NFC Championship Game: 49ers lose Brock Purdy, trail Eagles 21-7 at halftime

Everything went against the 49ers in the first half.

They lost quarterback Brock Purdy on the team’s sixth offensive snap, and he has not returned with a right elbow injury. Linebacker Fred Warner and defensive end Nick Bosa both briefly have left the lineup.

Officials’ blown call on fourth down on the first series helped Philadelphia’s first touchdown drive, and three defensive penalties on the 49ers for 13 yards and three first downs helped the Eagles on their second touchdown drive.

The 49ers trail the Eagles 21-7 at halftime as Philadelphia scored 14 points in the final two minutes of the second quarter.

Philadelphia took a 14-7 lead with 1:36 remaining in the first half on a 13-yard touchdown run by Miles Sanders, his second touchdown of the game. His first covered 6 yards and came two plays after Jalen Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a 29-yard gain to the San Francisco 6 on fourth-and-three.

It originally appeared a tremendous one-handed catch, but Smith’s reaction to the Eagles to hurry up and snap it was a pretty good sign he didn’t catch it. Replays showed the ball hit the ground as he went to the ground, but Kyle Shanahan did not challenge.

The 49ers had a chance to go into the locker room down only one score and getting the second half kickoff, but backup quarterback Josh Johnson bobbled the shotgun snap. Haason Reddick recovered for the Eagles, the second lost fumble by 49ers’ quarterbacks, and three plays and 30 yards later, Boston Scott ran it in for 10 yards with 16 seconds left in the half.

Reddick has starred for the Eagles, and his hit on Purdy’s arm changed the complexion of the game. Reddick had a strip-sack, pinning Purdy’s arm and leaving him with a right elbow injury. Purdy tried to throw on the sideline but determined he couldn’t return.

Reddick has three tackles, two sacks, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble. Javon Hargrave has the team’s other sack and a pass breakup.

Hurts is 13-of-19 for 97 yards.

Purdy went 2-for-2 for 19 yards, and Johnson is 5-for-9 for 51 yards. Christian McCaffrey has seven carries for 55 yards, including a nifty 23-yard touchdown run.

  1. What did Shanahan do to deserve this bad luck?

Shame, defence playing well but pens killing them.

Eagles no excuses not to win this now..

  2. You get to your 4th QB of the season you either have a bad offensive scheme that exposes your QB, a bad OL or both. Would have rather seen the Seahawks or Cowboys over this embarrassment.

  3. Why is Huseey the referee? He’s horrible – totally clueless. He did the famous Giants commanders game.

  4. For one of the most popular professional sports leagues on the planet that makes a gazillion dollars every year the officiating is embarrassing. And if that weren’t a bad enough look, the home (philly) team being on the receiving end of all these bad calls truly exasperates the situation.

  5. Gronk is a HORRIBLE reader. Duh um I’m gronk. I’m getting paid to show you I’m dumb

  6. Maybe the backup QB should hold a football instead of a clipboard? The “vet” is completely lost out there.

  7. Let the crying from Santa Clara begin! You can say blown call all you want, Shanahan could’ve thrown the flag. I said right away, “if I were him(shanahan) I’d throw the flag there even if there’s a chance. The risk reward was a turnover or a probable TD (and eventual in reality). He could’ve called a timeout also, it’s worth the timeout also if he didn’t want to risk the challenge without confirmation.

  8. Tainted game at this point. I’m sure eagles will beat their chest about beating a team with no qb. It is what it is.

  9. The Eagles need to give the Refs a game ball. With our QB3 injured and our emergency QB playing, the Real Superbowl will be played tonight between the Bengals and Chiefs. The Eagles don’t stand a chance unless they bring this referee crew with them to give them hidden yardage and the other team multiple back breaking penalties.

Niners have to keep running the ball. Johnston is rattled and needs to settle …

    Too late. 9ers are toast.

  13. Win / win at this point.

Eagles win because, well, they’re winning.

Niners and their fans winning because now they have an excuse for losing – something they look for every year.

What’s the alternative? Come back next week and play again? You play the team thats on the schedule and on the field.

  17. When the “The Genius” has no players his carriage turns into a pumpkin. Like Belichick often says it’s about the players, the coaches role is much less important.

Feels weird agreeing with you but you are correct. I honestly didn’t see San Fran even having a chance with Purdy in the game. He’s never faced a pass rush quite like this.

  19. It will be interesting to see how Philly makes out when they have to play against a first string QB, does anyone remember a team getting gifted a Super Bowl slot like this???

    Mmm…toast

  21. There’s absolutely nothing impressive about Hurts. The Eagles won’t beat either Cincinnati or KC.

  22. Refs are really letting the cat out of the bag. How about holding on Egals OLine? Greg Olsen is getting on my last nerve.

  23. What rotten luck. This could have been one of the best games of the season, and finally a real measuring-stick test for Philadelphia. Instead we all get ripped off by bad luck.

  24. I don’t blame the refs for influencing the outcome in this one. No one wants to see a team with their 4th string in the superbowl.

  25. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles, their fans, and the referees! They all worked together to defeat the San Francisco 49ers. I hope the referees can help out the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

  26. Eagles coach is as dumb as Kyle choke Shanahan. You’re up 14 at home with a quarter to go and with the other team into their hurt 3rd string QB so let’s go ahead and run your hurt QB four times in a row.

  27. What did Shanahan do to deserve this bad luck?

He’s very similar to his father. Leads the league in whining every year. Wears that ball cap to hide the veins in his forehead that are ready to burst when he harangues the zebras.

  28. I have no dog in this fight. But after watching this game if you don’t think the NFL is rigged, I have a toy factory in the north pole I’d like to sell to you.

  29. Cry for me, niners nation, let me see those tears!

  30. This reminds me of the college national championship game.

It’s too bad when a team somehow gets in who shouldn’t have.

Makes the game too one sided.

    ________________

A lot of sore luck losers in this thread. Hey, the QB got injured. It happens! You guys are funny. No sympathy for QBs you dislike when they get hurt. Hurts not impressive? He’s an MVP finalist and his team is running away with this game. What more do you want? Geez.

  33. Luck aside, it’s a team game, and the next man up at QB made a crucial fumble which changed the outcome of the game. Also, SF did poorly not to challenge that catch. Will people be saying the same thing if Burrow/Mahomes were to get hurt in the Super Bowl vs PHI? The game isn’t all about the QB.

  34. …but it’s 28-7! Hahaha! Nobody gives a damn what it “should” be, cry baby. Instead of blaming the refs, why don’t you watch the game & hold the players responsible? Every flag has been legit. Niners clutch & grab on almost every drop back, that’s not the refs fault but I guess it’s easier to blame them than acknowledge the better team is kicking their arse. The DL is ripping their OL to pieces which is why the QBs are getting demolished

    Should be 14 to 7

  35. Worst championship game ever! Worst play calling (Shanahan injuring his third QB), worst refereeing (missed drop on fourth down, punt hits something without any ref realizing it, a whole Eagles drive made up of one-sided penalty calls), 38 QB sneaks by the winning team because their QB can‘t throw the ball either anymore (I thought Joe Judge was still in New England, but someone in Philly must have stolen his Giants playbook). At least Philadelphia fans have a blast. Thank God this game is not a neutral site game, because the stands would have emptied by the fourth quarter.

  39. The Eagles are acting like they are something special beating a team without a functioning QB.I hope whoever represents the AFC beats the snot out of them

  40. God Almighty the officiating in this game has been awful. The roughing the punter penalty was they cherry on top of a banner day for this crew.

What’s worse is seeing the League official handles online touting the Eagle’s plays like North Korean state media. This has been an awful game, marred by some of the worst officiating in a title game in years. Shanahan might need a straight jacket and tranquilizers for the flight home.

“going after arms intentionally”……ya, sure, that is what the Eagles are doing……

  42. Thai game was over in the 2nd quarter…also. LEAST entertaining game of the playoffs. First 4 Eagles drives aided by penalties. Legit or not, some of those calls can be called on every plays. Boring stuff if you’re not an Eagles fan.

  46. Purdy quit on his team…I guess there goes the feel good stories. And he wasn’t that injured, he’s fine…he was just scared. Also, all the grabbing SF did against Dallas didn’t work this week..

  47. We’ll never know if this Niners squad could’ve pulled it off if it weren’t for injuries. They are a good team though. Lost their top two QBs early in the season and they still made the NFC championship game.

  48. Just a friendly reminder that the 49ers had not beaten a top tier team this season.
In their only major test this season they were blown out by KC.
    Its happening again today.

  49. Expect Brady in SF. Calls are calls. Niners frustrated and immature. Contracts are coming due and draft picks shortage.

  54. Just a friendly reminder that Mortimer’s team was blown out by the 49ers both in the Super Bowl and again this season, with a third string QB.

  56. What a horrible decision by Shanahan to a backup TE to block the Eagles best defensive lineman on the play Purdy was on hurt. And the guy has not been back in the game since.

  57. As a fan of neither team, would rather see a game with teams at full strength. And a gift td to Philly on a clearly dropped pass the league should have overturned. Philly has nothing to apologize for but feels like a default win.
