Trent Williams doesn’t rule out retirement: It does get pretty grueling

49ers left tackle Trent Williams wore an orthopedic boot on his left foot and used crutches Tuesday. He called the injury “very minor.”

The season, though, took a toll on Williams, who would not guarantee a return when asked if he was considering retirement.

It’s a long season,” Williams said, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. “And having two long seasons back-to-back, it does get pretty grueling for a 34-year-old guy like myself. I’ll be 35 when the [2023] season starts. You do kind of think about what’s life like after football. I’ve done this every year of my life since the second grade.

“You do get to that age, especially at the end the year like this, as exhausting as it was. And still not getting quite where you want to be. I get it. You get to that age. But, honestly, I’m just taking it one day at time, and we’ll see how that goes going forward.”

Williams signed a six-year, $138 million contract in 2021 and is due to make $39.45 million in base salary over the next two seasons. He remains at the top of his game, having made All-Pro each of the past two seasons.

But Williams, a 12-year veteran, admitted the grind of a season is wearing.

“I’d be lying say it didn’t,” Williams said. “Yeah, it does. It isn’t hard to get up for NFC Championship [Game], or playoffs or anything like that. But, yeah, the day-to-day grind does get pretty redundant [after] doing it for a long time.

“But I’m blessed. I’m blessed to have played this game for as long as I have. And whatever God has in the future for me, I know I’ll have it. But to answer your question, yeah, it does get a little like a rerun almost.”

  1. Meanwhile, the rest of us work about 30 more years after 38…. Not faulting the guy, he’s awesome and earned what he’s been paid. But saying that to people, lots of people who won’t ever make $1 million dollars, for 45 years of 40 hour work weeks just kind of smacks us all in the face.

  2. There’s literally nothing he said that was tone deaf. Anyone offended in any way by what he said should probably stop being so sensitive about nothing. Their work weeks are far more physically grueling than the average person, in fact, MY job is more physically grueling than the avg person and I don’t have a thing on football players in comparison. But if Williams does come back, which I have a hard time believing he won’t based on that contract, he should be suspended for body slamming K’Von Wallace because he was sad the eagles whooped that ass. That could’ve seriously injured Wallace. He got slammed harder than the hit that knocked Johnson out, smashing the back of your head on the ground is no joke. If the league is serious about concussions, he’ll get a game.

  3. Trent slammed Wallace after Wallace was pulling on Deebo’s facemask. Go back and watch the video of the brawl. He was protecting his teammate. Wallace deserves a suspension.

I get what you’re trying to say here, but you also have to understand how much of a toll football takes on the human body. Most people will still be in “decent” shape in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Meanwhile the vast majority of football players are going to be suffering from debilitating injuries from their playing days. Look up Earl Campbell and how he’s doing. Look up Joe Montana. The golden years for most people is after they retire when they are 65, but for football players, their golden years are closer to 40.

  5. Beat it fatty and go find your favorite buffet and pull everyone out of the way until you are at the front.

  6. Sounds like someone who knows he’s never going to win a SB with Coach .500 in the driver’s seat.

  7. Over the past four years, you played like you were retired. Inconsistent, stupid, and you showed your true self in the last game you played. Move on, clown.
