It looks like former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore won’t be out of a job long.

Shortly after word of Moore’s departure broke on Sunday, there was word that the Chargers planned to speak with him about their offensive coordinator vacancy. A report on Monday indicates things have moved beyond a conversation.

NFL Media now reports that the Chargers are expected to hire Moore to run their offense. He will replace Joe Lombardi, who was fired after the Chargers lost to the Jaguars in the playoffs this month, and the hope in L.A. will be that his arrival results in bigger and better things from a unit that was not productive enough despite the presence of quarterback Justin Herbert.

Moore will get a chance to catch up with the Cowboys next season as Dallas will make a visit to SoFi Stadium during the regular season.

  1. Watch your back, Kellen.
The head coach has zero personal accountability and likes to blame blowing a 27 point lead on the offensive coordinator.
Seems like a great guy to work for.

  2. Win-win for all.
Jerry gets to be GM/Head Coach. McCarthy the OC, Quinn the DC.
Chargers? Great hire, unfortunately they’ll keep Chargering…..

  3. Years of little to no progress in Prescott’s game doesn’t seem like a good thing to make your promising young QB go through yet another coaching change for. But maybe a change of scene will do everyone good.

So much for the Rooney Rule.

Moore is their 5th interview for OC.

  5. This will save his career. He might actually get to be a head coach for someone other than Dallas now.

The Chargers have interviewed at least 5 candidates for their OC position. At least least two of the candidates were ethnic-minority.

  7. Chargers were 12th in points scored and 22nd in points against. They scored 30 pts in the playoff game. The defense needs to change more than the offense

  8. The problem in Dallas is not Dak, it’s what the Cowboys are paying Dak (similarly it’s what the Vikings are paying Cousins). If Mahomes, Rodgers, Allen, Burrough, etc are worth $50M (just under ~23% of cap space, then Dak is worth about half of that. The relationship is not linear, but close. Dak, like Cousins, is an average to slightly above average QB. You might be able to win with him but you need a lot more help than teams with guys like Burroughs, Mahomes, etc. Ergo you need a lot more cap space. Jerry doomed the Cowboys, until they get out from under that contract, by falling to public pressure to sign Dak at whatever cost. As for Moore, I get the feeling that Dak’s bloated stats racked up as the Cowboys tried to catch up in games, are going to fall, big time.

  9. This could be fun to watch. Moore comes in as the clear heir apparent to Staley’s job. Meanwhile, Staley blames somebody else when he can’t find his car keys. That relationship is bound to become frosty.

  10. Mike McCarthy and his play calling? Oh and Daks 15 ints while missing 5 games? Yeah, fire Kellen Moore. Lol

  11. Moore will have all offseason to install his “genius” package of 4th down calls. Maybe Ekkler can snap and block better than Zeke?

  12. Chargers’ fans, be prepared to have your stars completely eliminated from the game on a regular basis. Let’s just say in-game adjustments are not Moore’s specialty. And don’t forget, he learned everything he knows about offensive game-planning from Jason Garrett. Let that sink in…

  13. But but but this will be Herbert’s 50th offensive coordinator in 4 years. How can the Chargers be expected to live up to their expectations with all of these built-in excuses. Am I right, Bolt Nation?

  14. So Moore couldn’t get past the second round of the playoffs, gets fired, then gets hired by a team that can’t get past the first round. Makes perfect sense.

  15. I didn’t like his play calling against the 49ers but overall he’s been great the last three years. It’s not his fault Dak throws stupid interceptions. Good pickup for the Chargers

  16. Oh gag me. What a failed organization. Thought they would get Brown from the Rams, but alas no, Chargers do what they do, fail at every attempt to be a decent team. One step forward two steps backward for them goes along with the Spanos legacy of dreadful hires.

  17. Hope THAT plat from THAT drive doesn’t show up in a Chargers play. And given track record, I don’t trust Staley to make sure THAT doesn’t happen.

  18. Looks like Staley will be gone by week 8 and Moore installed as interim HC and eventually as HC leading to five more years of mediocrity.

So, if Dallas paid Dak 20 million less, they would be in the Super Bowl? Dumb and ridiculous. There are so many ways to deal cap space making it almost irrelevant, if teams want to do it. Look at the Rams. They paid everybody and their brother to win that championship, and made Kupp the highest paid receiver afterwards! For some reason, people think cap space equals championships. No, great players and coaches do. And don’t give me NE and Brady. That cheap team never paid anybody. They would jettison a great player when it was time to pay him and have Tommy bail them out in the playoffs.

The Rooney rule only applies to head coaches. Moore was not hired as the head e”

In 2020 Rooney Rule was expanded to coordinators and GM candidates. Also expanded to 2 external ”diverse” interviews for head coach.
