Key play included a missed holding penalty by Orlando Brown

The late hit that gave the Chiefs 15 extra yards and a 45-yard game-winning field goal try came at the end of a play that began with something that has happened over and over in 2022.

Offensive holding. Not called.

Chiefs tackle Orlando Brown clearly held Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson. No flag was thrown.

It happens too often to be brushed off as gross incompetence. Between consistent failures to call holding and a rash of tackles starting into their pass-block set a split second before the snap without being called for illegal procedure, officials are making it easier for quarterbacks to operate by balancing out the simple fact that, currently, defensive linemen are bigger, faster, and/or stronger than the men trying to stop them from hitting the quarterback.

Remember the outcry over roughing the passer from October? NFL executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent candidly admitted that the officials overprotect quarterbacks because, without healthy quarterbacks, the games stink.

So, in addition to calling ticky-tack roughing penalties when quarterbacks get hit, the officials are looking the other way far too often on tactics that help keep quarterbacks from getting hit.

It’s why Joey Bosa blew a gasket two weeks ago. It happens over and over again.

In this instance, it should have been called.

  1. Hey Bengals fans, If Mahomes had Ja”marr Chase, Tyler Boyd, and Tee Higgins he would have scored 50 on you!

  2. Don’t forget the missed block in the back on the punt return that gave the Chiefs good field position. Also, extra 3rd down, Burrow hit late near his own end zone on the next drive with no roughing called, Perine clearly in the area on the intentional grounding called on Burrow, hands to Scharping’s face on the intentional grounding, Burrow getting hit late with body weight on top of him, Bengals getting bad spots and Chiefs getting great spots all game, the absolutely terrible DPI called on Hilton, and a few seconds added to the clock for the Chiefs on the last drive. Plus, the constant holding by Chiefs all night.

  3. Billion dollar industry and arguably the most important people on the field are part-time employees, but neutral site conference championship games are a possibility. Makes sense.

  4. They didn’t seem to have any trouble calling holding on the Bengals, I noticed.

When there are so many bad calls and most of them favor one side, it’s a bad look. Very poor officiating today, across both games.

I said in comments here the other day that I just hope we have no QB injuries and the officials don’t decide the game. A rough day in both respects.

  5. Officiating was horrible in both games

Obvious block in back in front of ref on KC punt return that setup winning drive. Cincinnati special teams coach was livid

NFL refs losing credibility by the week

  6. There was blatant holding on many plays. The ones that get called are when the dlineman beat their man enough to force the call.

The questionable intentional grounding has a hold that very possibly prevents a strip sack.

The pi that overturned the interception and was a 6-10 point swing. Missed holding there.

  7. Gambling is the reason for incompetence of the Refs. Money talks BS walks. Both games the officials were awful. But the NFL created this monster when it went to bed with openly embracing Gambling. The fleas comes with it, incompetence officiating. You haven’t seen nothing yet, wait for the Super Bowl, it’s going to be a blast.

  8. The 49ers were offensive holding on most plays I saw today and not called.. just imagine it could of been even worse had they called it all. Then we go to the chiefs game where the refs were calling ticky tack fouls to manipulate the game

  9. Of course, Park Avenue and Vegas didn’t want Eagles vs Cincinnati. What about the missed late hit by Clark on Burrow in the end zone earlier in the 4th quarter? Brady, Rodgers and Pattycakes get that call every time, I’m surprised Cinci didn’t get flagged for tackling Mahomes.

  10. How about the pass By Mahomes on the 2nd down on the last drive? That pass was not within 10 yards of anyone, he was under duress, and he never left the pocket. That should have been intentional grounding.

  11. The officiating wasn’t bad in both games but the league should be concerned.

Who decides they pause play to check for intentional grounding vs whether or not a player made a catch when the official making the call is doing so with an obstructed view? That happened in 49er game. It would have been a turnover on downs if the officials had been empowered to do the right thing instead of putting coaches in position to roll the dice.

  12. This season really made me rethink about watching the NFL in the future. It’s blatantly becoming obvious at this point in terms of how the refs have treated every game.

  13. Missed holding call there, missed holding call on the punt return, missed roughing the passer call on Burrow.

Not to mention what happened prior to all that.

It was a 1 sided officiating beat down the likes which hasn’t been seen since the ‘72 Olympics basketball

  14. Nothing new here. I would bet that non-calls of holding happens in Q4 with far more frequency in playoff games than regular season, and at least half of all plays in any SB of the past 30 years.

  15. Mahomes is looking to tie Brady for the All time record on Suspect Championships this year.

Mahomes is the greatest player on earth. don’t get me wrong. Buuutt that also doesnt mean the refs haven’t done everything they have done to give it to Mahomes at the end of those seasons.

  16. As a Raiders fan of 35+ years, I’m used to seeing egregious calls by the refs quite often. Phantom holding or pass interference, or lack of holding calls, specifically against Maxx Crosby these last few years. But the Raiders have mostly sucked, and most people don’t pay attention. I can’t say I’ve seen too many AFC Championship games where it was so blatantly obvious that the game was fixed, and the NFL did all they could to get the team to the SUPER BOWL that THEY wanted.

Granted, that was an incredibly dumb play for the late hit, but leading up to that was just far too many questionable calls/no calls, an extra play and clear favoritism for the Chiefs. It’s like the NFL doesn’t even try to hide it anymore, that they rig the games towards who they want to win. And I’m not saying this because I’m a Raiders fan and am salty against the Chiefs, I’m not. It’s not the Chiefs, it’s the NFL.

I’ve seen this in other games with other teams too, just not usually so blatant and while on the big stage. I’m seriously considering not watching the Super Bowl this year, for the first time in 35+ years. The NFL is more corrupt than ever, and they will not change unless people stop watching and they start losing money. I for one am ready for that change.

  17. It’s simple.. Professional football is no longer a sport.. It’s entertainment.

    IT’S ENTERTAINMENT….!

If more penalties are called, like they should be, then the game becomes less entertaining. As Peter King pointed out, the officials don’t want to call fouls because it slows down the game and makes the game less entertaining. The downstream result is there will be non-call on plays that decide or heavily influence the outcome of a game.

  18. Of course they did the whole world saw it. The NFL is clearly rigged. I guess the Chiefs would make a lot more money than the Bengals in the SuperBowl. They even gave the Chiefs the first seed, which they should not have had.

  19. It was a terrible hold by Brown. the same thing happened when the left tackle for Cincinnati had a flagrant hold on Frank Clark when Tee Higgins caught his TD pass. The refs are pathetic.

  20. Trash officiating on both games. There needs to be a better solution to refereeing, maybe eye-in-the-sky + New York or something. This felt like an absolutely wasted day watching football.

  21. There’s four classes of teams in the NFL:

    1) Your Legacy teams – These are teams like the Packers and Steelers that have long histories, have huge fan bases and kind of propagate the collegiate atmosphere, folksie feeling of the NFL.

    2) Your current flavor teams – These are teams the media loves, the ones with hot QB’s or coaching hires that are usually tabbed for success or have those stroylines that everyone is in love with – Your Mahommes/Chiefs, your Allen/Bills, etc, historically the post-Katrina Saints etc.

    3) Big Market Teams with large fan bases (Large market teams without large fan bases generally don’t count) – Cowboys, San Fran, Denver.

    4) The there are your small market teams – MN, Cinci, Indy, Jags…

Who gets the call follows this hierarchy, ESPECIALLY in the playoffs. I don’t think it’s a conspiracy, I just think this is the way the refs brains unconsciously evaluate the close plays and/or the crucial ones.

  22. Andrew Wylie holds almost every play unless it’s a blatant tackle he’s rarely called for it. So them missing a call on Brown doesn’t surprise me.

  23. I use to have the DirecTV Sunday Ticket etc etc.

I haven’t watched a whole game in years now. I might watch highlights or a recap on YouTube.

I still read articles and listen to Podcasts about the NFL. But the refs make it unwatchable. The Refs make me feel foolish getting emotionally invested in this game now.

I don’t think its rigged for outcome. But I think a bad ref call can end a season. Remember that one time when the Rams made the Super Bowl because that CB tackled the Saints player before the ball got there?

The outcomes seem like WWE stuff now. The NFL will not miss me, and I don’t miss the NFL. I go out of my way to not financially support it.

  24. And the last time a team got an extra 3rd down due to a clock was….yea not in my lifetime. The PI call same drive was garbage…and it goes on and on.
The personal foul at the end saved the refs from being hammered.

  25. No dog in fight but that was a ridiculous missed hold that was so blatant that I yelled holding at tv.

  26. Like it or not, there is holding or illegal hands to the face etc somewhere on most every play somewhere on the field, offense or defense…just because it doesn’t show on the TV broadcast or replay between plays doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.
At the speed, viewing angles etc, I will say it’s very tough for refs to catch everything.

  27. Yeah and no calls on OPI and phantom catching on fourth down.

The league always gets who they want in the game

  28. great article, glad someone in the media had the cojones to say it – I’ve been watching holding all season and the amount of big plays that come from it far outweigh the ones that don’t and often those missed holding calls control the outcome of the game. It almost seems like Nationally there’s a League of people that want to control the outcome of football games while fooling the rubes.

  29. It does happen over and over again, especially during Chiefs games. The NFL needs to just openly admit they are pushing Mahommes as the top player and this will continue skewing games in KC’s favor.

  30. My goodness Mike, we already have enough tinfoil hat conspiracy nuts out there claiming that the league rigs games. There is no need to further feed these morons.

The truth is that holding has been lightly called for decades. And OTs are not starting a half second early on every play. Nothing changed mid season.

  31. So tired of games being decided by non-calls. Of course the winning team didn’t see a thing, and won’t admit to anything. The losing team gets ignored or look like sore losers. The incomplete pass ruled a completion that led to the Chief’s first TD changed the game, too. The rule that let the Chiefs hurry and make a play before the call could be challengedI is ridiculous imo. I’d be furious if I were a Bengals fan.

  32. And then there were the two blocks in the back on the kick off, returns and proceeded this. It really appears that Ron Torbert’s team wanted the Chiefs to win. They were the real heroes for KC.

  33. It was so obvious. They should have thrown the flag. The league wanted Kansas City to win. They had their finger on the scale. I don’t like either team here but the league has a real problem

  34. Let’s discuss all those times Chris Jones was held which prevented him from racking up 10 more sacks vs Broadway Joe, Mike.

  35. No dog in this fight but that non-call was right in front of the referee.
Also the disparity in calls made (in the fourth quarter especially), heavily favored the Chiefs.

  36. It’s kind of refreshing to seem someone with a “voice” authenticate what most fans are already thinking. It’s not gross incompetence, it’s blatant favoritism bordering on downright cheating,

  37. I’m not going to go so far as to say blown calls cost Cincinnati the game because they still had plenty of opportunity but Trey Hendrickson gets held almost every single play and it’s been like that since last season

  38. If the last two weeks have shown anything, it’s that the Chiefs have the refs on their side. Both games were officiated in favor of Kansas City. You know it’s bad when neutral fans see it so obviously.

  39. The Bengals screwed up the NFL’s neutral site game by dominating the Bills last week and the league was going to make sure they paid for it.

  40. As a Bengal fan it sucks but i`ve been one for 49 years so i expected it. Just like i bet big on the Rams in the Super Bowl because after the St Louis lawsuit it was much better for the business of the NFL for super rich Stan Kroenke and the “NEW” Los Angeles Rams to win than Mike Brown i knew after Zac Taylor “apologized” for messing up the NFL plans what would happen so at least my car payment was free for February. If anyone really believes they “missed” a holding penalty that lasted 5 seconds then you deserve the 2 weeks of Andy Reid vs Philadelphia hype the NFL is about to spoon feed you.

  41. Yeah this play and many others … once the Chiefs were given a never scene since the 1972 Olympics REDO on a failed play which was followed by a very weak PI call that gave KC 4 more downs it was obvious how this game was supposed to end. The officials were going to keep finding ways to aid the home team. The Bengals to their credit kept over coming, but in the end they bailed the league out with a what appeared to be a true late hit out of bounds with an added LeBronian flop by Mahomes for good measure. It appeared to me at least to be the most obvious yet of what the majority of viewers call “rigged” on every social media platform going.

  42. And official’s didn’t call the obvious block in the back on Sam Hubbard’s fumble return for a touchdown against the Ravens. Some calls you get, some you don’t.

  43. The Bengals were outgained in 6 of their 7 playoff games the past two years, including against Derek Carr, Ryan Tannehill, and Tyler Huntley. They lucked their way into 4-2 in those games. For reference, all other teams that were outgained went 1-17. So forgive me if I’m not weeping they didn’t catch a break for the first time in 2 years.

  44. Remember the outcry over roughing the passer from October? NFL executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent candidly admitted that the officials overprotect quarterbacks because, without healthy quarterbacks, the games stink.

    ============================================================================

So what you’re saying is that the games are fixed…………..

  45. I’m not a fan of either of these teams, just an observer. It seemed to me like holding certainly was called a few times, just never on the Chiefs. Some were pretty blatant for sure, but still, as always, refs could call holding on every play in every game if they wanted. Did the Chiefs get flagged for one penalty in the entire second half? It sure felt like the flags were all going against Cincinnati. While refs can’t decide a game, they can surely influence the outcome. Feels like they do sometimes, and last night was one of those times.

  46. And the refs didn’t call a clear as day block in the back on Andrews during Hubbard’s fumble return for a TD two weeks ago, they were happy to just let the Bengals take all of the momentum. These things always seems to even out at the end.

  47. The best team won and the Chiefs were clearly the better team start to finish , good and bad calls go both ways that’s the human element of sports.

  48. Yeah, the officiating was ridiculously one sided. Almost like the NFL wanted the Chiefs to win.

  49. I agree. I hate how the league likes 35-42 games. Give me a 10-7 game any time! That is real football!
There is so much offensive holding not called it is a crime. Why are they so prejudiced towards offense. Defense, defense defense!

  50. Burrows was sacked 4 or 5 times. On one of those sacks the guy making the sack hit Burrows in the face and pushed his head back before rapping him up. On another sack after been taken down the defender dropped his whole-body weight on Burrows with no call. The refs are controlling the outcome of these games with no calls. With billions of dollars being bet on football, this doesn’t look good. And for the record, I didn’t care who won the game, I just wanted to see a good one. The officials ruined that.

  51. There are always plenty of non calls on both sides in playoff games. The refs feel the pressure too. Joey Bosa acted like a spoiled brat who just cant have his own way. It was the fouls drawn by his tantrums that did the most damage to the chargers. Life’s Not Fair Sonny boy, and as Kelsey put it after the game: “Burrowfield My Ass!”…

  52. Ron Torbert’s crew getting that game tells us everything you need to know. The fact they blew multiple calls isn’t a surprise, terrible crew.

  53. Key play? Hey the game I saw the Chiefs d made most of the key plays. Where did the the Bungels O line go. They lost the game. 4 sacks in like the first 5 minutes, really. One team came to play and one pretended to play. It was only a matter of time before the Chiefs took over and won the game. Burrows had no chance.

  54. The Benglas were hosed by the refs on at least 3-4 BS calls. It was crazy how bad the calls against them were. Fix was in.

  55. NFL refs are a lot like NBA refs in that they generally give the home team beneficial calls and non-calls. I’m sure a psychologist could explain why. Non-calls don’t bother me, inconsistencies do.

It’s not fair, but the bengals, like most teams—had opportunities to win the game on their own and they failed.

  56. Refs aren’t trying to protect the QBs, in the last game against the Jags the NFL fined DL Khalen Saunders for a roughing the passer hit on Lawrence but no penalty was even called…the refs have an agenda and use penalties to determine who wins the games…

  57. The amount times the bengals LT moved before the snap was laughable. I don’t understand how the NFL just lets things go. Why are these things not automatically reviewed?

The DeVonta Smith non-catch in the NFC game was a huge play and play should have been immediately stopped for a quick booth review. One quick look at the right angle and play could commence in less than two minutes. I don’t get it.

  58. What a shock! It was obvious the entire game they were doing whatever it took to make sure Kansas City won the game.

  59. Holding, illegal procedure, & illegal formation does not appear to be called for O tackles as much versus prior years. Appears the tackles are far behind the guards prior to ball snap.

Guessing league is sacrificing defense for scoring & “big plays”.

  60. Not a fan of either outcome, neutral fan but officiating was pretty bad in both games yesterday. I like to think I won’t watch the Super Bowl in a few weeks but I likely will.

  61. Meh, and they got this far benefiting from a missed block in the back on the key play in the wild card. Sometimes you get the call and sometimes you don’t.

  62. The NFL is scripted just like the WWE, only difference is the WWE admits its scripted where the NFL acts like it isn’t, but it is.

  63. No holding call was warranted on that play. You are allowed to grab a defender’s jersey if he’s in front of you. Once the defender disengaged and started chasing Mahomes, Brown let go.

  64. If they aren’t going to call it take it out of the rule book. Otherwise, it leads to speculation that the games are fixed when holding is called randomly.

  65. Missing a holding call happens.
Of course there’s also the missed hands to the face by Chris Jones on that supposed intentional grounding that was called late. Or the second hands to the face by Jones that happened later in that drive. Or the pass interference call on Mike Hilton that wasn’t, especially in comparison how that penalty was not being called when the Chiefs were on defence. And then there’s the do over the refs gave KC…
Missing calls that exclusively happen to only one team fuels the conspiratorial mindset. And though I just think more often than not the refs are just incompetent, last night’s game was making me search for some tinfoil and the latest headwear fashion.

  66. “Let them play.” Unless letting them play starts interfering with the narrative of a desired outcome.

  67. It looked like the tackle got his hands inside and kept his man in front of him. That could be called on every play so I am glad the refs didn’t call a ticky tack penalty in such a key situation.

  68. #NFLrigged was trending for a few hours last night. I’m not sure the league cares, but it does seem like a lot of non-bengals fans felt like the Bengals got hosed. This Bengals fan thinks Burrow should have done more with that last offensive possession, but nice to see some support from other NFL fans. Where were you guys on the Logan Wilson holding penalty in the SB?

  69. Bengals can’t win with Ron Torbert officiating crew. Can teams put in requests to not have certain crews officiate their games?

  70. “Offensive holding is not called”….I think if you were to re-watch this game or any other game under a microscope you could probably find at least 2 penalties being committed on every play of a game. And I know this particular play might have led to the “winning kick”…but every point scored ….every first down made led up to the “winning kick”. There is a solution and that would be to review every play, this would make a game about 7 hours long and about exciting as baseball.

  71. The personal foul against Mahomes resulting in the winning FG was once again proof that many defensive players are simply not intelligent enough to keep their emotions in check.he knew they were clearly out of bounds yet he could not stop his temptation to shove the qb into the bench costing his team the possible OT win had it lasted a few more seconds in regulation.he has all of eight months now to ponder his mistake and wonder if his team will forgive him for losing their SB money.

  72. There were bad or no calls all over the place on both teams. How about the lame holding call on the Chiefs which took a TD off the board in the first quarter? You can’t dispute the fact that the Bangals gave up 5 sacks and had 3 turn overs. That is the main reason the Bangals lost.

  73. Are we just pointing out the penalties that the Chiefs committed that weren’t called or are we pointing out the ones the Bengals committed that weren’t called? Or are you claiming the Bengals never committed a penalty that wasn’t called.

  74. They really should have just flipped a coin to decide if it was a late hit on that crucial drive…

  75. I am really surprised at the level of bad play – or bad plays – in the NFL this year. This ridiculous late hit in the AFC game, the lateral turned INT in the NE-Raiders game, another game where the DL knocked the ball from the QBs hand – after a key sack, triggering a unsportsmanlike call, extending a drive and them losing the game, to countless 2 minute drills where players turned upfield AT THE SIDELINE, rather than run out of bounds.
What gives? Is the league being dumbed down? Suffering from CTE?

  76. There are probably a dozen or more missed holding calls, on both teams, during each and every NFL game. To cherry pick this one and point it out as some sort of turning point is akin to blaming the refs for wearing the other teams colors every time your team loses. No one play determines a game. Maybe they should have not gave up 6 sacks and 2 ints and this one missed call would never have mattered. Goodness gracious why is it so hard to just say “good game”, see you next year and show respect that both teams were excellent this year? Why does there always have to be something to “blame” instead of praise? NFL fans need to be better.

  77. not a dog in the fight but you could clearly tell towards the end of the game who the refs were playing for….

  78. Most Fixed Game I have seen in years! NFL should be disgusted….We all know Cincy got screwed

  79. Missing the illegal block on the last punt return was worse.
The NFL should not assemble crews that never work together for postseason games.

  80. The officiating was suspect in both CGs. It will simply be swept under the rug.

One day there will be a major scandal in the NFL, much bigger than Donaghy in the NBA, and it will be unavoidable.

  81. Had no dog in either fight this weekend, but the officials were far too present in both games. Every play was impacted, or not, by an official. A flag that was thrown, or not thrown. A whistle blown, or not blown–a replay that should have been, that wasn’t, an expedited review that wasn’t or was…. Embarrassing.

  82. Worst playoff game I have seen with calls on one team but not the other, the Line judge needs to be fired! Lose count of the number of missed holding calls on the Chiefs but yet Bengal were flagged for the same holds, the PI on Hilton was a joke along with the IG on Borrow with Perine 5 yards from the ball. All this talk lately about the NFl being rigged then ref crew back that up 100%

  83. “Holding can be called on almost every play” …That’s the comment I have heard every year but now this play? I agree with that false start stuff but we have been told that unless it is blatant, don’t call holding. The “whistle “ on third down with around 10 minutes to go? That is where your story is.

  84. The officiating makes the game hard to watch. These are 1 game playoffs and easy to manipulate with missed calls. Other sports are insulated from this to a degree- by playing multiple games with different refs.
They should reduce penalty eligibility to fouls that intend to injure / player safety or cause a competitive imbalance. Holding in the tackle box should be allowed – tackling should not. How many 1:1 matchups end with a receiver flopping instead of trying to make a catch. I saw a 5 yd pentalty for illegally touching a a dead ball after a punt the refs were going to pick up. Holding on fair catches – dumb. Missing obvious dropped passes … it goes on and on.

The most annoying thing though… is how these games set narratives on who the best players are. The refs play way to large of a role in these games. The league needs to keep a penalty stat to show how much benefit a team received from penalties.

  85. It certainly felt like the officials were doing everything they could to give KC that game.

If the NFL has any integrity, they’ll own up to the mistakes and make changes.

    They don’t, so they won’t.

    Plausible Deniability

  86. Seeing the blatant offensive holding going on all the time makes the games hard to watch. I bet coaches just tell the guys to go ahead and hold until they can gauge whether and to what extent the officials in a particular game will call it.

  87. Not a fan of either team, but pretty obvious the refs/NFL really wanted KC in the Super Bowl. Almost every penalty was on a few 3rd down and the play that was played twice was just over the top.

  88. They got the team in they wanted.

Bengals had their opportunities, but hard when you have to overcome the refs/ But, used to it.

They weren’t protecting Burrow though. Several instances where roughing could have been called including landing full weight on QB.

KC had 0 penalties in the second half.

  89. Not worth debating. It was pretty apparent early in the game that the Bengals wouldn’t be getting any favourable calls from the refs.

Only a matter of time before the NFL has it’s Tim Donaghy moment.

    ——-

Or it’s Bret Hart/Montreal Screwjob moment. Or both.

  91. This is why I would never place a bet on an NFL game. The officiating ends up affecting who wins far too often. My brother is convinced that the league wants certain teams to win, a belief that started with the “no-call” between the Rams and Saints a few years ago when the Rams had just moved back to LA and were trying to build a following. It’s all about the Benjamins.

  92. Not a fan of either team. But the refs changed the outcome of that game multiple times with questionable calls. But I must say I’m excited to see the refs advance to the Super Bowl.

  93. It’s hard to overcome the Refs. It doesn’t matter how good you are.
Nothing against the Chiefs and the fans. Just ticked off at the men in stripes

  94. My brother wanted KC to win and guaranteed me that they would. His comment: Cincinnati is a small market team. KC has a national following. Who do you think will win?” He said this before the kickoff.

  95. No dog in the fight here. Refs called obvious calls evenly but it seemed like anything close went against Cincy.

  96. A game of this magnitude should not be decided by numerous bad calls/no call by the officials. Unbelievably bad ending…

  97. The Bengals o-line was holding all night. If they hadn’t, the Chiefs would have had 10 sacks.

The Chiefs had a TD called back by penalty, and one that should have been a TD based on how Smith’s catch was called in the SF/Philly game. They also had a ridiculous taunting penalty on Wylie that essentially ended a drive after a big gain by MVS. Oh, and Jamar Chase still pushes off literally every single play.

The officiating in the game was bad, no question. However, stop acting like the Chiefs were handed the game. They had just as many calls go against them. It was a terrific effort by their defense and Mahomes threw for 330 yards and 2 TD on one leg.

There’s a very simple solution if you think the league is rigging games; stop watching. I don’t see why you all keep whining and coming here wasting your time commenting if it’s all fixed anyway. Would like to see any single person on this board try to ref an NFL game. Now that would be hilarious.

  98. Every team is a victim of bad calls and the benefactor of good calls in a game. At the end of the day the refs are an obstacle for any team. just like weather, luck, and noise. winners find a way to win and losers always have an excuse.

  99. It is amazing how it always comes down to missed calls. I assume that is why Burrow was sacked five times and threw two interceptions.

If this is so rigged, then please tell me why Cincy won last year? You all sound ridiculous. Bad calls went both ways as we’ve seen in countless games. Get over it.

  101. There’s a rumor that Andy Reid will retire after this season. If that’s the case, what a way to send him out. Maybe the NFL wants him to ride off into the sunset, just like Peyton Manning a few years back. Who knows? lets see how this plays out.

  102. this entire discussion is ridicules i.e. there are ‘no calls’ on every play, in every game in every season of the NFL. Stop the whining, it’s over and nothing can change it.

  103. The Chiefs knew they had to protect Mahomes or the game was lost.

So their linemen held, all game. Rather put the onus on the officials than risk getting Mahomes further injured.

Sure enough, the Officials didn’t call the holding infractions against the Chiefs.

Certainly feels like the NFL had decided they wanted KC and not Cincy playing against the Eagles.

  104. The bottom line is that officiating marred both contests. This was one of the worst Conference Championship weekends in memory.

  105. The game was being played 19 vs 11 and the Chiefs still only managed a 3 point win. Eagles my advice is get a really big lead or you’ll be next. NFL do a poll maybe you’ll find out your golden boy isn’t as well liked as you think he is.

  106. Goodell just continues to be corrupt in front of everyone, manipulating games. What a horrible product.

People are now more in tune with looking to when and where the cheating will come as opposed to enjoying a good game.

    Horrible product.

  107. It would be nice if the refs were required to give press conferences after each game so they would be forced to answer for their performances. Let them have to explain why they did, or didn’t, make certain calls.

  108. Obviously Chiefs fans are going to say they missed calls on both sides and clearly they do every game but most neutral fans saw what happened. That holding call wasn`t near as bad as the blatant missed call on block in the back on the punt return that set up the last drive. There is video proof of at least 5 “missed” calls that went the Chiefs way in the last quarter. They weren`t called for 1 penalty in the 2nd half. So people can say Ossai messed up and he did, They can say the Bengals still had their chances and they did, But whether it was because their corrupt or just inept the NFL decided who won that game not the players on the field and that is a shame but not a surprise.

  109. Would the NFL please choose the best officiating teams through the year to do the playoffs. It makes no sense that people who have worked together all season get broken up in the playoffs. If you are going to do that, at least let them work weeks 16 and 17 together. It just makes no sense to me why you would do this as it seems every year we go through this.

And yes, these are multi-billion dollar teams with multi-million dollar players and clearly people are betting multi-millions if not billions on the sport (at least based on the adds) so let’s get pro, full time refs in there and quit the happy horse bleep of part timers.

  110. romeisfallingagain says:

The officiating in the game was bad, no question. However, stop acting like the Chiefs were handed the game. They had just as many calls go against them
    ——————————————————————————————————————————————————
Not true! The Chiefs did not have 1 single penalty the 2nd half. You can go online now and see video proof of 5 missed calls that went against the Bengals in the last 10 minutes of the game alone. Your going to the Super Bowl and you didn`t do anything wrong so be happy and celebrate it but don`t act like it was determined by the players and not the refs because the blatant block in the back on the punt return kept the game from OT alone.

  111. The KC Cincy game was one of the worst officiated games that I have had the misfortune of watching. It goes beyond incompetence and well into rigged territory. Andy Reid vs Philly. Two black QBs for the first time in a superbowl, imagine all the oppression stories the networks can cover. I have tried for years to explain away to myself the officiating blunders, but no longer. I stopped watching superbowl half time shows after the wardrobe incident. I will take one step further and skip the superbowl altogether this time.

  112. If we sat down and reviewed every single play of that game (or any other for that matter), I’m betting you could find holding on virtually every play as well as numerous other violations that weren’t called. Are we going to have eight hour games with a penalty called every play? You can’t control the weather, the bounce of the football or judgement calls/non-calls by the officials, all you can do is overcome them. Good teams overcome these things and bad teams don’t.

  113. If the league only wants the Chiefs to win, then how did Cincy make it to the SB last year, geniuses?

  114. Back when mastodons roamed the earth, I was a huge fan of the Joe Gibbs Redskins. The 1983 NFC Championship was a classic between the Niners and Redskins – Skins going for two in a row, the Niners not quite yet a dynasty (won one in ’81, and still before Jerry Rice). Madden and Summerall in their primes. Skins led 21-0 into the 4th, then Montana launches three missiles (long TDs) late to tie the game. About three minutes to go, an absolute phantom holding call on Ronnie Lott gives the Skins a critical first down – they kick the FG very late to win 24-21. Montana still says it was his toughest loss.

Point being – while bad officiating has always been a factor and a problem in big games, the move toward WWE-style ‘personalities’ and entertainment, combined with the money in legalized gambling and the refusal of the NFL to have full-time officials and all the latest technology (chip in the ball to detect TDs, first downs, etc), is going to eventually drive more and more fans away from the game. But before it does, or unless we get younger owners who refuse to treat it like a carny show, like Jerry Jones does, the problem will still be here for years

  115. Officiating is a tough job. You have to remember the over/under and the point spread and which team is paying you. Then you have to basically guess who is paying the other officials.

  116. Officiating should be consistent, not accurate.
If this is the way they have been calling it all year long as is implied, you can’t change the rules now. Some holding is legal.

  117. Payback on bengals for the non call block in the back on mandrews, where bengals most likely only get a fg where ravens easily tie for OT

  118. “and a rash of tackles starting into their pass-block set a split second before the snap without being called for illegal procedure,”

Interesting you say that because, and I’m saying this as an Eagles fan, not a sore loser Niner fan, but I thought Lane Johnson moved early at least ten times yesterday and was never called

  119. The fact that Ron Torbert and his crew were picked to do the AFC Championship is a joke. When are the ref’s going to be held accountable for blown calls? Fine them for blown calls and maybe the quality would improve.

  120. The officiating was terrible in both games. Poor penalty calls. Bad judgements. Horrible game management and procedural admin. NY could have helped but chose not to. Left a sour taste. I don’t think anyone has mentioned Pacheco spearing on his late run and dinging himself in the process. Arguably the worst day of officiating in such a high profile spot.

Made no difference in the NFC as that was all on Shanahan throwing in the towel rather than playing CMC at wildcat. In the AFC it may have been enough to make the difference.

  121. Horrible officiating in favor if the chiefs. Anyone with any knowledge of the game saw it last night, disgusting. I felt like the reporter in 8 men out, I told my wife to write down any calls or missed calls that seemed bad and helped KC after the game we swapped and we both had basically the same things written down, way too many calls that helped KC prolong drives along with too many no calls in their favor. I guess tou can’t rough a passed named Burrows and I guess holding in Bengals d line is within the rules. DPI also only is illegal against the away team it seemed like. Also gotta love when the game gets stopped after a failed 3rd down attempt and gets replayed with a bunch if time added to the clock. I guess in the end the NFl got what they wanted Mahomes/Hurts match-up, doesn’t matter how much they had to put their thumb on the scale they wanted 2 young QB from to check boxes.

  122. Quit your crying…the NHL referees have put their whistles in their pockets during the playoffs for decades. Nothing is called. Maybe the NFL is going that way.

  123. The Bungles O-line was holding the entire game. What is the point of pointing out ONE missed holding call?

  124. It was a blatant hit out of bounds. It was clearly intentional grounding as the ball never made it passed the line of scrimmage. The 3rd down replay the official was blowing the play dead. If KC would have converted the 3rd down and then had to replay it the pathetic bengals fans wouldn’t say a word. It had no effect on the game as KC punted. What an embarrassment of a fan base,

    ——————-

When you cut training camp down by a couple weeks, eliminate one preseason game, and eliminate two day practices, there is not enough time to go over a lot of the situation‘s that need to be got over in order to avoid a lot of the dumb plays that showed up throughout the season.

  126. All this legit complaining about the refs….anyone offer a better way to officiate??? THe Game that has gotten so fast its beyond the physical & judgement capabilities of these zebras

  127. Plenty of calls were missed on both sides. I am not sure what the solution is though. If the referees accurately called games, you would have probably about 60 penalties per game, and the fans and pundits would then scream about the games taking too long.

  128. And, the missed holding call on Burrows’ 16 yd scramble??? Or the DPI not called on the Chiefs first drive? Or the ……..? You can play this game for every game ever played.

  129. NFL did not want small market Bengals in the Super Bowl that is why most of the calls went the Chiefs way.

  130. This was the same crew that blatantly helped the Chiefs win in week 17. I was so sure that that game was fixed, I refused to watch since then. If the NFL wasn’t behind this why would they put that same crew in this game???

The Cincinnati market size is 36th versus the 33rd KC market size. Also, Cincinnati fans thought the league rigged things for the Buffalo who’s 54th. Try another excuse.

Put down the tin foil hat and realize your team was not good enough. The bengals had multiple opportunities to win the game and made multiple mistakes to lose the game.

  133. The ref who gave the Chiefs the do-over is the same ref who threw the last flag to give the Chiefs the win. I think he may have also been the one who called a defensive holding penalty to give the Chiefs the automatic first down after the do-over. I wonder how many other penalties he called against the Bengals. Might be worth looking into.

  134. I don’t care for either of these teams.

I do care about the league shaping the narrative.
And whether actually they did or not it sure does seem to look like they or someone did. The better stories, the bigger markets.

We’re all marks that got played by the carnies.

Yes the hit out of bounds was blatant and a legit call but Orlando Brown was holding Hendrickson for 4-5 seconds and neither would`ve mattered if they called the BLATANT block in the back on the punt return that set up the whole scenario. So be a fan and be happy but when you get a gift be gracious instead of blaming others for doing the same thing you would be doing if the “missed” calls went against you. being a fan doesn`t mean you have to be a hypocrite.
To act like that missed call didn`t have an effect on the game when the Chiefs would`ve been starting from their 22 instead of the 47 is an embarrassment to everyone with eyes!

  138. There is usually some form of holding on every play and almost always some level of illegal contact (> 5 yards downfield) on most pass plays. If they all got called, its a flag per play and the game is useless. So the ‘solution’ is judgement calls. Kudos to the refs for making mostly decent call at game speed, at field level.

  139. The NFL is sucking more and more every year. Apart from my own team, my interest is becoming marginal.

And the last time a team got an extra 3rd down due to a clock was….yea not in my lifetime.
    ===================================================
The all-22 replay clearly showed the official running in and waving his arms to halt the play prior to the ball having been snapped. It is no different than when a play has seemingly occurred and the ref then announces that a timeout had been granted prior to the snap. And yes, these do happen with some regularity. The fact that we have Cindy fans complaining about the correct administration of the game demonstrates their bias and puts into context all of the NFL/referee conspiracy theories being floated.

  141. If anyone really believes they “missed” a holding penalty that lasted 5 seconds then you deserve the 2 weeks of Andy Reid vs Philadelphia hype the NFL is about to spoon feed you.

I will happily eat it up and ask for seconds.

Jokes aside, I kind of wish we could do away with holding. Let them block/rush by any means necessary…

  142. Bengals fans out here sounding like Bills fans. It’s the refs, no it’s the weather, no it’s injuries. Missed calls happen. Bengals shot themselves in the foot with the late push out of bounds. Why did he have to extend his arms and push Mahomes? It would’ve been an OT game if not for that.

  143. Im amazed at how many ppl here legitimately believe that the “refs” on the field are officiating the game. The calls are coming from a room in New York…you can watch the refereee stand there with a blank look on his face like hes listening before ge turns his mic on to talk. Gambling has ruined our favorite “sport” its the new WWE. Time to find a new pass-time

  144. This game ends the debate as to whether NFL games are fixed (and so many fools betting). I’ve never seen anything like how the field slanted (vertically) in the Chiefs favor in the 4th quarter. It’s too bad too, Patrick Mahomes legacy is now forever stained. BIGGEST FIXED GAME IN THE HISTORY OF SPORT.

  145. Why is everyone complaining about the “extra third down” when it resulted in a net gain of 6 yards and a punt a few plays later? Did that cost Cincinnati the game?

  146. Bengal fans have taken up the mantle previous held by the whining Pats fanboys….suck it up….you lost! Bad calls on both teams so quit crying it makes you look like losers.

  147. The fix was in. The referees did everything they possibly could to ensure Kansas City won. They werent even apologetic about it most of the calls in the 4th quarter were ridiculous. KC didnt convert on 3rd down and they were given a do over. That has never happened before. The Bengals should be in the Superbowl the NFL has become a disgrace

  148. The biggest problem with the non-calls is that far too often it’s so one-sided in any given game. The same goes with pass interference calls and non-calls. It’s making games unwatchable.

  149. Dez Caught It. And 10 years later we STILL have the problem with officials directly dictating the outcome of games.

    —————————————————————————————————
EXACTLY THIS: 4 sacks in the like the first 5 minutes…THEN WHAT? Great coaching changed the Bengals and there were no more sacks. Bengals CAME TO PLAY!! and had a chance to win it in the second half…UNTIL, Chiefs given 5 downs to convert a first down and still did not, oh but the refs can give a first down by penalty.

“Chiefs took over and wont he game”??????? Exactly when did the Chiefs “take over.” They barely hung on in an intensely close game. A single call or two decides these kinds of games these days. It used to be a single “PLAY” or two decided these games. Not anymore, not since Vegas took over!!

    ===============================

Yes, there’s holding on most plays. The problem is that the refs see only one team committing the penalty far too often. I’d like to know how many time the Chiefs were called for holding last night and how many times the Bengals were called for it.

As a Phins fan, I have no dog in this fight.

  152. If Miles Garrett didn’t get held almost every play, he’d have 40 sacks a season. And I think that is why it’s not called. Protect the qb’s by allowing holds, let them get smoked, or call every hold and have every offense be 3rd and 30. The NFL knows which of these sells tickets, even if it annoys everyone.

Hey Scott do you have a link to this? I’ve been looking all over and haven’t been able to find one. Reason I’m asking is neither Romo nor Nantz saw any officials to the point where Nantz said live on the telecast “Couldn’t they have a ref waive their hands or something…” to let the players know they play had been stopped!.

  154. I am no Peter King but Why doesn’t someone tell the truth and criticize the NFL about the Ref Crews they choose for Playoff games?
The League advertises it is all about”Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” and then in every Playoff game they choose a team of referees who, for the most part, never worked with each other all season. So why is anyone surprised about the inconsistency of the calls?

Games we’re Badly officiated on many levels but frankly the League doesn’t much care as people still watch and the money continues to flow. They are not forced to be accountable to anyone. You have to wonder why the Owners as a group do not demand a change in the way the Ref crews are graded and assigned. Yesterday the Two best crews from the Regular season should have been selected to works the games. But they are All Star crews put together. This is a recipe for mistakes.

I can guarantee you if Goodell or any of the Owners were scheduled for brain surgery they would not want an Operating Room crew who hadn’t worked together before!

It’s kind of refreshing to seem someone with a “voice” authenticate what most fans are already thinking. It’s not gross incompetence, it’s blatant favoritism bordering on downright cheating.

NO! Mike DID NOT SAY THAT AT ALL!!!
    MIKE’S POINT IS:

    Officials consistently fail to call

    (1) Holding and (2) early tackles movement

in order to make it “easier for quarterbacks to operate by balancing out” [the fact that] “defensive linemen are bigger, faster, and/or stronger than the men trying to stop them…”

The elephant in the room is that no sport is more officiating-dependent than NFL. There’s WAY too much judgment in critical, outcome-determining calls. Human perception magnifies “bad calls” against us and minimize “bad calls” for us. Then, “Officials cheated my team! We should have won!” dominates Monday.

NFL is sport, but entertainment is a primary consideration. Officiating can still be “fair” if consistent. Fans complain, but is calling EVERY the answer? Officials simply have WAY too much to watch for and WAY too much judgment. “Fans” that can’t handle that and entertainment considerations can switch to sports with no official judgment.

It’s annoying to hear “LET ‘EM PLAY” one day and “CALL MORE HOLDING!” the next.
ALMOST as annoying as hearing the losers complain about the refs.

  158. In all honesty the Chiefs are entering the realm of possibly being one of the all time great teams. The Packers of the 60’s, the Steelers and Dolphins of the 70’s, the 49’ers of the 80’s & 90’s, the Redskins of the 90’s, and the Patriots of course who will go unmatched. The Chiefs are marching that direction.

  159. One of my friends just used the “I have no dog in this fight” (the new most most overused expression) to try and explain how he is unbiased and a fan of neither team, to justify what he saw yesterday. The part he left out was he bet money on the Bengals. Vegas doesn’t care who wins. They adjust the lines to try and achieve what would amount to an even payout if any of the 3 outcomes happen (cover, win, underdog win). So no, vegas doesn’t care who wins because ultimately they take 33% of all bets and use 33% from the losing bettors to pay the winning bettors.
Only degenerate gamblers and crybaby fans think the games are fixed.

  160. Key touchdown pass plays for Bengals missed obvious holding calls committed by Bengals tackles against Clark and Karlaftis and Jones.

    Cry me a river.

  161. I have long been a proponent of the argument (Belichick is the quoter) of it being a teams job to not let the refs affect the outcome. But this time it was a bit surreal. One ‘huh?’ thing after another and it did steer the game to a point for that last play. And as far as officials missing stuff, the hold this story speaks to was not a brief thing. It was perpetuated for several seconds and was in a place that more than one ref should have seen it. I get it that none of this is proof, but that sure ‘looked like’ the officials steering a game to a desired conclusion. I wont even get into why, only say that I saw what appeared to be a concerted action in a specific direction taking place.

  162. I’m pretty old and definitily have read stories of judges, politicians, police officers, corrections officers, building inspectors, health and saftety inspectors and just about every profession on Gods Green Earth getting paid under the table to rend a favorible decision. I’ve never understood why the subject is taboo when it comes to underpaid NFL officials and the billions of dollars placed on bets. Cinci was a 20:1 Superbowl longshot before the season started. KC was about 5:1. Who do YOU think Vegas prefers? This game was blatent and there should be a quiet investigation or the rubes are going to do less betting.

  163. You can look at every close game in the history of the NFL and find one missed penalty that could have changed the outcome of the game. Nothing to see here
