Kyle Shanahan: Brock Purdy has been “unbelievable” with avoiding turnovers

One of the most notable elements of Brock Purdy‘s play has been his ability to take care of the football.

Since he took over for Jimmy Garoppolo in the Week 13 win over the Dolphins, Purdy has thrown just three interceptions and he hasn’t fumbled in eight games.

In San Francisco’s two playoff games, Purdy has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 546 yards with three touchdowns and no picks — good for a 109.9 passer rating.

Purdy’s success as a seventh-round rookie — let alone the last pick of the draft — is unprecedented. But his ability to avoid turnovers is something head coach Kyle Shanahan especially appreciates.

“Yes, he’s been unbelievable with that,” Shanahan said in his Monday conference call with reporters. “I think that’s the No. 1 thing he’s done. And to be able to be as good with the ball as he has while still making a number of the plays that he has, that’s definitely the thing I’ve been most impressed with.”

While Purdy’s success has been remarkable, he’ll surely be tested when playing a strong Philadelphia defense in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

  1. Yes I’m biased as a Niner fan, but how can anyone not root for this kid? Just hoping for a good game and not a blow out. Eagles are excellent in every phase of the game and deserve some respect for how great they’ve been all year.

  2. One of his interceptions was on a 4th down so it was going to be a turnover either way so they took a deep shot. The other one was tipped by the receiver. I don’t remeber the 3rd.

  3. There is something to be said for a game manager; you don’t win with a fake QB wearing a costume hiding his true running back intentions. Purdy is highly intelligent and quickly processes the field; you cannot say that about Jayleen Hurts.

  4. Who knows how long it will last, but the Niners clearly have caught lightning in a bottle.

He was tested by the good cowboys D too. He did fine. Not like the guy on the other team.

Btw, I know Jimmy has played well this year but most niners fan would attest that Jimmy has had a penchant of having a turnover at the most importune moment. We lived on the edge. Haven’t seen that issue with this kid.

  6. Honestly I don’t think he’s as good as Jimmy G. But the one thing he doesn’t do is make that back-breaking interception in the 4th quarter, which makes him a keeper.

  7. I hope Shanahan knocked on wood after that statement.
Not saying jinxes are real, but I’m not sure you want to tempt fate regardless.

Truly…I think being a native Philadelphian (as I am) is currently the only cure for not rooting for Brock Purdy.

Purdy does take care of the ball, doesn’t he? I’m hoping the Eagles D will change that on Sunday! But I know what I’ve been seeing from this kid. He’s been so poised, I know we can’t count on the young-kid-getting-rattled-and-giving-up-the-ball formula.

Thanks for giving our Eagles some props. Right back at ya. The 9ers are the scariest team in the conference and deserve to be in this title game.

(PS. This is *so much better* than the way Vikings fans behaved before the Eagles wiped them out in the 2017 NFCCG)

  9. He’s throwing plenty of them D just not catching them Plus he had 4 turnover worthy plays just this weekend

  10. Can’t wait for Sunday. To Eagles fans…ton of respect for the team you have over there. We have a common bond with our mutual hatred of the Cowboys. Obviously don’t want to lose but can stomach a loss to this Eagles team over any loss to the cow patties. Sticking with my 49ers 24 Eagles 19 prediction. Let’s Rumble!
