Pat Freiermuth: It took Kenny Pickett a bit to get going, but he showed he’s the real deal

Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth played with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during his rookie season in the NFL and there was no question about who the leader of the offense was when Roethlisberger was in the huddle.

Freiermuth’s second season looked different. Roethlisberger retired and the Steelers opened the season with Mitch Trubisky as their starter. Trubisky gave way to first-round pick Kenny Pickett in Week Four and Freiermuth said on Roethlisberger’s podcast that Pickett did not initially command the same kind of attention from the rest of the offense.

That contributed to a 3-7 start to the season, but Pickett found better footing from there and the Steelers won six of their final seven games. Freiermuth said that Pickett’s improved comfort level was obvious in every respect.

“He was just so much more confident and so much more urgent and knew what he was gonna do,” Freiermuth said, via SteelersDepot.com. “So it took him a little bit to get going, but he showed that he’s the real deal.”

The Steelers didn’t make the playoffs, but the strong finish to the season and the progress that Pickett showed are reasons to feel optimistic about where they stand as the offseason gets underway.

  1. What good team did he beat again? He beat teams that were below 500 or using backup qb’s and threw more int’s than TD’s
He is 4th best QB in AFC north.

  2. Pickett will be a good QB for Pitt. Crazy to think a guy with his talent will likely be the 3-4th best in his own division.

  3. Generally it takes a couple years for a young QB to get going. Pickett will also take a couple years to really start figuring things out. We saw that he started dominating late in the season. I don’t think he’s anywhere close to a finished product. He might still be playing at this time next year.

That could well be but he still can beat the Ravens who don’t have a QB just RBs playing QB. Like the way you put in the backup excuse like a real baby…LOL

  5. LOL

Ya I did that too when thinking about the Pats second losing season in the last three. I guess it must be all those chess lesson BB took….right? lOl

    ______________
They didn’t have losing seasons. They won every game except for the ones that Roger Goodell cheated them.

  7. Yeah Pickett has two or three good drives vs bad teams in Nov and Dec. Not a Pitt Panther homer like many in here, and need to see better success in red zone, where hlthey settled for way too many FGs. And if anyone think he’ll be better than Burrow, Jackson, or Watson, they need a serious reality check.

  8. He had a good year. Had teams known he was going to have the type of season that he had, he would have been drafted well before the Steelers had a chance to get him. I am glad he wasn’t.

  9. He absolutely is the real deal. That comeback win against the Ravens – the passes he threw – under pressure, in motion, right on target into very small windows. Same with the Colts game. Never gets flustered. Time will tell whether he will be as successful as Bradshaw or Roethlisberger, but he appears to have “it”.

  10. Darn tooting, he’s the real deal. It builds confidence to hear those kinds of comments from someone who was in the huddle. If he didn’t really feel that way he probably would have tried to make some kind of bland comment that was neither a positive or negative and left everyone to read between the lines. If Pickett can take over the offense and keep Matt Canada’s affect to a minimum, maybe they’ll have a better season.
