Joe Burrow on Bengals-Chiefs trash talk: Makes football fun, it’s an emotional game

There was plenty of trash talk between the Bengals and Chiefs before, during and after the AFC Championship Game, but Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says that’s not an indication that there’s any lack of respect among the players.

Burrow said after the game that he thinks highly of the Chiefs and their players and accepts that for now, it’s the Chiefs who have bragging rights.

“I just think that’s what makes football fun,” Burrow said. “It’s all love at the end of the day. They know the respect that we have for them and I know the respect that they have for us. It’s an intense, emotional game. Things like that are going to happen, but I think that’s why the game is fun.”

The Bengals and Chiefs have now met in two AFC Championship Games in a row, and Burrow said it’s safe to say they’ll see each other in plenty more big games in the years ahead.

“I think you can expect that. We know the kind of team they have, the kind of quarterback they have, and the kind of coaches they have,” Burrow said. “We expect to be back there and I think they do too.”

  1. Joe Cool is legit – an annual dumpster fire of a franchise is now built to contend. Trash talk and all!

  2. The Chiefs players sure are pounding their chests about being 1 and 3 against the Bengals. You’d think they’ve already won the Super Bowl. Can’t wait for the Eagles to bring the big mouths back to earth with a resounding thud. Both the big mouth players and their big mouth fan base.

  3. As a Chiefs fan I dig Joe Burrow and the Bengals, just not as much as the Chiefs. Fans were nice too. That being said, GO CHIEFS!

  4. I love the fact that Cincinnati finally has a quarterback who is confident and can back it up. I’m sure everyone’s going to call him arrogant again but being confident in your skills and expecting to win isn’t being arrogant it’s just how it is

  5. Joe Burrow is one of my favorite QB’s but with all the talk going on, I wanted them to get humbled!

  6. Yea the Bungles show-up every 10-15 years. They get full of themselves but never end-up winning anything.

  7. Burrow is completely wrong.
You’re supposed to talk in trite expressions and boring cliches in order to make rivalries grow. Otherwise people’s feelings might get hurt. Tears may even be involved.
    Boooooooooring.
Can’t wait for the next round between these two teams next season.

  8. 100% great statement from Joe Burrow! This is what rivalries are.
This will be an epic rivalry for years to come. As a Chiefs fan, I admit that in order for it to be a good rivalry you have to win some now and then, at least we did that. Truth is all 4 games between thaws two teams were decided by 3 pts……about as close as you can!

    Who Dey
    Go Chiefs

  9. It’s funny that he didn’t point out that he literally did none of the trash talking. He said “we expect to be here, we expect to win every game every year”. He didn’t come up with burrow head, he didn’t say he mahomes daddy. None of that was him.

  10. Don’t kid yourself Chiefs fan. If it wasn’t for Ron Torbert and whoever was in his ear piece you’d be making snacks Super Sunday

  11. The league is desperate for a new superstar now that Brady is washed. They’ll do anything to give Mahomes his second SB.

  12. Don’t kid yourself Chiefs fan. If it wasn’t for Ron Torbert and whoever was in his ear piece you’d be making snacks Super Sunday

Funny the Bengal coach felt the team that made plays when they had to, but he knows football and is not a whiner…might want to emulate his lead.

What delusion! The Bengals allowed 5 sacks, QB threw two picks, was gifted a Mahomes fumble, A Pacheco TD called back, got one TD against rookies DBs with the #1 receiving corps in the league, all while getting embarrassed by a QB on one leg and you expect the refs to bail you out? Burrow, enjoy missing the playoffs next season, the window is slammed shut! Can’t wait to see the Cincy meltdown, gonna be good.

  14. Pride goes before destruction. All of the mouthing off, and arrogant nonsense can soon turn bitter in your mouth if the chips don’t fall your way. Hey Bengals, Cancun on 3. ♥

  15. BurrowBabies still crying after the loss. Take the L and move on. Bengals had the ball twice very late in the 4th with the game tied and couldn’t get any points. Better team won.

  16. Bengals offensive line was spent. Rookie db’s on the Chiefs hung tough. That’s why the Chiefs won. Trash talk motivation helped too. GO CHIEFS!

  17. Mahommes made the plays when he had to… and when he didn’t, the refs made sure he did

  18. Burrow joins a long list of AFC QBs who think they’ll all be the one to rival Mahomes for years to come: Lamar Jackson, Allen, Russel Wilson, Watson, Tannehill, Tua, and Herbert, Trevor Lawrence last week, Burrow this week. At least Jackson won an MVP.

  19. Cinci never led, gave up 6 sacks, 2 interceptions, no running game, rookie DB’s shut down Cinci’s high end receiving corps, Chiefs lose their 1st, 2nd and 4th WR during the game and they still put up enough to win, Pat throws for 325 on 1 leg. Cinci’s was lucky KC was so banged up.

    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Dream on, Mr “Make NFL Great Again.” AFC alone has at least 4 or 5 QBs way ahead of TB’s curve. They can all do things now TB never did.

    ——

Jackson is a dynamic player but can’t stay healthy. His game has him taking too many hits that will likely prevent him from duplicating his MVP season. He missed more than 5 games each of the last few years and hasn’t been available for the playoffs when they qualified. He is 1-3 in the playoffs as.a starter. Of all the players you named, Lamar has the worst playoff record at 1-3

The fanboys and girls (on either side) are missing at lease half the fun of watching these games. These men are warriors and watching them battle is amazing. I’m a Bengals fan but I can appreciate the hell out of Mahomes, Kelce et all (even though I have been known to yell at my tv and call out a few names). Plus all this negativity is bad for your soul.

Oh another one of the growing herd of Burrows Babies mouthing off…again. Your team lost be a man and pull up your soiled baby britches and move on your team has a great future with a great leader…be more like him and grow up.

They did. Joe has the ball with a tie game and choked. He didn’t get it done. Mahomes did.

Is that the best Cinci nation can come up? The only people who care about their lifetime record is the fans of the team that loses. The Chiefs won the last game and are going to the Superbowl and the Bengals will be watching from a couch. That’s all that matters. If that Burrow vs Mahomes all time record makes you feel better then great but its absolutely meaningless

  27. When the clock reads 0:00 in the Super Bowl and the Bills or Cinci have the lead, I will believe one of them can win it. Until then I won’t.

Hate to say it, but that Mahomes injury was the equivalent of Big Ben being devastatingly hurt every week.

It was embarrassing. Mahomes had no injury designation. Keep up with this narrative that Mahomes was seriously injured. That is insulting to all the other players that also play dinged up without making a big deal about it.

  29. The league is desperate for a new superstar now that Brady is washed. They’ll do anything to give Mahomes his second SB.

Mahomes will never be as good as TB12. TB numbers since he turned 40 are better than Mahomes. Passing yards, TD, completions, and SB wins.

  30. For all the talk about the refs, where were you guys when the Bengals were throwing illegal blocks on the fumble and runback for the score against the Ravens? Without that missed call, there is a very good chance the Bengals never make it to the AFCCG. Anyone? Anyone?…..crickets.

Did Joe have fun after the game?

    Yes, he probably did.
I’m sure he was disappointed to lose the game, but also mature enough to understand his team can’t win every game. He even acknowledged that the Chiefs have an excellent team and are well coached, and that they were the better team that day. He still gets to play the game he loves, expects to be back in the conference final again next year and will now sign a contract that provides generational wealth.
Burrow is bright enough to know that he’s very fortunate, he’s been blessed and he’s very thankful. So yeah, Joe was just fine thanks.

We don’t need to defend Brady any more. He did something unprecedented. 7 Super Bowls. Playing at a high level for so long and still going.

Mahomes is pretty special. 5 Straight AFC Championships from his first year and 3 Super Bowl appearances. If not for Brady he might have 2 More Super Bowl wins.

I think it era has switched and people will say Mahomes is better or whatever. Doesn’t matter. Getting to 7 will still be extremely difficult and we are unlikely to ever see it again, but it will be fun to watch the next generation try.

The league is desperate for a new superstar now that Brady is washed. They’ll do anything to give Mahomes his second SB.

What a shocker, coming from a Pats fan. Still bitter that Brady left.
The league is in better QB shape now than it’s been in years. Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Herbert, Lawrence, still have Brady (totally not washed up) and Rodgers (PITA but still very good) plus a solid QB draft coming up as well. The next “superstar” is the least of the league’s worries.

  35. Let’s see…Joe Burrow is missing 3 out of 5 starting Offensive Lineman. The Chiefs win by 3 (with the Bengals scoring 20). Mahomes didn’t have a good Offensive Line in the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They couldn’t score a SINGLE touchdown. The ONLY team in Super Bowl history to fail that badly on offense. So who did better under similar circumstances? But that line of reasoning requires thought. Chiefs fans and players should probably stick to crowing about their 1 and 3 record against the Joe Burrow led Bengals over the last 13 months.

  36. Joe Burrow is the bomb, to get to the next level (beat the Chiefs in the conf championship) I think they need a little more flexible and innovative play calling. That seemed to be mostly Burrow dropping back and looking, not enough use of Mixon, tight ends, and some of the lesser known skilled players getting rotated in to throw off the defense.

  37. Any trash talking the Chiefs did was after the game and that was in response to the Cincinnati trash talking including the mayor’s before the game.

Again? That 1-3 Chiefs record against Burrow just got us in the Superbowl THIS year and the Bengals and their fans are home and still can’t quit crying. No matter how hard you scream, kick and shout everyone knows you still don’t have a Superbowl victory and your “Wins” are meaningless at this point.

    ======================================
    =========================================
I would take Jackson over any of the QBs mentioned except Burrow maybe. Jackson has had the best two individual seasons of any of them in 2019 and 2020. Playoff record is irrelevant when you consider Peyton Manning started 0-3 while Mark Sanchez was 4-1 but the Worst playoff records of the group mentioned are Watson, Herbert(who also lost a “play in” game last year against the raiders) and Tua. As far as injury Burrow, Watson (2x) and Herbert have had major injuries that required surgery. There is only so many times you can be put back together again. Jackson has not. Not to mention Tua who has the most serious injury history of them all and has not played a full season since his junior year in college. Jackson also has the least amount of help around him on offense and its not close. There is little doubt in my mind that if Jackson played they would have been in Arrowhead Sunday.

  41. Of all those QBs aside from Mahomes, who has won a SB and been to two?

    All others pale in comparison.

  42. I’m a casual football fan, don’t get into the x’s and o’s, but it amazes me how often Mahomes delivers a pass to Kelce, when the entire population of planet Earth knows that is the likely call. I’ll be cool to watch them go against the Eagles’ defensive backs, who are super freaks in their own right.

I see some people attributing the Bengals’ loss to their injury-laden offensive line; that certainly was a contributing factor, but you have to have quality line depth because injuries are inevitable. The GM should focus more on building quality roster depth, and less on making “splash moves”, i.e., throwing big contracts at the likes of Beckham, Jr.
