Is this retirement the last retirement for Tom Brady?

On the occasion of the Second Annual Tom Brady Retirement, many are wondering whether this one will take.

There’s a reason to think it will, if we’re will to suspend disbelief and accept as truthful the things said by Brady himself. (Then again, Brady has said that 90 percent of the things he says can’t be believed.)

During the December 26 edition of his Let’s Go! podcast, Brady said, “Well, I think next time I decide to retire, that’s it for me. So whenever that day comes, we’ll figure it out.”

Brady added that he won’t spend time thinking about retirement until after the season ends, at which time he plans to take his time.

“I think what I really realized last year was you gotta be really sure to do that,” Brady said. “I’m going to take my time whenever that time does come.”

So he took all of 16 days from the completion of his last game to his announcement. That doesn’t seem like a lot of time, especially if he truly didn’t contemplate retirement during the season.

Four weeks earlier, Brady said after an overtime loss to the Browns, “I’d rather lose and play than not play at all.” Given that the Buccaneers had only six regular-season games remaining at the time, Brady sounded like someone who was inclined to keep going.

Of course, nothing he has said is binding. He can retire and unretire and re-retire and pre-retire. Some won’t truly believe he’s done for good until one (or maybe two) full seasons go by without him playing.

  1. He loves to play, but the Bucs NEXT year are going to be an even more miserable experience than this last year

  2. Some of you, or A LOT of you need to get a gd grip. He unretired one time. Once. And everyone from the OP of the article on down has some sort of weird PTSD over it. I hope he does unretire now so he haunts your dreams forever

  3. He’s done. He seems embarrassed that he broke his word last year and doesn’t want to be “that guy” who keeps changing his mind. Even if he regrets his decision, my bet is that he stays retired.

  4. The Raiders would take him but they have no defense obviously it’s not desirable for Brady.

  5. Brady is 3-3 in Super Bowls outside of spygate and deflategate…this is not GOAT material.

  6. Honestly, wouldn’t be shocked either way.

If SF wants him for a year or two, I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see him give it a go. Downside being, they would have to admit the draft haul they gave up for Lance was a waste. Shanahan and Lynch don’t seem like the mea culpa kinda guys to me though-so I doubt it happens.

  7. GOAT? Please. Maybe most accomplished. It just goes to show you how important creative cheating is.

Peyton Manning was the best regular season QB of all time.
Joe Montana was the best playoff. Super Bowl QB and overall QB of all time.

Brady is the most accomplished. Much easier to win when you always have great teams and elite coaching on your side. Nobody benefited from that more than Tommy. Except for this past season. Coincidentally he also had his first a losing record this past season. So weird…

I’ll believe it once he has submitted his retirement papers to the league office!

He’s not going to do that right now unless he wants to stick a monster $35M dead money cap hit right up the Bucs backsides.

  10. He’ll try to get his wife back, if that doesn’t work by training camp he’s on a new team

I’ll be fair to Tommy here. He benefited from all of that plus a trash pile of a division…but he also took advantage of those favorable circumstances as well as anyone possibly could.

Ugh… gag me with a spoon I said something nice about Tommy. lol

‘Only’ 3-3 means you went to 6. I don’t care who you are, that’s pretty damn good. Never mind he went to and won 4 more. And I don’t even like the guy!

  13. I hope he comes out of retirement… to sign a one day deal and re-retire as a Patriot. Should have never let him go. GOAT.

  14. He will definitely stay retired. Got a Superbowl after New England (thanks to a PI call on an uncatchable ball with no interference that allowed Tampa to run the clock out), so that’s an incredible accomplishment. He played 1 season too many. However, by doing so there are zero regrets, because he knows now he played until the very end. He won’t wonder, what if. Wish Brady the best for him and his family. His personal life is personal.

Cause that one play won the game and the superbowl. Moron.

  16. Oh no. Now we’re going get at least one article a week stating that Tom Brady is still retired but will he change his mind.

  17. For those morons of you, making excuses why Tom isn’t the GOAT, let me remind you, not all the numbers that will never be broken, but how and why he always had great teammates around him., First of all, for all those yrs winning Super Bowls, he was never the highest paid QB, why? because he chose to leave enough on the table to get better players around him! Other well known names, chose to take every last $…Next, even though you are the best player on the team, when you are always the hardest worker, (go ahead, ask any of his teammates) They work harder because he does, all I can say, is sour grapes to all you losers that have to justify why you always lose

  18. Any chance he reached out the teams that are a “QB away” and got no love back? No sense to stick around for a rebuild, hence the quick decision?

  19. As long as Brady’s friend Guerrero and TB12 keeps Brady in playing shape, there will always be the threat Brady will be coaxed out of retirement for the right team and roster. Of course, if his ex-wife is finally over her snit at Brady’s failure to obey her every beck and call, then she might throw on her nighties to entice the guy to stay retired. Too bad the Bradys kept their soap opera mainly hidden as the surface details sure seems entertaining.

  20. Let’s write the script:
Tua goes down in week three,Skylar Thompson plays in weeks four and five, then Brady takes over in week six to start for the Miami Dolphins. If I were the NFL I wouldn’t schedule either Dolphins/Patriots game until mid season just in case they can get two shots at Brady versus Bellicheck.

  21. Brady changed his mind last year about retiring and earned less than he would have at Fox. In exchange he angered and lost his beautiful wife, left his kids with a divorce wound/scar that lasts a lifetime (ask my daughter about that…) and had his first losing record as a starter.
    Way to go Tom!

  22. He won’t retire until he’s done with his “Stayed Too Long Tour” turning my stomach wearing silver and black. Maybe he will take us to the playoffs and we can win a close game when the refs call a tuck rule late in the 4th.

  23. I’d be very surprised if the 9ERS don’t call and he reconsiders in about a month.

Been a long season for all these teams and players. Brady would been best taking time away to free himself mentally and physically but, only he truly knows what’s best for him

I’m sure it’s much easier to take less money when your wife makes $25-30 million per year.

  25. I dont see the point of him making this announcement so early or making the announcement at all he could have just waited but i would expect he returns even if just to fill in for injured qb

  26. Hope it’s not the end lol, I lost a bet to one of my dumber friends and I may never live it down

  27. Of course, Tom Brady is the GOAT. He’s been on the biggest stages the most and won. As far as pure QB skills and field gerneralship, probably not the best. But when you talk about adding in leadership, preparation and a little luck on your side, nobody beats him. In totality, if I’m picking a QB for my team, it’s TB12 all day, everyday.

  28. If your team cheats, you can’t claim that any success arising from said cheating is legitimate. Congrats on a fine career, Tom, but Montana’s 4-0 is better than your 3-3 (outside spygate and deflategate) Super Bowl record.

Not to mention 4-0 Terry Bradshaw

It’s not just his SB record. It’s his clutch play in the biggest moments. Nobody was better. His passer rating in Super Bowls clears Brady by something like 30 points. ZERO ints in Super Bowls. And Montana never benefited from rules favoring passing like Brady and every other QB today has.
