paying attention. Jerry Jones loves his cowboys and would do anything to have his team win. Each year he spends up to the cap and oes his best to bring on the best free agents.
Jones’s issue is he still hasn’t grasped that he just can’t buy the best teams, like he could before the salary cap. It’s the reason why he always overpays a few stars. If there was no salary cap the cowboys would be like the Yankees. So we can all poke fun at his bad decisions but it’s disingenuous to suggest he doesn’t care about winning, because he obviously does

  58. the defense held McAffery to < 45 yards
the defense held Deebo to < 45 yards
the defense held Purdy to 0 touchdowns
while the offense gave up 2 giveaways

The offensive line held up….this is all on Dak.

  59. The entire NFL wishes you stay the course and retain Mr. Buffet so we can see a repeat performance next year.

  60. Dak Prescott lost that game. Not the rest of the team,…. It was Dak who blew it. He can’t help himself from throwing INT’s at the very worst times.

    —————————————————————
49ers won because they held Dallas to 12 points. Against a better team they’ll need more than 19 to win.

  62. When does Jerruh realize he’s going nowhere with Dak? Trey Lance should be avaliable next year, a lot cheaper😅

  63. It’s “next year is our year” season literally overnight in Dallas with the Jerry Jones clown show!

  64. The playoff loss changes nothing…until it does. This loss is not squarely on Mike McCarthy, although the clock management problems are still there. Lots of knuckle-headed things done by his players also contributed.

  65. Cowboys just need to regroup and reload in preparation for next year’s annual post-season collapse.

  66. The last time the Cowboys won the Divisional round was during Bill Clinton’s first term.

  67. Maybe the loss itself shouldn’t, but the clock mismanagement at the end of the game (again) and that pathetic gimmick final play should.

  68. Cowboy fans might have to wait a few year but Jerry won’t be in charge forever. He will eventually turn over the reigns to Stephen. Once that happens there will be sweeping changes. They will get a new GM and head coach along with a scouting staff and will let them make the decisions. Stephen Jones seems like a low profile guy who won’t do radio interviews and have a weekly show. Maybe I’m wrong. Say what you want about Jerry but he is a brilliant businessman who made a fortune promoting the Cowboys brand and sponsorships. The problem is he thinks he can run the personnel and coaching department.

  69. It’s a good thing throwing interceptions aren’t in Dak’s DNA! Or whatever nonsense Jerruh was sprouting. How many would he have thrown if it was…..LOL.

  70. In these days of NFL parity, the coaches have a bigger impact than ever. Most teams have good/great players, but it takes great coaches to get the most from them.

  71. Hats off to McCarthy for sticking with Maher as kicker. As a coach, I would not have done that. Had Maher missed either of the two FGs, fans would be calling for McCarthy’s head. That decision took guts.

  72. I thought I saw slimglynn going up the gangplank of the Caribbean Princess , he’s left town for the winter.

  73. The loss doesn’t change McCarthy’s status? Does that mean that Jerry planned to fire him and hire Payton all along? In reality, why would he fire the coach. The common thread since Jimmy Johnson left is Jerry Jones.

  74. The Cowboys will never go to the Super Bowl and win one with Dak as their QB. His inaccurate passes and interceptions just destroy any possibility to keep a drive moving forward! He is undisciplined and uses poor judgement. Both his offensive coordinator/QB can’t get him under control with a HC who has worked with prior winning QBs will not break him of his bad habits!
