Jets hire Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator

The Jets have found their new offensive coordinator.

The team announced the hiring of Nathaniel Hackett on Thursday morning. Hackett replaces Mike LaFleur, who left the team after the end of the regular season.

Hackett spent the first 15 games of the 2022 season as the head coach of the Broncos, but he was fired with two weeks left in the season after he made a series of in-game blunders and was unable to put together a capable offense after the offseason trade for Russell Wilson.

The Jets had their own disappointing Wilson at quarterback in 2022, but the Hackett hiring is likely to lead to speculation about the team moving on from Zach Wilson this offseason. Hackett was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay before taking the Broncos job and his arrival with the Jets will have some people thinking about the AFC East team trying to make a trade for Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

There were similar thoughts in Denver when Hackett was hired, but that obviously didn’t come to fruition. Whether Rodgers comes to New Jersey or not, the Jets will be hoping that Hackett avoids a repeat of his on-field results with the Broncos.

  1. Good hire. Being a HC is a rough job and things can spiral out of hand fast, especially if you’re married to a QB with the skills set of Rex Grossman and paid like an NBA all star.

    Hackett can certainly run a great offense.

  2. So either it was all Russ why Denver was so bad or the Jets are making another, in a long never ending line, franchise debilitating hire.

  3. Proof that once you’re an NFL insider it’s basically impossible to fail so badly you won’t immediately get another job. Broncos couldn’t have looked any worse under Hackett and he had to give up playcalling because they were so terrible. (And they immediately improved once he got canned.) Good luck, Jets. You’re going to need it.

  4. Makes perfect sense. Hire the guy that never called plays in Green Bay, failed miserably at it in Denver (in addition to head coaching), just so you can get a shot at Aaron Rodgers. Denver got stuck with him last year without Rodgers and see how that turned out.

  5. To help save Zach Wilson let’s hire the coach that almost helped ruin Trevor Lawrence 😂

    Hackett can certainly run a great offense.

    ———————————————————————————-

    Can he? What has he ever done? You can’t count his time in GB. I think the rest of the AFC East is pretty happy about this hire!

  7. “If you can… Hackett there, you can Hackett… anywhere”

    Unfortunately, his QB situation with the Jets is worse than what he had in Denver.

  8. As someone who follows the Jets it’s most like this that caused me to lose interest in the team and begin looking at other teams.

    I’m tired of following a poorly run organization.

  9. There is a reason certain franchises are habitual losers. Hackett never called plays until he was a head coach last year and we saw how that went. The broncos brought him in hoping Rogers would request a trade there. Does Rogers even believe in the guy or was just being nice when asked the question. The jets needed an experienced play caller. An absolute sure thing and this ain’t it.

  10. Wow. Just, wow. I really thought I had seen it all. Terrible offensive coach. Obviously the Bronco situation, but Nathaniel was not good at Buffalo or Jacksonville when he called plays. One good year in Jacksonville, then was fired early in the next season. Best of luck, NY. You need it.

  11. Lots of guys get promoted to something they can’t handle like head coach because they were good at something else – like Vic Fangio. The Packers certainly missed Hackett when it came to red zone efficiency this past season.

  12. Questionable hiring. From a Broncos fan, it was so bad that he legit gave the play calling duties to Klint Kubiak, to where it got so bad it went to Justin Outten. A lot of better options out there, but my guess is that they are “making a run for Rodgers” which was the same mistake Denver made ironically.

  13. Is Hackett also bringing that other dude with him from Denver to tell him when to call time out?

    Jets doing Jets things.

  14. If I can Hackett there, I’ll Hackett… any-where!
    It’s. Up. To. YOU… NEW. YORK. New Yoooooorrk!!

  15. I watched this guy call play for the Bills. I called it the “Run, run, pass, punt offense”. I remember Hackett being touted to bills fans as this offensive innovator, but his play calling was so predictable that the TV announcers used to be able to predict the next play. They would use specific personnel groups for runs and specific personnel groups for passes, so you knew by the personnel if it was a run or pass.

    I am sure he’s improved since his time in Buffalo though.

    Just call him the Wilson killer! J-O-K-E-S! JOKES! JOKES! JOKES!
    —————————————————————-
    You just gave me a great idea for a movie!
    This Guy’s trapped on a desert Island alone with his pal Wilson…

  17. Hackett is a good offensive coach. Being OC in GB isn’t the same as having full run of an offense. Like any good coach, he will be better if he has good people around him.

  18. Hackett was the playcaller in Jax, which included getting Bortles to a championship game, and Buffalo. Saleh and Matt Le Fleur are best friends, I’m sure he got the full download on Hackett.

  19. Jets have gone from a team that made me shake my head in disbelief everytime they did something to a team that is quietly building an impressive coaching staff and roster. What a steal of a hire.

  20. Being a head coach is a whole different ball game. He, like many fail at being a head coach but do very well in different positions. People on here like to sound smart and witty so they say ignorant things. The whole “he did not call plays” thing is BS too. There is much more to being an OC than calling plays. Which he has done in GB as well. MF said that when he left last year.

  21. I think this is a horrible hire and my heart goes out to every Jets Fan.
    This however may be a ploy to trade for A-Aron. He’s be good for the Jets and I personally think would see immediate benefits
    A. Jets defense is stout and playoff ready
    B. Jets OLine is really good
    C. He has some good receivers in N. Y. To throw to.
    This actually makes sense to me. Rodgers a draft day trade to NY Jets is my prediction.

  22. Going from one nepotism OC, to another nepotism OC. Good luck with that. They need to trade for Rodgers to put a positive spin on this.

  23. Hmmm?? Or is a much cheaper Jordan Love on the horizon for those tricky Jets? With perhaps a 3rd round pick and Zach back to the Pack? Hmmmm? Hmmmmmmmmm????

  24. Does Rogers even believe in the guy or was just being nice when asked the question.
    ===========

    Undeniably, Rodgers played some of his best football under this guy.

  25. He’s only the OC but it feels like the Gase hire years ago, a complete letdown.
    I fully expect this guy to fail…

    Lots of guys get promoted to something they can’t handle like head coach because they were good at something else – like Vic Fangio. The Packers certainly missed Hackett when it came to red zone efficiency this past season.

    Not so sure about that. I think the Packers missed Devante Adams when it came to any kind of offensive efficiency. For the first half of the season, until Christian Watson found his mojo, Lazard was the go-to guy. Lazard is not a #1 receiver by any stretch.

    Regarding Vic Fangio, he takes heat for his record in Denver. In 2019 he had Joe Flacco, Drew Lock and Brandon Allen as QBs. In 2020 he had Drew Lock, Jeff Driskol and Brett Rypien as QBs. In 2021 he had Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Lock and Brett Rypien as QBs. Through this mix of QBs he managed a 19 – 30 record while developing one of the league’s best defenses. I think he should have won COY every year for accomplishing what he did.

  27. This actually makes sense to me. Rodgers a draft day trade to NY Jets is my prediction.
    ==========

    It makes more sense for the Packers to trade Rodgers after the Draft (June 1)

    They can break up the cap hit over 2023 and 2024.

    Otherwise its the full $40~mil goes on the books for 2023.

  28. Saleh and Matt Le Fleur are best friends, I’m sure he got the full download on Hackett.
    ==========

    Why did Mike LaFleur get pushed out?

  29. NYC is the perfect place for Broadway Aaron Rodgers. A Prima Dona like him in the Bright Lights of the Big City is a show I can’t wait to see.

  30. Good hire. Just because a guy has a bad year in a new position doesn’t make him a bad coach at his previous position. See Josh McDaniels. All he has to do he keep the offense moving forward. The Jets are a defensive led team. AFC is going to be one tough division if it wasn’t already.

  31. So either it was all Russ why Denver was so bad or the Jets are making another, in a long never ending line, franchise debilitating hire.
    ==========

    For the life of me I can’t understand why Russ couldn’t make that offense work for him. It seemed perfect for his skillset.

    Not just in Denver, his final year in Seattle as well.

  32. Big Pharma won’t let A-A Ron go anywhere – the black choppers are flying around EVERYWHERE

  33. Hackett was a great coach and got everyone in the offense on the same page in Green Bay but he was not a play-caller. Designer maybe, but not caller.

  34. He may be an okay OC (obviously a lousy HC), but without a QB the second coming of Bill Walsh wouldn’t make a difference.

  35. Not so sure about that. I think the Packers missed Devante Adams when it came to any kind of offensive efficiency. For the first half of the season, until Christian Watson found his mojo, Lazard was the go-to guy. Lazard is not a #1 receiver by any stretch.
    ==========

    The O-line didn’t settle out until Bakhtiari and Jenkins were back to full strength around midseason.

    Rodgers injuries didn’t help. And LaFluer stubbornly wouldn’t lean on his running game.

    It was a worst case scenario kind of season.

    … I’m hopeful thats the case, anyway. If this is the new normal, YIKES!

    LOL!
    This guy was a disaster in Denver. Jets gonna Jet!
    ———————————————————————————————Looks like Rusty doesn’t know the difference between what a head coach does and what an OC does. Not surprising. Remember that other guy that was a disaster in Denver, Josh McDaniels. Then of course there was that guy that was a disaster in Cleveland, Bill B. I think his mentor, Parcells took him back as a DC. What’s he up to these days?

  37. Only the Jets lol 😂!!! Woody Johnson saw the Broncos offense in 2022 and how dysfunctional and inept they were and thought to himself “I’ll take a piece of that. Woody told Saleh I better move fast to hire him before another owner out maneuvers me and makes another massive mistake/terrible hire before I can” 😂!!!!!

  38. Some guys are not head coach material after being good coordinators. Strangely, many come from the same franchise/HC Josh McDaniels, Matty P, Jim Schwartz, Eric Mangini, Bill O’brien, Brian Flores, Joe Judge … am I missing anyone? How does one very good NFL head coach litter the NFL with so many failed head coaches?

    —————————-
    How did they miss him when it came to red zone efficiency? He didn’t call plays. The Packers OL suffered numerous injuries and used 9 different configurations through the first nine games. How did the Broncos do having Hackett with their red zone efficiency?

  40. Peyton Manning made Adam Gase look like a genius. Aaron Rodgers did the same for Hackett. Dangerous hire without an elite QB.

  41. For a brief moment I was concerned about the Jets turning the corner after hiring Saleh. How foolish I was in that moment.

  42. Assuming the Hackett hire results in Rodgers being traded to the Jets, Hackett will be nothing more than a figurehead OC. Rodgers for the most part will check out of the plays and call his plays instead 9or call time out and give the play caller the “Rodgers stare”. Assuming last year’s thumb injury affected his play more than old age, the Jets would have a very solid game manager to go with the Jets defense. When healthy, he’s an accurate passer and very few interceptions. Don’t expect the 300+ yard games with 4 TD’s but an average, clean game that would get the Jets in the playoffs.

  43. This is a terrible choice. How on Earth do the Jets think this guy is a good coach at anything?Did he NOT just get let go DURING the season because he was so clueless? This is not funny its sad for the Jets fans. Nothing personal im sure hes a great dude but THIS is what they came up with? NOBODY else wanted the job i guess.

  44. All I can say is that the Hackett and Johnson families must be close. Jets fans had to suffer through his father as OC, and now they get the son, and he’s shown even less ability. Wow, the Jets…

  45. Add Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel to the list of Belicheck assistants who flopped as head coaches.

    Can’t be worse than what the pats had last year.
    _____________________________________________________
    Pats outscored Denver by a good margin last season. This guy has never lasted two seasons as a play caller. He is a good guy who people seem to really like. He is just a train wreck as a coach. “Sometimes I let emotions get in the way of calling the right plays…” NH
