Kyle Shanahan doesn’t see “any scenario” where Jimmy Garoppolo returns

The 49ers don’t know who their starting quarterback will be in 2023, but they know who it won’t be. Coach Kyle Shanahan ruled out Jimmy Garoppolo‘s return.

“No, I don’t see any scenario of that,” Shanahan said, via video from the team.

Garoppolo is scheduled for free agency in March.

The 49ers were close to trading Garoppolo last offseason before the quarterback’s shoulder surgery brought talks to a grinding halt. Garoppolo ended up starting 10 games after Trey Lance was injured but saw his own season ended with a fractured foot in Week 13.

Rookie Brock Purdy finished up the year but tore the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his throwing elbow Sunday in the NFC Championship game. If Purdy does not undergo a full reconstruction (Tommy John surgery), then he is expected back in six months.

“He’s continuing to go through that process [of second opinions],” 49ers General Manager John Lynch said. “I think the positive bit of news is that it seems to be consistent that the right approach is that one that’s about that six-month one. Now, everybody will also say you never know until you get in there. Every surgeon will tell you that on every surgery. . . . They’re continuing to work through that process, but we seem encouraged by the prognosis.”

If the 49ers have Purdy back in six months, along with a healthy Lance, they will not seek a veteran starter.

“No, we’re content enough,” Shanahan said. “I know we have two starters on our team right now that I believe we can win with. So when you have that situation, you’re not that eager to go looking around.”

  1. Unfortunately the 9ers don’t have a coach they can win with. Shanny has a long history of choking in big games. Sad.

  2. Funny how Jimmy G is the best of the 3 qb’s he has. Maybe Shanahan should figure out how to block pass rushers with O Lineman instead to TE’s to keep from blowing up his qb’s. Jimmy G should’ve never agreed to re sign with them. All they do is keep disrespecting him.

  3. Right. Because having just two healthy quarterbacks during the NFC Championship game served you so well.

  4. That’s crazy. I’ve never heard of a baseball pitcher opt out of Tommy John surgery for a full tear of the UCL. It is a career ender if no surgery. Maybe they think because a QB doesn’t throw quite as much or doesn’t throw max velocity all that often that he can get by. Purdy needs to think of his career, his best option would be surgery now to get completely past this injury. He only needs to look at what they are doing to Jimmy G to see what any NFL team will do as soon as you can’t perform at peak level. And if he opts out of the surgery, he will likely never be able to be at his peak level again

  5. Won’t take long for Jimmy to find a home, and good for him. Heck, bring him back to the Pats, let Mac grab a clip board.

  6. Didn’t he say something similar about him last year? Jimmy G should tell the 49ers to pound sand. Word is that Purdy could miss all of 2023. Trey Lance is still unproven and rehabbing from a broken ankle, and they gave up all of those picks to get him…good luck with all of that.

  7. Shanahan has become just one of those coach’s you don’t like..at least for me. Not having an active GOOD backup QB was all on him.

  8. This team is too talented to not win it all but the other owners dont care for the Yorks … Shanny cant protect his QBs anyway …

  9. He took the team to NFC Championship using three different QBs. He took his team to a championship 3 of 6 seasons as head coach. His assistants are getting head coaching and Coordinator gigs everywhere.

    Yeah, he’s terrible.

  10. Maybe they ought to trade Lance and a draft pick or two to the Vikings for Cousins. They’d have a reliable starter who never gets hurt to hold down the fort until Purdy gets well, and the Vikings could get closer to being out of cap hell so they can try to add some defensive help.

  11. It would be nice if they could cut ties with T.Lance. Now with Purdy’s injury that option isn’t available. Need to do better than J.Johnson as your #3. 9’ers have just 2 or 3 years left for this championship run.

  12. The 49ers need to carry a veteran backup all season and the playoffs. If they are lucky enough to land a solid veteran such as Joe Flacco they should try for a Two Year Contract. Ideally in games that are over in 4th quarter put in number 2 or 3 so everyone gets reps. For whatever reason SF is cursed with injuries to their quarterbacks. Do Not Temp Fate. Be Smart, #1 & #2 are on rookie contracts. They can afford 10-12 million per season on a veteran (2 seasons).

  13. That’s not a wise statement to make so early. It’s based on the assumption that all goes well with Purdy’s surgery and recovery, and his on field performance after, and Lance stays healthy and can also perform at a decent level. What if they trade Jimmy and things don’t go as planned with Purdy and Lance? It will be akin to taking ‘One step forward, two steps back’ for the Niners. Another wasted year, unless now that Brady has ‘officially’ retired, he plans on trading Jimmy for someone like Rodgers.

  14. Even by NFL standards this is a pretty cruddy way to treat a player. Karma will always get the last word. I’d love to see Jimmy G in Tampa.

  15. Purdy is not being very smart in putting off the operation, just as he wasn’t very smart with his decision making in his last 2 games 😏
I have big doubts about him, being a Franchise QB

As for Jimmy G, he’s made of glass and about the only thing he can do, is hand the ball off, terrible QB

  16. I knew Kyle Shanahan was stupid but good lord. Jimmy is by far the best of the quarterbacks the 49ers have right now. Purdy was a mirage and Lance is a flat out bust. If not for Jimmy getting hurt so much he would already have signed another major contract with Washington by now. The only backup to Brady I ever saw that remotely grasped the concept of the offense for the Pats. Albeit with some stupid double coverage turnovers and holding on to the ball longer.

NEWS FLASH: Jimmy G is an unrestricted free agent, so they not only can’t trade him, he’d never stay after the way Shanny has dissed and mistreated him the past few years.

  18. Shanahan is too emotional in big games to see clearly. He totally loses his composure and loses site of adjustments, discipline, and game management. He can take you to the dance, but can’t dance. He is the worst kind of coach; a teaser…

  19. All these people saying Jimmy is the best QB on the team do not know what they are talking about. The 49ers offense was much better under Purdy. Night and day. It wasn’t even close.

  20. It’ll either be Cousins or Rodgers starting for the 49’ers next year. It’ll depend on if they want to Lance yet or not. The do he rides the pine behind Rodgers. They don’t they trade him for Cousins.

The 49ers have six players due to make over $16 million this season. Now add Kirk Cousins salary. Even with saving some money by Jimmy and Lance leaving they would still have some extensions to do and players they wouldn’t be able to retain.

  22. Uh, Purdy got hurt in his first year. Jimmy G’s been done dirty. He’s going to have success in his next team. I wish him the best.

    ———————-
Yes, but this year Jimmy has a say in where he plays, so he is right this time…

  24. Jimmy Glass did not exist before he became Shanahan‘s QB. Wait where he goes next and if there will be any reason to call him Jimmy Glass.
At the moment we have Brock Glass and Trey Glass in the 49ers QB room and I‘m curious which QB will want to join the 49ers to get the Glass moniker attached to his first name and become a member of the Glass Brothers. Shanahan is the finest QB slayer among head coaches, but unfortunately he‘s slaying his own QBs instead of the opposition‘s QBs.

riggedkangaroocourt and daphne49er should get together and slide down rainbows together while wearing their rose colored glasses. Shanahan has had some success but he also went 6-10 twice and 4-12 and not to mention his famous flame outs of 28-3, 20-10 vs KC, and 17-7 vs the Rams. That’s setting the bar for best coach ever.

  28. Maybe it was Jimmy that told Shanahan he has a bad case of anal glaucoma….He just can’t see his butt ever again in a Clara uniform.

  29. Niners have no front line QBs right now and will NEVER win a SB without one. Case closed.

  30. Remember when Shanahan took over the niners and #7 was still on the roster and released him?Imagine….

whats dumber the statement or that so many people upvoted. full reconstructive is what will put him out for a year, opting instead for Tommy John surgery is the alternative thaty will put him out for 6 months, the risk is the ligament doesn’t hold, and a person can end up needoing full reconstructive anyway.

  32. Say what you want about Jimmy G and his injuries; he’s been nothing but class through this whole Shanahan tossing him under the bus for 2 years.

All he’s done is compete and play hard when asked even though Shanahan has done him dirty from the beginning.

Lance is a bum and Purdy might not be ready til the 2nd half of next season.

  33. Jimmy G aka “Mr Laughs and Smiles in Street Clothes While Your Team gets Smashed” won’t be back.

If the 49’ers could somehow rescue the Vikings by taking Kirk Cousins off their roster, PLEASE do so.

  34. Jimmy G stinks. He throws 6 yards passes to the best group of skill position players in the league and they do the rest. No other team would get so much better with their 3rd string QB. Look at how the much worse the Ravens were without their starter.

  35. Jimmy G will have a number of teams coming after him so I doubt he will end up back in NE, but he should have been there the last two seasons. Not trading him back to NE before the 2021 draft was a mistake. He’ll be offered more money than the Patriots will probably want to pay. NE also has Zappe, and if they like him, they won’t have enough roster spots. It’s possible they would carry three QB’s but they prefer to carry two, and have one on the practice squad. They won’t be able to put Zappe on the practice squad. He’d get snatched up immediately, just because. So unless BB is not happy with Jones or Zappe, or he feels one is expendable, Jimmy won’t be back in NE. The Raiders might be attractive to him, but cap space may be an issue. There is Carolina, Tampa, New Orleans and Atlanta all needing a QB (he could win the division immediately…Atlanta has a ton of cap space in 23, the other three teams are in the red). Washington and the Colts both have little available cap space but maybe could manipulate their way to getting it done…but it would be “cap magic.” The Texans (would knowing new HC Ryans be a factor?) have the cap space. Then there are the Jets, and he knows Saleh, but they are in the red as well. They just hired Nathaniel Hackett as OC and Rodgers is gushing over him….but the money is not there for Rodgers either. The Buccaneers are waaaay in the red. The Patriots and Seahawks could pull it off if they wanted to.

A team to keep an eye on, and I said this last off season, is the Ravens. They could make it work a whole hell of a lot cheaper than they can make Lamar work. They’d have to move some money around, but it would be cheaper than Lamar, and Lamar’s running days are coming to an end. Too many injuries. Are they supremely confident he can throw them into a Super Bowl?

Just looking at cap space, one would think it will have to be Atlanta, Houston, New England, Seattle, or the Ravens. Las Vegas, Indy, and Washington are deep outside shots. Carolina, New Orleans, and Tampa are not realistic.

A sneaky pick would be Green Bay, if they can trade Rodgers. It would clear up the cap space, and they could sign Jimmy at half the price.

    More will be revealed.

  36. Jimmy G might be stuck with the Colts or Jets in the near future. At least it is a good living.

  37. I just heard breaking news that Jimmy G was quoted in response to this statement by Kyle Shanahan:

“I wave my private parts in your Auntie’s face.”

  38. Trey Lance is their starting QB to begin next season unless they sign someone else. What if they’re 10-0 when Brock Purdy comes back and is 100% healthy? What if they’re 7-3? 3-7? There’s no need to get into all the hypothetical scenarios right now. Plenty of time to figure it out. One thing I know for sure is Kyle Shanahan can win big without an elite QB, and that’s something very few of the greatest coaches of all time have ever done. Trey Lance has more talent than anyone, but as we’ve seen with Tom Brady, physical skills are not required to win in the NFL. Mental skills are. Lance hasn’t been tested. He might end up being the best QB in 49ers history. Those chapters haven’t been written.

  39. No JimmyG salary? That is two first tier OLinemen for salary cap purposes. Maybe they can keep people from getting destroyed.

  40. I wonder if the picture of J.G. on the sideline smiling and laughing while Johnson was getting his head handed to him has anything to to Shanahan’s position

    —————————–
Jimmy restructured his contract before the start of the season to about 6 million, so those two “first tier” OLinemen will either be sub-par backups or over the hill has-beens…..

  44. Pretty good winning % with Garoppolo.

The guy just could not stay healthy. 38 regular season wins as a starter, but 31 regular season games missed.

  45. The young kid is a very talented QB. Can physically do everything at a high level. He didn’t show enough in college that translates to the NFL, so he’s a project. He’ll need reps. But if he works hard, he should be able to do it. He has good coaching. The team is sticking with him. We’ll just have to see how he develops. Lots of talented QB’s started out slow. Then they got better with experience. I’m repeating what was being said about Jalen Hurts just a few months ago. The same could apply to Trey Lance.

  46. Do any of you know how the NFL works? First Jimmy is a UFA which means he holds all the cards unless the 9ers want to outbid everyone else. He’s getting #1 money this time around.

Lance has guaranteed money you can’t just cut him and save money. You’d have to trade him and who would want that contract until he has proven himself.

Same with Purdy he has guaranteed money and right now is injured so if the 9ers cut him it probably fully vests.

    No saving kids.

And why, they might have 2 very good young QBs on the staff. And unless your team is the Bengals, Chiefs or Eagles your team\coaches didn’t do as well as or better than the 9ers did with their 3 QBs.

  48. Let’s face it.

Jimmy G told Shanahan he wouldn’t come back.

Who would play for a coach who complete ignores QB protection and instead sends everyone into the pattern?

Sure he looks like a genius because he simply has more possible receivers than any other NFL team.

But eventually it gets QBs hurt.

6 years as Niners’ head coach.

1 year he was able to make the season with his original starter.
1 year he had to go to the backup.
3 years he had to go to the third string.
1 year he had to go to the fourth (or if you count Purdy going back in) fifth string QB.

Look around the NFL and name ANY team even close to this kind of QB carnage.

    =============

I like coaches who win SBs.

  51. Trey Lance ain’t it. Purdy will be out for the season. Brady retired. Carr? Rodgers?

  52. No wonder Jimmie was laughing on the sidelines when they were getting smoked!Shanahan doesn’t show him any respect!

  53. Shanahan is a running backs coach, masquerading as a head coach.

Geezus, look at his actual record in the NFL. Trying to scarf by on his last name. His father only won a 2nd SB by cheating via salary cap manipulation.

Who’d want to play for the guy at this point. Some rookie starving for a job, maybe…or Jimmy G wanting out from under Brady.

  54. 4 QBs on the roster. 3 of them suffer severe injuries forcing multiple months of recovery. Methinks a guy who can’t figure out how to keep the most important position in modern NFL healthy should be demonstrating a little more humility about his need for quality quarterbacking.

  55. Why wouldn’t you want him on the roster? He righted the ship after Lance went down and didn’t seem to be affected by the outside noise. They want to move on from him so bad but his successful background in that offense won’t let him. Purdy looked good but suffered a pretty severe injury to his throwing arm. We still don’t know what Lance is aside from athletic ability. The coach may be wanting to shut the door but winning football games seems to take a front seat to well laid plans.

  56. Wasn’t Garapolo suited up for the game last weekend? They showed him in uniform and pads hiding behind a water cooler…Guess he wasn’t willing to take one for the team. No wonder Shanahan disowned him…

Well, I dunno about any team but the Shanahans sure seem to have a track record of beating injured young QBs into the ground, then throwing ’em on the scrap pile.

    RG III
    Jimmy G
    Trey Lance?

  61. Trade Jimmy G for Kirk Cousins, straight up. The Vikings will get the better of that deal, for sure. Cousins is never going to win anything, and Jimmy G could help take the Vikes over the hump.

  62. Shanny is a fool, he is going to keep pushing for Lance to start to fulfill some SF goal that started with benching Smith for Kapernick. Seems like they are dead set against winning with a prototypical pocket passer, they want a running type qb who is inaccurate and unproven. I would rather have an unproven immobile pocket passer who can read defenses and get the BAll to their crazy talented playmakers, then someone like Lance.

  63. Jimmy is third on the Niners QB depth chart behind Purdy and Lance. And he’s a free agent. Why would they pay him market value ($20M+) just to stand on the sideline all season? As others have pointed out, that money would be better spent improving the O-line. Shanahan is just being honest. There’s no point in trying to pretend that Jimmy may have some future with the team when he clearly does not.

Do you? Lance is on a very affordable rookie contract. Purdy’s contract ,as the very last draft pick, is next to nothing. Trading or cutting either would be a miniscule cap hit.
