Chiefs’ rookie class has made a huge impact

When the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill last offseason, many wondered whether they could maintain a Super Bowl-caliber offense. As it turned out, the Hill trade was a big part of building their Super Bowl-caliber defense.

The Chiefs picked up additional first-, second- and fourth-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft in the Hill trade, and those picks contributed to an outstanding rookie class that has made a huge impact for the Chiefs this year. (The Chiefs will also have additional fourth- and sixth-round picks in this year’s draft from the Hill trade.)

Veteran Chiefs cornerback L'Jarius Sneed was knocked out of the AFC Championship Game on the fourth play, and for the rest of the game, the Chiefs had three cornerbacks, all rookies: first-round pick Trent McDuffie, fourth-round pick Joshua Williams and seventh-round pick Jaylen Watson. They also had a rookie safety, second-round pick Bryan Cook, logging significant playing time. With all those rookies playing against a Bengals offense led by Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, the Chiefs’ secondary could’ve been boat-raced out of the stadium. Instead, they played very well.

“It’s crazy how those things work, but the kids stepped up,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the game. “They didn’t lose their confidence. I was optimistic, but you don’t know how the journey is going to go. Here we sit and they did a good job.”

It wasn’t just the rookies in the secondary stepping up. Rookie defensive end George Karlaftis had a sack. Rookie running back Isiah Pacheco was the Chiefs’ leading rusher and third-leading receiver. Rookie receiver Skyy Moore had three catches in the AFC Championship Game, while rookie linebacker Leo Chenal led the team with 22 special teams snaps.

When you trade a player like Hill for draft picks, you need to hit on your picks. The Chiefs did, and that’s a big reason they’re in the Super Bowl.

  1. Reading about how well the young db’s played in a championship game makes me nostagic for the days of Dwight Hicks and the Hot Licks during the ’81 Forty Niners magical season.
Hicks was a 2nd or 3rd year guy IIRC. The “Hot Licks” are Eric Wright, Carlton Williamson and all-time great Ronnie Lott

  2. Cap hell, lol. Chiefs only getting better. Funny this was supposed to be a rebuilding year after losing Hill, hitchens and the honey badger. Can’t wait to see the results next year.

  3. It is amazing what competent management and coaching does for a team. Hopefully the Chiefs will get everyone back when the tackle the first team in Snoopy Bowl history to not have a starting QB.

  4. Draft & play. No reason to sit them for years at any position other than qb and even that is questionable with the way some rookie qb’s play.

  5. What an impressive draft class. Chiefs GM Brett Veach killed it. These kids have played a lot of snaps all season and have played Great.

  6. The only reason why they didn’t get roasted was that the Bengals line was in shambles that game. They got roasted in their December matchup before Cincinnati had their wave of injuries that took out 3 starting linemen.
Chris Jones and Frank Clark gave those guys a huge reprieve.

  7. Lol Bengals fans don’t even know their own team. In the December matchup they scored 7 more points then the championship game, burrow was 25/31 for 286 (almost identical) what killed us was perine running it down our throats. Which you couldn’t do with a depleted o line.

  8. It only makes the victory over the Bengals more amazing. Joe Burrow feasted on rooky DBs to tie the game.

  9. The refs fault! Check out the article regarding the rip rule which nullified the holding on Orlando Brown, pushing Mahomes two steps out of bounds will draw a flag every time, they got 5 downs, but the ref clearly tried to stop the play didn’t matter to the drive or outcome.

Injuries fault – a limping Mahomes, best CB going out on the 4th play. best LB going out in 3rd quarter and 3 receivers going down during the game.

    Please keep bringing the excuses!

  10. So the bungles o-line backups aren’t as good as KC’s rookie CB’s? What’s your excuse for Cinci’s defense? KC had their 1,2,4 receivers go down in the game and won it with 2 guys with less than 10 catches on the year. Imagine taking ownership of just getting beaten by a better team. Which KC clearly is…. Talk is cheap, those checks didn’t get cashed and you left with an L. Enjoy 2 weeks of hearing about the better Chiefs team. Win or lose KC has a SB in the last few years. Burrowhead’s Bengals are still bungling.

  11. In years past, Andy has always shown a reluctance to start rookies too soon. Especially on the offensive side of the ball. This year, he threw his rookie defensive players out there almost from day one. Slowly they’ve been getting better as the year progressed and seem to finally be hitting their stride.

  12. You forgot the TD that got taken away from KC by a non hold that was called. Crappy refs worked both ways

Awww, let ‘em be. Bungle fans goin’ on fumes. Not worth the time to straighten them out.

  14. The staggering amount of delusion that it takes to think that a narrow win that came about with a lot of questionable calls is somehow indicative of anything other than an unearned victory is hilarious. And yes, having 3 starting offensive lineman that were injured late in the season is a much bigger disadvantage than having ‘rookie’ corners who have just completed a full season.
In a tightly contested game, like all the Bengals/Chiefs matchups have been, small advantages can tip the balance in an other wise even contest.
Enjoy the Super Bowl Chiefs’ fans, hopefully it won’t look like your team’s last appearance.

  15. Oh so that’s how they won. They had the advantage of players on a rookie contract. Damn that draft, right Mr Beane?

  16. I love the brilliant people that always go to the “Bungles”! Undoubtedly, they are whitty intellectuals…after all, taking the word “Bengals” and making it “Bungles” is the pinnacle of humor. And it is SO original! And don’t you masters of humor let your parent’s lessons about name calling get in the way of your absolute magic. Please don’t stop. You are amazing. And don’t you let anybody tell you otherwise. And thank you for allowing us lesser mortals bask in you brilliance!

  17. This is nothing new, Veach has been killing the draft since he started. This class was by far his best, though. It’s why we all laughed when everyone claimed the Chiefs were going to be in “cap hell” because of Mahomes’ contract (which now looks like a complete bargain) and why we’re right back in the Super Bowl with no signs of slowing down. In fact, the Chiefs have ample cap space next season and a ton more picks. They will only be even better next year.

Even later when they got Don Griffin and Tim McKyer.

  19. Combination of great GM AND great coaching. Obviously picking talented players is important. But the great coaches know how to quickly get the best out of their raw talent. Same picks to another team with mediocre coaching would likely lead to mediocre rookie seasons.

  20. love the brilliant people that always go to the “Bungles”!

You do the exact same thing with “Squealers”.

You forgot the block in the back on the punt return.

    Said all the Raven fans.

  22. I guess I owe an apology to Broncos and Raiders fans, who I thought were amongst the whiniest fan bases in the NFL. I have changed my mind… I have never seen a collective fan base that is a bigger group of crybabies than Bengals fans. We’re almost a full 2 days after the game and there isn’t a Chiefs article on here that doesn’t have Bengals fans crying about “the refs” still. Bad calls and no calls happen to every team in every game… including against the Chiefs in this game in pivotal moments, as well as last year’s AFC championship game. Good lord, try to move on.

  23. It’s so strange. Burrow was down starting lineman last year and they won and no one said anything. This year they lose and it’s refs and his linemen that were the issue. Nope. You got Spagsed. He out coached your coaches. Period.

    Cool. Now do “Burrowhead”.

  25. Bengals fans, clearly the most pathetic fan base in the nfl. Never won a superbowl and probably never will.
