Giants, Saquon Barkley “weren’t really that close” during in-season contract talks

After Saturday night’s 38-7 loss to the Eagles, Giants running back Saquon Barkley said that he couldn’t envision that game being the final one he played for the team but nothing’s for certain as they head into the offseason.

Barkley played out the final year of his rookie contract in 2022 and the team’s in-season talks about a new deal didn’t bear any fruit. General Manager Joe Schoen told reporters on Monday that the two sides “weren’t really that close” during talks that wrapped up during the team’s November bye week.

The plan is to pick up those conversations again and the team is very open to bringing Barkley back, but Schoen said the team needs to take some time to set the table for the entire offseason.

“Saquon is a good player, he’s a good teammate, I loved getting to know him this season, and he’s a guy that we would like to have back, it’s just – again, we haven’t had our end-of-season meetings yet,” Schoen said, via SNY. “We’re less than 48 hours after that game, so everybody’s going to step back, take the emotion out of it, evaluate the roster, and then again, we have to operate under the salary cap with how we’re going to divvy up, how we’re going to create the roster, what at the priority positions and how are we going to move forward, but we would like to have Saquon back, if it works out.”

With quarterback Daniel Jones also out of contract, the Giants have a lot of pieces to put into place before they start any serious discussions about who will be back for another run with the team in 2023.

  1. He’s an above average NFL running back. Pay him left tackle or WR1 money at your own peril Giants.

  2. Barkley isn’t going to get what he thinks he is. The RB market is soft and he is often injured despite the good season this year. Most teams are using a two back rotation as it is.

  3. If only these athletes all decided taking a little less and building a team that could challenge for the SB every year, then I woke up to reality and the world world we live in.

  4. Barkley would be smart to take a 1-year ‘prove-it’ deal with a team that has a solid OL.

    Franchise him.

So pay him an estimated $10 million next season? Really?

  6. Its not the players as much as their agents. Every agent measures himself on taking as much as possible from the team for THEIR guy.

  7. If he’s willing to take reasonable money he could really be a difference maker to a top end team. But probably some low level team will make him an offer he can’t refuse and he’ll disappear.

  8. A great player with great character is incredibly rare. If Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants part ways, I hope he knows he will always hold a special place in the hearts of Giants fans.

  9. Unfortunately Zeke and Gurley ruined any RBs chance of getting paid for the foreseeable future.

  10. They should take whatever dollars they’re donating to Golladay and funnel it back in to Jones and Barkley.

  11. They failed to pay before he played.
He played like he plays when he plays like he can play.
Now pay like you need to pay based on his play.
60% of the time the price goes up 100% of the time.

    Yes, really.

  13. Same with Derrick Henry, a top tier pro bowl RB is fine against weak opponents during the year but when the playoffs come, they can’t even outrun lineman these days and they are worthless deeper into the playoffs until you are up by 17 late in the 4th Q and you get. there by WR’s and TE’s. You can do a end around with a 4.3 WR these days … so if you have no QB and weak WR’s, you focus on the run but it will only get you to 10-7 at best and out early in the playoffs.

  14. In all seriousness the days of a running back carrying a team are over. Even in the glory days of the “bell cow” running back in the modern era of the NFL never once did one carry the team to the Championship. Not once! It wasn’t Jim Brown who took Cleveland to the ’64 NFL Title, it was the passing game. Sayers never even made it to the playoffs in his short career. O.J. Simpson? Chuck Foreman? Lawrence McCutcheon? Walter Payton? NOPE Even the trio of Csonka, Kiick, and Morris got way too much credit. Franco Harris too. Those wins were on the defenses of those days. Last bell cow back ever was Adrian Peterson and he couldn’t do it either. Barry Sanders? Don’t bring up Emmet Smith either, there were 10 backs during his tenure that would have done what he did with the surrounding cast he played with. Barkley isn’t even the best back in his division right now. I think the Robinson kid in Washington is more dangerous.

Come on to Chicago on a fair deal and be apart of something special!

    ——————————————————————————————

If he’s going to take a “fair deal”, he’ll stay in NY. The Bears record last year was worse than any Giants team he’s been on. He probably wouldn’t consider that “something special”.

    – like the nba?

  17. LOL chmurasbabysitter.

“Except all the great RB’s that have led teams to championships that I won’t let you count for various reasons, a great RB has never led a team to a championship!”

    great insight

  18. Man Giants are in a bind with Danny Dimes & Saquon hitting market. They timed it perfectly with a big bounceback year, kudos to them. But if Schoen commits 200m to Danny and then 40-45m to Barkley, it’s asking for trouble.

    Two words – Incentive. Laden.

  19. “Except all the great RB’s that have led teams to championships that I won’t let you count for various reasons, a great RB has never led a team to a championship!”

great insight. ——————————————————————————actually it is great insight. Point being you need a complete team and giving a RB a ton of money in today’s game makes even less sense than it did back then. Adrian Peterson being the last in line. Walter Payton didn’t win one either until he had one of the best defenses EVER late in his career. Earl Campbell? I guess you can say great running backs have been very instrumental in winning Championships but they cannot and DID NOT do it alone.

  20. Just franchise him. You get him for 10 million, which is reasonable. If he gets hurt you can move on next year, or franchise him again. I know this process sucks for the player, and he could decide just to sit out. However, you don’t want to lose him, as he is a really good player. You also do not want to give him a big contract, as that hurts the team going forward. Feels like this is the only way to achieve both goals.

  21. How much is 61 rushing yards and no TDs in a playoff game worth?

I could see contender teams like Buffalo or Dallas racing to sign him, and a team that can carry most of the load in burnishing his reputation may be his best bet.

  22. Better to spend the money on a quality O-line and then go with a mid-level RB tandem. Same result and the better O-line also helps your passing game. You’re also less vulnerable to a killer injury.

  23. Barkley should never sign a running back contract again.
He should let everyone know that he is switching to wide receiver.

He is just one year older than Deebo Samuel, same height, 15-20 pounds heavier but still faster.
Samuel only beat him on the 3 cone drill, but Barkley’s times were still better than most WR’s.
