The Vikings are looking to New Orleans as they try to find a new defensive coordinator.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team has requested an interview with Saints co-defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen for the opening on Kevin O’Connell’s staff. The Vikings fired Ed Donatell late last week.

Nielsen has been with the Saints since becoming their defensive line coach in 2017. He continued working with that group after getting bumped up to co-defensive coordinator along with defensive backs coach Kris Richard when Dennis Allen became the head coach in New Orleans in 2022.

The Vikings have also requested an interview with Steelers linebackers coach Brian Flores and they’ll likely be adding more names to the list of candidates in the days to come.

Schefter adds that Nielsen is also expected to interview with the Falcons after Atlanta requested an interview with him as part of their defensive coordinator search.

  1. He is a great coach but that is not gonna fix the vikes d.

They lack tons to run anything like what the saints run. Whoever gets that job they need a total infusion of talent on that side of the ball.

  2. It’s amusing when people keep posting “he won’t succeed with the Vikings current players”. Ummm….there will be different players. It’s how free agency and the draft works. No, there won’t be 11 new starters. No, there doesn’t need to be. Oh, and the Vikes offense is pretty solid as well.

  3. No interest from the Packers? They missed the playoffs and have had extra time to realize their defense lacks a coach. Of course, the offense is lacking miserably too!

  4. Doesn’t matter what defense does when Kirk Cousins throws 3 yard pass on 4th and 8 when season is on the line. Get rid of Cousins and his anchor of a contract. Until that happens, Vikings will flounder.

So much ignorance in such a short post by you. Cousins cap for next year is 10th in nfl. And yes, it would matter to improve the defense from last to, say, even 20th. A huge difference.

Maybe the starters who started on the last three editions of poor Viking Defense should go. First.

That’s sort of the idea. But, there can be a couple pieces to salvage (Hunter, for starters).
