49ers used Week 15 at Seattle to prepare for possible playoff game at Phiadelphia

Of the eight games quarterback Brock Purdy has played for the 49ers, six have happened at home. The road trips consisted of a Week 15 visit to Seattle and a Week 17 trip to Las Vegas.

Both Purdy and coach Kyle Shanahan explained to reporters on Wednesday that the team used the Thursday night road game in December against the Seahawks as advance preparation for an eventual playoff game at Philadelphia.

“We’ll do the same thing we did that week,” Shanahan said. “That was huge just because that was our first game really all year that it was that important and Brock hadn’t had experience with it and so it was great to have that, especially with us going to Philly. I remember I was talking about that that week that we needed that. We needed that rep in case we ended up in the NFC Championship at Philly and we got that and very fortunate that we did. And I feel we’re good to go. He knows what to expect, he knows how we do it and we’ll give him reps at it all week, but he got it ready on just a Wednesday when he played Thursday, so I feel like won’t be an issue this week.”

Shanahan added that, to simulate the noise in Philly, they’ll crank up the music in practice this week.

“When we played Seattle that week, [Shanahan] did say it was good preparation for what we might have to play in, in terms of the playoffs, going on the road for road games and obviously for Philadelphia,” Purdy said. “Everything in these kinds of games is all about communication. How can you operate smoothly, get in and out of the huddle, get the play off in the right way, make sure everyone’s on the same page, so that’s definitely a big emphasis this week just at practice with the little things, the details of communicating and being on point. And that starts with the cadence, so it’s going to be huge for us.”

It finishes with Purdy not freaking out in the moment. Then again, he hasn’t freaked out yet, through eight games as the replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo.

If he leads the team to a win on Sunday and a berth in Super Bowl LVII, it will become very difficult to not make him the starter in 2023.

  1. Ask any athlete or real competitor

Yea you want that game at home with your fans, of course but….. Sports wise

NOTHING BETTER then going on the road, all you got is the man/brother next to you and EVERYONE against you, shutting that crowd up and walking out with a win.

All that east coast talk bout we weak in west, it’s the Linc, it’s cold, it’s this it’s that. IT’S OUR TIME

    WE COMING like Deion said

WE WINNING THE SUPERBOWL THIS SEASON

  2. Seattle is loud but they’ve got nothing on Philly fans in a playoff game, especially since the fans are getting so much billboard material.

  3. It’s already very difficult, I think, not to make him the starter next year. I do hope Lynch and Shanahan are familiar with the economics thinking about sunk costs.

  4. If the commanders can win in philly the niners sure as hell can. These guys are professionals playing football at the highest level. Crowd noise is just part of the deal. Alot of them have experienced it since college.

  5. Lol – people making a big deal about Purdy freaking out. For one thing he’s about the most calm poised QB I’ve seen, at least with the niners.

Also he’s played plenty of games in front of much larger more hostile crowds than Philly. How big is the capacity of the Philly stadium?

Have a lot of respect for the eagles. They may indeed win but I doubt it’s because Purdy freaks out. It’s more likely that if the eagles win it will be because of their offense with Hurts running the ball

  6. Overlooking teams is never a good look and it’s always easy to say stuff like that after you won lol Hes definitely capping

  7. Trey Lance has to be torn…On one hand he wants his team and teammates to win a SB, but on the other hand he’s sat for 2+ years now and may be out of a job next year before he gets an opportunity. Reminds me a bit of Josh Rosen in that regard. (Just a tiny bit.)

  8. He’s already the starter next year. That was proven on third down when Shanahan called a pass. He wouldn’t have done that for Jimmy or Trey. Shanahan trusts Brock more than both of those guys.

Jimmy gets a new gig as a FA next year and Trey continues to develop as a back up. When your seventh round pick becomes your starter you don’t need to worry about the draft capital you spent on your back up.

  9. Purdy’s been great, but he hasn’t played a game further east than Las Vegas. Las Vegas and Seattle are his only two road games. The Linc during a NFC Championship game is a different beast altogether. Niners are a good team and Purdy should have the job next year, but their streak ends on Sunday.

  10. Time outs just to get a play in lose games sometimes because you need them later. False starts can be drive killers and the margin for error is just about zero if you want to beat the Eagles

  11. Yes, a flight from San Francisco to Seattle for a road Thursday game is really similar to flying to Philly and playing a conference championship game three time zones away from home. Starting to get the impression that the Niners have no clue what kind of environment they’ll be walking into on Sunday.

They don’t play against the fans, they play against the Eagles. Eagles are a much better team than Seattle but it wasn’t like Seattle didn’t get up to play that game, their playoff hopes were on the line.

Dude, if anything, this niners squad is very battle tested with regards to playoffs and loud stadiums. They went on the road thrice last playoffs and beat Dallas and GB on the road. Seattle’s stadium is considered one of the most hostile loud places.

What playoff experience and adversity has Philly faced?
Don’t get me wrong- I respect Philly. But they won’t win because niners got overwhelmed due to hostile crowd. You don’t think kittle has been in big situations before?

  14. Does it really matter?

Niners only buy tickets to the NFC Champ Game.

    Next stop, offseason Niners’ fans.
