The three finalists for the Associated Press comeback player of the year award all saw action in the postseason this year, which helps illustrate how much their fortunes improved over where they were a year ago.

Giants running back Saquon Barkley had torn his ACL in 2020 and looked like a pedestrian back for a 4-13 team while Christian McCaffrey finished his second straight season on injured reserve. Quarterback Geno Smith got some playing time when Russell Wilson was injured, but was otherwise strapped to the bench in Seattle.

In 2022, however, Barkley ran 295 times for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns to help send the Giants to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season. McCaffrey got traded from the Panthers to the 49ers in the middle of the season and scored 10 touchdowns in 11 games to help his new team to a division title.

Smith took over as the starter for the Seahawks after Wilson was traded to the Broncos and led the league with a 69.8 completion percentage while throwing for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns.

PFT chose McCaffrey for the comeback player of the year award and the AP’s choice will be revealed on February 9.

  1. I really think Geno Smith deserves this.
I thought he was out of the league and forgotten, and to have a season like he had is pretty incredible.

  2. How can you come back from bench mediocrity? It should be Jones for all the heat he has taken from New York while playing with nobody receivers. Barkley came back from injury and CMC quit playing till he went to SF …

  3. Geno Smith showed why organization and coaches could make or break a QB. Looks like this Jets cast-off wasn’t all that bad after all. I’m convinced if the Jets drafted Peyton Manning he wouldn’t have been nearly the same guy that he was in Indy

  4. How can Geno Smith be COMEBACK of the year winner when he NEVER had a good year until 2022. I’d pick Barkley for he overcame a devastating injury that caused a down year then cameback fantastically. Ditto with McCafferty.

  5. Brandon Graham tore his Achilles in Week 2 of last year. He came back this season and set a career high in sacks (11) at 34 years-old. He’s not even a finalist?

  6. Easily should be Geno Smith, who came back from total irrelevance – he was out of football entirely in 2019 – to a Pro Bowl season at age 32.

  7. Voting Geno isn’t really the spirit of the award. He should be in the most improved category?

I don’t think Geno was ever out of football entirely for a whole year. He was either with the chargers or Seahawks in ‘19. I still agree he should win though

  9. The Jags whole team is the comeback of the year..That entire franchise was a joke last year but comeback to win a division AND am Epic playoff game comeback..

  10. We all know Geno Smith will get snubbed for this award, even though his comeback spanned FAR longer than either of the injury-prone RB finalists. It’s one thing to get injured, do your rehab, heal and be great again. It’s a whole other level to be casted aside as a bust, stick with it as a back-up for 10 years, work your tail off, be a good teammate and when you get your chance again you blow the socks off the league and show the world you were never the bust they said you were. I don’t care what the national media says but Geno’s accomplishment is so much harder than these other guys. He deserves it, no matter how bad they snub him.
