While X-rays were negative on Patrick Mahomes‘ ankle, the Chiefs quarterback underwent more tests on Sunday.

The results were encouraging for Kansas City.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, an MRI confirmed Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain and that Mahomes did not have any other significant damage.

As Mahomes said on Saturday night, Schefter reiterated that the quarterback plans to play in next week’s AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes was obviously hindered by the ankle injury, but he nevertheless re-entered the game in the second half after missing just 13 plays. The quarterback was 10-of-15 for 111 yards and a touchdown in the last 30 minutes, overall finishing 22-of-30 for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas City has an extra day of rest before playing again next Sunday. But Mahomes’ practice status will be worth monitoring throughout the week.

The Chiefs will play the winner of Bengals-Bills next Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

  1. Absolute warrior.

This is the guy that fans admire not a weakling arm system QB makes Tommy who was suspended for cheating and can’t even get to .500 without elite coaching.

  2. I remember spraining my ankle in high school. That’s not exactly an easy thing to deal with. I couldn’t walk.

  3. Those saying how bad a high ankle sprain is are the same people that we’re disappointed Mahomes season wasn’t finished yesterday during the game.

  4. Good news that there is no structural damage. Those of you thinking or hoping that he won’t play next weekend need to remember that he only missed 2 games after dislocating his kneecap. Dude is tough as nails and he’ll be ready to play.

  5. This is what happens with running QBs. Clearly Reid needs to cut him and maybe kick the tires on a Derek Carr or Baker Mayfield.

  6. What a warrior! Wow, just wow, never heard of a nfl player performing with a high ankle sprain. Wow!!!

  7. I have more respect for Mahomes now given Mac Jones suffered similar injury and had to be carried off the field screaming like a toddler.

  8. High ankle sprains are usually 3-6 week injuries. Could be interesting. Was he in a boot after the game?

Uh oh…Only gets worse as it goes.

I’d easily take Mahomes with one leg over any Patriots QB. And the Pats QBs are well-rested since they couldn’t even make the playoffs. 🤣

  10. Well if this was the regular season he’d be out for 7 weeks but since it’s the playoffs he’ll be starting next week.

  11. Welp. This is what we get to hear about the rest of the playoffs. Can’t wait to hear about how gutsy and tough Mahomes is for the next month. Gonna be totally fresh and never heard before.

  12. I agree that this doesn’t necessarily mean good news. As we’ve seen with other players, these high ankle sprains appear to linger. Not sure if it’s his plant leg or his driving leg and I don’t know how that differs either.

Hopefully he responds well to treatment and can continue to perform to his level. Hate to watch the AFC Championship game with a hobbled Mahomes.

If he doesn’t heal well and isn’t ready to play, we all get cheated, and I’m not a Chief’s fan either.

  13. Good news no other injury. Not good news that his was injured at all and high ankle sprain is not small, but no matter, it affects things going forward. Jags were gashing their defense on the ground. 56% attempts and 52% completions went Kelce’s way including 67% of the TD receptions. If a team can run the ball well and cover KC receivers well especially Kelce plus with the injury, other teams have a good shot. But the Bills or Bengals don’t run the ball enough or consistently enough to take advantage of KC’s defensive weakness, stoping the run. If KC wins next week, then he will be a lot healthier by Super Bowl if he does not reinjure his ankle.

  14. I bet Mahomes figured out a way to play through a tough injury in the playoffs…unlike another high profile qb.

  15. The diva will play this up for the week and then play like normal. NFL wants the Chiefs in the big game so this will be a non-issue.

  16. He’s the only player to not miss time with a high ankle sprain. Sounds like trying to puff the legend of Mahomes up to me.

  17. Mahomes MVP? nah. Henne can take this talented offense 90+ yards for a TD…. in a playoff game. A hopping Mahomes puts up points with these offensive weapons. You take Hurts out and the Eagles get an L vs weak teams. Hurts is the real MVP.

Too much was made over Hill leaving while negating MVS, Juju, Toonie, and ohh yeah… Travis Kelce is still playing TE out there too (lead NFL in TE catches). KC also has an All-Pro center too, so it is not like KC o-line is bad. Andy Reid been to how many championship games? And how many SBs? Great proven head coaching is huge. Mahomes has EVERYTHING you could want as a QB, but no one mentions that.

McNabb played with a broken ankle (on 3rd play of game) and went on to throw 4 TDs.

  19. I’m a fan of Mahomes as a Steeler fan, love to watch the guy play the game of football. I thought he should’ve been pulled when he could barely make it back to the running backs to make a hand off, commend him for not wanting to sit on the bench, but you gotta wonder how much aggravation did he do by finishing the game?

Either way, hope he can make a good recovery this week and is able to play on 100% health next week end

  20. I wouldn’t say that’s good news. Either team he plays next week has a good defense that can pressure him. Winner of todays game goes to the Super Bowl.

  21. This likely cost KC a chance at winning the SB. KC needs Mahome’s at his best considering this is the worst roster Mahome’s has played with in KC.

The doctor is in the house. Lol

  23. Chad Henne easily driving 98 yards pretty much proved Kermit is a system QB.

Andy Reid deserves most of the credit for that offense

  24. They just let a free rusher (jumped offside) have a shot at what could’ve been a huge hit on Burrow. I’ve seen the play blown dead many times before. Trying to take Burrow out refs?

  25. Mahomes is good but he’s injury prone, not like first ballot HOF QB Russell Wilson.

Switch teams and KC would be undefeated and Seahawks would be picking #1.

  26. It’s hard to bet against the guy. It wouldn’t surprise me if he plays next week and plays well.

  27. 1)High ankle sprains take weeks to heal but you can play on less severe ones but running is not not going to be easy. Good thing that Mahomes, unlike Murray or Jackson, is a pretty good pocket passer so he can still play. 2) Pats haters never disappoint. Even on event that that has nothing to do with the Pats, they can’t help but spew out their venom. Get a life!

  28. High ankle sprains can be really bad. Always slow to heal and usually makes for very limited running/movement. Chiefs o-line’s is going to have to keep him clean next week. Any aggravation could make his day a short one.

  29. This report doesn’t tell us anything about the severity. One of the things about Andy Reid and Mahomes that has mesmerized the media and many fans is their flare for the dramatic, whether the trick plays or the fancy arm angles. It’s in their nature. Likewise, Mahomes was filmed SPRINTING to the locker room when he thought the cameras were not on him, but then each time he finished throwing a pass, it seemed like he made an extra effort to let everyone know he was limping like he was putting on an Oscar-worthy performance with the broadcast team cheering him on adoringly.

  30. If he was smart he would contact first ballot HOF QB Russell Wilson who had a much more sever injury in 2016.

He missed one play and the next game played even better.

    He’s unlimited.

Oh come on, he is no Future HOF QB Russell Wilson….

  32. New England Cheater fans are a hoot! LOL! I never thought I’d live long enough where ANY NFL franchise fans would be envious of the Chiefs! I am relishing their tears! Keep them coming!! GLORIOUS!

  33. There’s so many awful hot takes here, I sometimes wonder if Skip Bayless has like 40 accounts at PFT.

You weren’t funny under your other name either. Donkey fans are so pathetic as they attempt to get attention

  36. If, again IF, KC loses next week, I can see all the excuses… maybe they can sign Akili Smith this week?

  37. Should manage as long as doesn’t try to run. Downside is opposing defense (bengals) will know he is a stationary qb.

  38. It’s gonna be hard for him. Imagine if he had to play the 49ers next week? He is not gonna be able to scramble and make plays like he normally does.

  39. A big part of his game is being offscript. No matter how much treatment he will be hindered. Cindy is tough and they look like a Super Bowl Team.

  40. This is going to be good because it’s a fact that It will still be swollen by Wednesday

  41. Definitely go ahead and crown Cincy it’s a wrap They don’t have enough referees to help them out of this one

Didn’t Terrell Owens play on a broken leg in the SB against NE and balled out?
