Steelers kept Matt Canada so Kenny Pickett wouldn’t have to “start all over again”

USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers announced last week that Matt Canada would return as the team’s offensive coordinator for a third season.

Some outside the building had questioned his job security after the Steelers finished 23rd in yards and 26th in points. They had only 12 passing touchdowns and averaged only 4.2 yards per carry, below the league averages of 23 and 4.5.

But Steelers president Art Rooney II explained Thursday that the team wanted continuity for Kenny Pickett, who threw five touchdowns and only one interception after the Week 9 off week.

“They seemed to work well together,” Rooney said, via Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “With a new offensive coordinator, you’d start all over again. We felt there was enough there to build on.”

The Steelers went 7-2 down the stretch to finish 9-8, narrowly missing a postseason berth.

  1. I can appreciate wanting to have continuity, but that 7-2 finish wasn’t because of the offense. I saw several Steelers games this season as a result of the Chiefs playing so little at 1pm et and their games airing instead. It really looked like the OC was not doing this kid many favors. Play calls need to come in quicker to give the kid a chance to see what the defense is doing pre snap so he can make adjustments or audible.

  2. For all the Tomlin haters, if the Steelers can get Pickett to perform somewhat above average then they hit a home run on that draft pick

  3. I suppose I see the logic, but that decision doesn’t instantly make Matt Canada good at his job. Continuity may be a positive, but at what level? Is it 9-8 continuity? Is it 13-4 continuity? Today’s NFL favors the offense, so Matt Canada should be putting this offense in a position to rank top 10, especially with the quality of players at their disposal (o-line being the exception). If this offense doesn’t show marked improvement I hope coach-T has Canada’s pink slip ready by the halfway point of the season.

  4. Hey, imagine that – keeping your OC so that your QB doesn’t have to learn a new offense in his second year. So many teams shoot themselves in the foot with this. Mayfield had 4 OCs in his first 4 years. I think Sam Bradford had the same with the Rams back in the day.

  5. Bummer for Pickett. Nonsense excuse for not canning Canada. This will hold back Pickett’s progress going forward.

  6. Super smart. Pickett showed he can improve. He has a better chance to succeed with continuity

  7. The league average is 23 passing TDs, and the Steelers managed only 12. Keep the band together!

The 7-2 stretch run said much more about their defense and the quality of their opponents. You’re not going to win many games when you can’t muster 20 points.

  8. Continuity is great if it is with a good OC. If you don’t think he’s a good OC and you stick with him you end up like the 2022 Patriots.

  9. First if the Pats think their only problem is QB they are sorely mistaken. Steelers too. I am not crazy about the Steelers decision but I understand it. Pickett evolved and got better in spite of Canada and they have not yet let Pickett open up in the passing game yet. I believe that’s coming this season. No more rookie playbook, it’s time to open things up and keep helping out on his O line protection through the draft and free agency.

So the Eagles experience with Andy Reid taught you that? You really should be quiet.

    _____

Justin Herbert will have his 3rd OC in 4 years this coming season.

  12. Sure Pickett showed improvement. Over the last 8 games, Pickett threw 5 tds and 1 interception. Draw your own conclusions from those numbers. Personally, I’m more than underwhelmed. I’m speechless with frustration with this situation.

  13. Canada had 1 yr left on his contract, & Steelers never pay a guy for sitting at the beach. It’s going to be Groundhog Day when his offense is sputtering yet again next Oct w/ the Steelers mired in a 1-5 or 2-4 start.

  14. All this does is scream, “we are ok with being average or below”

If they wanted to be great, there would be tough conversations backed with “we are aspiring to win a Super Bowl”
