Josh Jacobs wants to stay with Raiders but long-term deal “has to make sense”

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs picked the right season to have a career year. He is scheduled for free agency in March after leading the league in rushing (1,653) and yards from scrimmage (2,053) and earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

Jacobs, 24, expects contract negotiations to begin with the Raiders next week, but he made it clear Saturday that he has no plans to give any kind of hometown discount.

“I feel like I’m in the driver’s seat, you know what I’m saying?” Jacobs said, via Tashan Reed of TheAthletic.com. “I control the ship. However it goes, that’s how it’s going to go, you know what I’m saying? So, I’m not too much worried about it, but it’s definitely got to make sense.”

The Raiders, though, could use the exclusive franchise tag on Jacobs at $10.09 million if they can’t come to an agreement on a long-term deal. Jacobs said that would not make him happy.

“Ooh, hero turned villain,” he said. “Hero turned villain, man.”

The Raiders also could use the franchise tag on Jacobs and then trade him. It’s the scenario that led to the Packers trading receiver Davante Adams to the Raiders last offseason.

But Adams hopes to stay in Las Vegas.

“This is where I want to be,” Jacobs said. “I feel like I’ve left my mark on this organization. With the guys in the locker room — obviously, it’s going to be shaken up next year, but I feel like this is home. For me, this is where I want to be, but I’m not going to discredit myself trying to be here, either. So, it’s just got to make sense.”

Actually the Raiders are in the driver’s seat, they can and probably will tag Jacobs.

  2. Nice player. Maybe he can join with Carr and play elsewhere. That’s the way the Raiders roll.

  3. Would not surprise me if they trade him, they have gotten rid of most if not all of the other players the past brought in.

  4. He’s past his prime, RBs don’t hold the same value after year 5 or 6. You’re burnt Jacobs, stop pretending like you ain’t to get more money.

  5. reality will wake you up quickly. Will it get a team or several interested parties? sure. Will he break the bank like he thinks? of course not. unfortunately it’s not a good time to be a RB.

  6. So we need a new QB, new edge, new CB, new S, new RT, new G and now a new RB.

    Great. Fielding a farm team.

  7. Generally only bad teams overpay RBs these days. Jacobs had a great year, 1 out of 5. Cleared his previous best by 500 yards, luckily for him it was his contract year.

The odds of him repeating that next year are slim and none. He is a good RB but smart teams build RB depth and spend their big ticket money elsewhere.

  8. Jacobs turns 25 next week.
To suggest he’s about to decline is ridiculous. Teams shouldn’t overpay for the position, but he’s got more than a couple of years of being a top flight running back.
There are more than few ‘contenders’ where his presence would massively upgrade their chances. Looking at you Buffalo…

  9. No way in hell my Raiders resign him to a long-term deal. Why do you think they didnt sign his 5th year option. Thanks for the great season now we have to move on and sign somebody for cheap money

  10. A team that is a couple pieces away could still over pay or over trade for him. Someone like the bills comes to mind

  11. RBs are only valuable in their first 5-7 seasons. They become less useful after their fifth year on average or more. He will be a decent a RB after that, but not even close to the production level he is now and already has been. Jacobs will get traded to desperate team and fade away just like they all do….

  12. Jacobs is at the end of his prime, he still has trade value on the market. However, he will never better than he is now which is rapidly going to disappear.

  13. Watching Jacobs the past few years has been fun, but I must concur that he is definitely reached his pinnacle and is now on the decline.

Stop letting your personal feelings get in the way of reality. RBs lose their punch very quickly in the NFL. It’s just a fact, don’t cry too much, LOL

  15. pretty difficult to envision anybody still being on the roster prior to the dynamic duo getting here. The brought a case of apple and road maps when they got here to hand out.

I think they only want ex patriots on this roster. The writing was on the wall we we were the only team in the entire NFL to keep 6rbs on the 53 man roster this past season. With that said I would love to see them sign Isaiah Wynn this off season.

  16. This kid is clueless. The RB market has been soft for 15 years. You have no leverage. lol

I would walk from him on principle alone.

  17. He should be paid but have a really big feeling he has a really big payday feeling. He is worth exactly one half of his desire.

  18. He is in a great spot either way but has to forget the money and focus on getting better and staying healthy. Will his hunger to work hard still be there after getting paid?

  19. The tag needs to go away in the next contract or before if owners try to add more games to the regular season. The NFL needs a hard cap that GMs can’t manipulate when they want then claim poverty when they don’t. Guaranteed contracts are coming. Players are going to have to be accustomed to shorter guaranteed contracts while owners are taking on more risk. A three year deal becomes a three year deal with no holdout option.

  20. Why do they always say how they want to stay … then leave for more money? Just say you’re going to the highest bidder. There’s nothing wrong with that.

  21. “Jacobs decline is about to begin. Someone will over pay for him.”
