If there’s a trade, will the Packers get more for Aaron Rodgers than they got for Brett Favre?

One of the perfunctory, quota-filling, box-checking Sunday Splash! reports from divisional round weekend wasn’t really news at all. As is often the case.

There’s a very real possibility Aaron Rodgers will be traded!

Yes. Yes, there is. We knew that five days earlier, when Rodgers made it clear on Pat McAfee’s show that Rodgers believes he could be an MVP with another team — and when Rodgers basically read off a ransom note of players he wants the team to keep, or else. It was more than enough to get us to look at every possible landing spot for Rodgers, which obviously would happen via trade.

The question then becomes finding a trade partner for Rodgers. It needs to be a team he’s willing to play for. Even though he doesn’t have a no-trade clause, he made the 100-percent dead-on balls accurate observation last week with McAfee and company that no team for which he doesn’t want to play will be trading for him.

So what will Rodgers want? Where will he want to play?

Will he want to play for a team that is stacked at every position except quarterback? On the surface, why wouldn’t he? At a deeper level, that puts even more pressure on Rodgers to be the difference maker.

Maybe the play will be to go to a team that will have reasonable expectations, even if he’s on that team. Peter King suggested the Jets in his latest edition of Football Morning in America, a fitting repeat of the Brett Favre career arc. King also floated the Patriots and the Raiders.

The Packers will want compensation for Rodgers. The Jets gave up a conditional fourth-round pick for Favre, which could have (but didn’t) become a first-round pick. It’s hard to imagine Rodgers yielding much more than that; for the Green Bay front office, the value primarily comes from unloading his $58.3 million compensation package for 2023, and secondarily from, you know, Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead.

Also, it’s one thing to give up a pair of first-round picks for a young player. It’s quite another to give up major draft-pick compensation for a guy who is clearly on a year-to-year arrangement. Hell, there’s a chance (remote but still not implausible) that Rodgers would decide after the offseason program that he made a mistake, and that he shouldn’t continue his career at all.

Wherever he plays in 2023, he needs to be all in. He needs to be fully engaged. If he’s with a new team, it becomes even more important to be present and engaged. He’ll need to get to know his new teammates. More importantly, they’ll need to get to know him.

So, yes, it’s a real possibility that he’ll be traded. That’s not news. It’s obvious. He’ll either play for the Packers, retire, or play for someone else.

  1. Rodgers believes he could be an MVP with another team and lose in the first playoff game

  2. This cad is so repugnant. He is always in it for himself. Definitely not a team player. I hope he goes to a team who has an entire roster of clowns who think they are the only ones on the team.

  3. Yes a lot more. Different time and different values on the picks. See recent QB trades: Trey Lance, Carson Wentz twice, Sam Bradford, Russell Wilson, Matt Stafford. All traded for more than Farve, and Rodgers is much better than all of them.

  4. The Packers aren’t really a major threat to get to the Super Bowl with him, so it makes sense for both sides to move on.

  5. Rodgers saw how Brady chose a young talented rising team to revive his career in Tampa Bay and thinks he can do the same. Can’t blame him, Green Bay is going nowhere next year.

  6. Trade where? Raiders? The Jets? I can see the Jets doing something stupid. Who would take on that money at his age, the diva status and entitlement and cough up the picks?

This trade needed to happen before he was paid. If there is a team dumb enough to do it, they’re cooked.

  7. Hope he stays in GB, they are far more dysfunctional with him there. He plays there next year, is unhappy because they’ll lose in the first round of the playoffs if they even make it and the Packers get squat for him.

  8. Any team that trades for this guy will rue the day they have up a king’s ransom for someone who doesn’t really care anymore.

  9. In my opinion – the only thing that the organization is going to value is the $50 million in salary that they dont have to pay – the other thing is what it the Dead Cap going to be – hope it is not like what Atlanta absorbed when they traded Ryan. Finally – dont know whether or not AR’s ego is going to come into play here – but if he agrees to be moved but only for a lesser round pick – will he be pissed? I will be very happy if it is for a couple of second rounders ( we always pick crappy in the 3rd round) and his full salary. Vegas will agree to that I am sure. I wouldnt mind Miami and let Tua get his head straight for a year – or retire. That boy might ruin hs afterlife if he keeps getting his bell rung.

  10. I don’t see a trade working out.

Rodgers cap number is a bargain for 2023; $15.7~mil… but the massive option gets prorated over the next 3 seasons, and its just a mess from there for whoever acquires him. Being that he’s probably a year to year player right now, who would want 3 $15.6~mil guaranteed hits on the books for a guy that won’t finish that contract?

.. I think the right team *might* give the Packers a conditional 1st rounder, which is more than the Packers got for Favre.

… considering Rodgers will want the Brady-Diva-pick my own team treatment, I REALLY don’t see this happening.

  11. A 2nd rounder in 2024 with a conditional 2025 pick dependent on A. whether he plays in 2024 and B. How well he plays in 2024.

  12. Isn’t this yesterday’s news? Isn’t Rodgers the real Mr. Irrelevant these days? Does it really matter where this guy plays next year or if he does not play at all?

  13. Can’t blame him, Green Bay is going nowhere next year.

7 1st rounders on defense, Kenny Clark is the only guy over 25 years old.. pretty substantial FA investment as well.

If they could ever play to their potential, things would look alot different.

  14. Joe Douglas hasn’t had all of his moves work out, but his approach seems ground and sound. I don’t think Rodgers fits Salah and what the Jets are trying to do. The Jets are much more likely to get Tannehill than Rodgers.

  15. Interesting idea – Green Bay trades with Dallas and gets Dakota plus draft picks. Ewwin Wawgers would get the spot light he craves and a star to burnish. And then he has all the weapons he claims he doesn’t have. Dallas gets to send Dakota to a place that is as cold as he plays.

  16. In my opinion – the only thing that the organization is going to value is the $50 million in salary that they dont have to pay – the other thing is what it the Dead Cap going to be – hope it is not like what Atlanta absorbed when they traded Ryan.

Rodgers cap number for 2023 is only $15.7~mil, even if they pick up the massive option.

IF he was traded, the dead money number is $40.3~mil.

IF they trade him after June 1, they can split that between 2023 and 2024.

Robert, Rodgers is a lot older than any of those players. And Bradford hasn’t played in a very long time.

Rumor is Gruden offered a 1st for Favre in 2008.

The Bucs and Packers played that season, and Thompson didn’t want a Favre Revenge game.

.. shame in hindsight. Maybe Favre would have got his wish and walked away, avoiding all the Viking drama.

  19. Considering the amount of Dead Cap the Packers would have to eat,.. yes they NEED to get more than what they got in the Favre trade. That has to be part of the consideration. That’s salary reduction for what ever team acquires him. They have to pay for that luxury. I’m not sure a 1st is in the cards,.. but it needs to be a 2nd and another pick. Maybe a 3rd or 4th to boot.

  20. I don’t see how the Packers could pull off a trade. His dead cap hit for 2023 is $99.8 million if they trade him this season. I think they can spread that out over two seasons if they trade him after June 1, but that’s still a lot of money. Keeping him is a cap hit of $31.6 million. If they wait until next year to trade him, the dead cap is only $24.5 million, but who’s going to want him then? The Packers’ only hope is that he would retire but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

  21. Not sure where all this losing in the first round stuff comes from? Rodgers is 11-10 in the playoffs and went to the nfccg in 2019 and 2020. Just lazy.

Rodgers believes he could be an MVP with another team and lose in the first playoff game

No way the Packers trade him to Vikings!Haha.
If the experts on here could be objective and look at this honestly, they would see even after a down year he is still a top 10 QB in the league.GB is looking to remake the team to be relevant again for the next 10 years unlike the other teams in their division.
The team trading for him will probably need to rework his contract and need assurance he is committed to 2-3 years but there is still value in AR as a QB especially in the right situtation.Jets,Titans, and Dolphins are great spots.Other than Hurts right now is there another NFC QB better?

Geno Smith, Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, Daniel Jones, Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, Matthew Stafford, Kyler Murray, Justin Fields…

  24. I don’t see how the Packers could pull off a trade. His dead cap hit for 2023 is $99.8 million if they trade him this season.
    ==========

    Its not.

Thats the dead cap if they cut him beacuse the option becomes fully guaranteed.

  25. Rodgers greed has killed any chance the Pack had of getting value for him.
    ===========

The Packers are fully complicit in this.

They’ve done nothing but cater to his every whim.

  26. Rodgers would make the Jets instant contenders in the AFC.
The price to obtain him is diminished only by Rodgers age and longevity left in the league.
Rodgers will come fairly cheap as far as draft pick compensation goes because the team acquiring him is eating that salary.
If he was bargain and was making half of what he is scheduled to make the draft pick compensation would be hefty.
Favre was under contract when traded to the Jets as a rent player because the guaranteed money was year to year with no long term restraints on when the Jets could release him as well the Favre only occupied roughly 10% of the Jets cap space to roster him.
With Rodgers scheduled to make 5 times what Zach Wilson is scheduled to make Rodgers would consume 25% of the Jets cap space in 2023.
Rodgers will require more than a 4th to obtain him. The argument or fact is really the Jets got a huge bargain in Favre when became a Jet .

  27. Not sure where all this losing in the first round stuff comes from? Rodgers is 11-10 in the playoffs and went to the nfccg in 2019 and 2020. Just lazy.
    ==========

Rodgers won his 1st round game 6 of 9 times since the Super Bowl.

He had won his 1st round game 5x in a row prior to last year.

  28. In addition to the contract issues and looming retirement, there is one other reason Rodgers is going nowhere. His relationship with the daughter of the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks appears to be getting serious and he is a minority owner of the Bucks. He is not going anywhere but back to GB. All the other stuff is a bunch of hot air in an attempt to get some of his “past their prime” old buddies to be kept on the GB roster.

  29. If it’s based on ability alone, Rodgers is worth a 1st rounder if he commits to the new team for 3 years. The problem is what team is willing or able to take that cap hit moving forward, which will be substantial and reduce the trade value. That and you know Rodgers will narrow those teams he’s willing to go to, further handcuffing the Packers’ trade leverage. This should be entertaining.

  30. I don’t think Rodgers fits Salah and what the Jets are trying to do.
    ==========

I don’t see it happening… but Rodgers has won back-to-back MVPs in Salehs offense, for what thats worth..

  31. 7 1st rounders on defense, Kenny Clark is the only guy over 25 years old.. pretty substantial FA investment as well.

If they could ever play to their potential, things would look alot different.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Poor coaching kills potential.

aaron may as well retire since Cousins already beat him going to Canton this year

  32. With Rodgers scheduled to make 5 times what Zach Wilson is scheduled to make Rodgers would consume 25% of the Jets cap space in 2023.

    Aaron Rodgers 2023 cap number – $15.7~mil
    Zach Wilson 2023 cap number – $9.5~mil

After 2023, yes, Rodgers contract gets ugly.

If Rodgers is traded prior to 6/1/23 the Packers dead cap is $40,313 in 2023.
Trade him after June 1st it would only be $15,833,870 cap hit in 2023 & $24,480,000 2024.

Rodgers has a Fully Guaranteed base salary of $1,165,000 in 2023 with a fully guaranteed option bonus of $58.3M to be exercised no later then week 1 of the 2023 season. Failure to exercise the bonus by the team that trades for him automatically converts that $58.3 Million option bonus into salary for 2023.
Making his cap number $59,515,000 for the 2023 season for any team that acquires him or only $15.79 million if the team that acquires him exercised the option bonus allowing the trading team to spread the bonus money out of the remaining years.

  34. If they could ever play to their potential, things would look alot different

And if my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle. Maybe they did play to their potential and this is it. Just because you think they should be better doesn’t mean they really are. Rodgers is only going to get more squirrelly than he already is. Hate the Packers but Favre did the same thing to them, best thing they can do to help themselves is trade him for whatever they can get and move on .

Just like Cousins… except for the MVP part.

  36. “The Packers will want compensation for Rodgers. The Jets gave up a conditional fourth-round pick for Favre, which could have (but didn’t) become a first-round pick. It’s hard to imagine Rodgers yielding much more than that”

    This ^

The trade of Favre was after he led the Packers to a 13 – 3 season, a NFC North title and and NFC Championship game appearance – demonstrating that Favre actually was still playing at a very high level.

Rodgers led the Packers to an 8 – 9 season, a 3rd place finish in the NFC North, was playing golf before the playoffs started and had his worst year ever as a starter for the Packers (statiscally) – demonstrating that he was playing at a below average level.

Dreams of getting a first round pick after someone bails the Packers out of that contract is just that – a dream.

More likely the Packers have to pick up part of the option bonus and maybe then they can get a 4th round pick.
