Former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer will have a role on Deion Sanders’ staff at the University of Colorado.

Sanders confirmed that during an interview with Thee Pregame Show posted on YouTube on Monday. He did not indicate Zimmer’s role.

Zimmer served as an analyst for Sanders at Jackson State in 2022.

Former Florida State head coach Willie Taggart also is joining the Colorado staff.

“Taggart’s coming, too, by the way,” Sanders said during the interview. “Coach Zimmer’s coming, too, by the way. So another two head coaches. One in the NFL as well as collegiate. But not only that. Forget the titles — they know this game and they know kids and they’ve been capable of making tremendous decisions with the kids and the young men in mind. So that’s what I adore the most — understanding how to establish the relationships with these young men.”

Zimmer was the Vikings’ head coach for eight seasons. He also has served as a defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Falcons and Bengals.

He was the defensive backs coach of the Cowboys from 1995-99 when Sanders was a cornerback for the team.

  1. Whatever perspective Deion had of Zimmer as his coach, that’s what he wants his players to experience. It has to do with life as much as football, but to Deion, it’s all the same thing. Zimmer obviously made an impression on Deion. Deion is also going to make sure his buddy goes out on top. Colorado football is going Prime Time. Literally.

  2. It’ll be good to have him around football again after some serious family tragedy. Outcoached Sean Payton in multiple playoff games too btw. Welcome to town Zim!

  3. Zimmer has finally found his niche in life by following a former player into college football. Maybe he’ll become a better teacher than he was a professional coach.

  4. Deion will eventually succeed Saban at Alabama once he retires. He will build Colorado into a perennial contender. It’s all about recruiting. He will need to fortify the trenches. He has no problem getting skill guys to join him.

  5. Wow! Deion is going to use the portal to get some serious talent at Colorado of all places! What 3 or 4 star player who’s been rejected by Georgia or Alabama wouldn’t go here now!

    I’m getting my popcorn ready!

  6. Forget the titles — they know this game and they know kids and they’ve been capable of making tremendous decisions with the kids and the young men in mind. So that’s what I adore the most — understanding how to establish the relationships with these young men.”

Zimmer’s 66. Sure he has a lot of experience but establish relationships with 18-20 yr old men, I doubt it.

  7. At least Zimmer won’t be able to scream at college kids until his eyes bleed. He’s got that going for him.

  8. I guess it’s good to have a job you love enough to never retire. But retirement is good too.

  9. Well, we can now rule out Kirk Cousins joining Deion’s staff as throw-it-short-of -the -sticks coordinator.

  10. Buffalo’s are going to make some noise. It’s a good thing. College football is becoming terribly bland.

  11. So basically Deion will be the coach in name only. Deion plays a caricature of a pastor – zero experience coaching at the D1 level, now Zimmer will be running ops basically behind the scenes and Deion will get credit if Colorado turns it around

  12. This won’t end well. Sanders is a master at that for the kids thing.
Isn’t the PAC 12 much different then the SWAC ?

  13. Looks like prime time is putting together a coaching staff for an NFL team?? I give him and that staff 2 yrs till they all go to the NFL. The NFL would love having prime time as a HC

  14. College football is more about amassing talent than actual coaching (see: Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier’s terms in the NFL).

Deion gets that, and having a former NFL and big-time ACC coach on board should help Colorado amass that talent

  15. Zimmer was probably ecstatic he was getting to leave Jackson as anyone who has lived there will tell you.

  16. Zim will bring that championship winning tradition from his head coaching gig. Oh wait . . .

  17. Good luck with that. Zimmer needs to let go of the coaching by intimidation approach. The players don’t react well to that today. He’s no Parcels and Parcels wouldn’t be successful operating that way either. There’s a reason these guys get out. They realize the game and their archaic ways have passed them by.

  18. Zim’s style may be more appropriate for college anyhow. He must not have received any D-coordinator interviews.

  19. Say what you want, but Deion has no equal as a self-promoter and personal brand builder. He may not be the GOAT at it but he’s right up there in the Gene Simmons/Madonna tier.
