Patrick Mahomes: It’s not about being the face of the league, it’s doing what you can to win

Since Patrick Mahomes became Kansas City’s starting quarterback in 2018, the worst the team has finished has been a loss in the AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes was the 2018 AP MVP and appears headed for his second, which will be handed out at NFL Honors next week. And he was the MVP of Super Bowl LIV, helping the Chiefs win their first title in 50 years.

So as Tom Brady retires, there’s an argument to be made that Mahomes is now the face of the league — that is, if he wasn’t already. The quarterback was asked about that in his Thursday press conference, specifically if he feels any added responsibility.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s not any extra responsibility. I’m just trying to go out there and win football games and win championships and this is the biggest game of them all,” Mahomes said. “It’s not about being the face of the league or anything like that, it’s about being the best team that you can possibly be and doing whatever you can to win football games. The other stuff kind of handles itself and it’s obviously a good part of it.

“If you’re winning Super Bowls, usually you get a little more media and few more commercials, I guess you would say, but at the end of the day, I just want to get in this building, be with my teammates and go out there and win football games.”

If Mahomes adds another championship to his resume next week, his case for being the face of the league will only get stronger.

  1. Who else would it be? Can’t be Allen or Burrow, they havent won anything. Hurts can win and he’d still be behind Mahomes, though that could change if they keep winning. No one’s been nearly as successful as Mahomes in the last 5 years. Rodgers, Stafford and Wilson have won SB’s but not are on a very good path right now. If Mahomes wins another SB at the “ripe old age of 27…. We’ll hear about him being the best ever and how he’ll catch Brady… I don’t believe he will, but that’s what we’ll hear.

  2. I understand hating to play against him, but he has always seemed like a top notch guy, in addition to his insane ability. I really like seeing guys like him, Hurts, Burrow, Herbert as the next generation.

  3. Mahomes is clearly the best QB in the NFL and the Chiefs are the best organization in football.
It takes a Superstar QB to win superbowls but look at the Chiefs draft class this year.
The are in the Superbowl with almost their entire draft class starting.
Look for the Chiefs to be dominant for the next few years…

  4. The league is at its best when there are many faces. Brady, Manning, Ben, Brees etc. That was the best.

Mahomes is on an historic run. 5 straight AFCCGs is rare air with the Patriots and the Raiders from the 70s. Especially from his first year as a starter. Amazing.

We don’t need to manufacture him as the heir apparent to Brady or anything like that. Just watch him play.

  5. Mahomes has a sense of humor and is quite likable–those qualities come through in the advertising he does. He has done things t complete passes that are totally new and some younger QBs have attempted and adopted some versions of some of those techniques. Perhaps most important are his leadership qualities, which can be heard in the manner he has addressed his teammates on and off the field and the steps he has taken in the offseason to acclimate free agents and draft picks to the CHiefs playbook.

  6. Patrick Mahomes,Joe Burrow,Justin Herbert,Josh Allen,Jalen Hurts and Trevor Lawrence are all the new faces of the modern NFL. And all will be successful for their respective franchises for many years to come. The future of the NFL is in good hands with these men.

  7. If Mahomes chokes again and plays poorly in his 3rd straight SB, he’s going to known as a choker and not a playoff performer.

  8. Mahomes is right. This face of the league thing is overated. Remember when Cam was to be the face of the NFL for the new generation? Mahomes is the best QB in the league. Smart, tough, hard working, good leadership, good citizen. That’s enough.

  9. With Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, and maybe Herbert, we’ve got a pretty good crop of QB’s to take the place of the old guard.

Jealous boy. Thank God we won’t ever have to watch a Super Bowl with Mac Jones.

  11. I would just like to note, at least this early, how little enmity compared to the usual there seems to be between the Chiefs and Eagles fanbases. There seems to be an unusual level of respect in both directions.

  12. I would pay good money for Pat McAfee to ask Aaron Rodgers how he feels about the responsibility of being “the face of the NFL”. I would love to listen to the long 7-minute rambling speech he gives as a response.
