Jonathan Gannon: Brock Purdy “really good,” he plays extremely fast

The 49ers have won the first seven starts of rookie quarterback Brock Purdy‘s NFL career and extending that run to eight will put the team in the Super Bowl.

Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will be charged with coming up with a game plan that sends Purdy down to defeat for the first time since he took over the starting quarterback job. On Tuesday, Gannon said that the combination of Purdy’s talent and Kyle Shanahan calling the shots will make it a tough task for the Eagles.

“He’s a good player. He’s a really good player,” Gannon said. “He plays extremely fast. He knows where to put his eyes. He gets out of trouble at a pretty good clip, and what I mean by that, you see some free runners or the pocket breakdown and guys have hard time getting him on the ground. He doesn’t take a lot of sacks, but he makes quick decisions, he’s accurate, he gets the ball out of his hand. You know that Kyle is a really good coach. He knows how to coach the quarterback of what they’re trying to get done with certain plays, and he’s doing that. That’s a reason that they’re playing in this game.”

Eagles assistant defensive backs coach D.K. McDonald was at Iowa State when Purdy was there. Gannon said McDonald has “a whole list of things . . . we need to get done to have a chance” against Purdy and that is being used as part of the process of preparing for this Sunday’s shot at the Super Bowl.

  1. The two best defenses, two great run based offenses (though vastly different in style), QBs who don’t turn the ball over, exceptional skill players who can change the game instantly…Going to be a touugh, tight game that can go either way. I think my Niners will pull it out, but won’t be shocked if we lose either.

To the victor go the spoils

So said Bobby Bacala to Tony T during Season 2

  3. Only Seahawks fans refer to the Niners as “Clara”, thinking is some 8th-gradeish way it’s a real burn. We know the score there, though. Yes, the Eagles are a great team and will be a big challenge for the Niners on Sunday. I couldn’t imagine being in the same division as them and beating them three times in one year like Clara did to Seattle this year.

  4. A lot of jealousy this time of year. Especially for those rival fans of teams that are still in the mix. Feels great to be a Chiefs/Eagles/Bengals/49ers fan this week. Go Niners!!!

  5. It’s great to see all the Talking Heads Predict a Philadelphia win. Both Quarterbacks are classy guys and there dads were coaches and raised them well. Neither gets rattled. Should be fun.

  6. 9ers in another tight one. Eagles haven’t played a team as talented as this one that’s coming to town. 9ers have the edge in many key areas, most importantly playoff experience – Brock already has more playoff wins than Jalen.

Let’s at least be real. The 9ers also haven’t exactly played a team as talented as Philly either. That’s why it should be a bruising battle with two strong defenses. Frankly I lean towards Philly getting the win since Purdy has never experienced a playoff road game and is traveling across the country. If San Fran had the #1 seed I would very likely lean towards a 9ers victory. That’s how well I think these teams match up.

  8. Both teams are uber talented, although I give the coaching edge to Shanahan who has been there more than Siriani. On the other hand game is in Philly and they are even more run based than Niners with a running QB, which takes some of the pressure off. I wouldn’t bet on this game, anything could happen, although I am hoping for one for the ages.
