It’s Super Bowl season. So it’s time for supersized bets to be made on the Super Bowl.

Via David Purdum of ESPN.com, the first reported seven-figure Super Bowl wager for next Sunday’s Eagles-Chiefs game has been made.

Someone has bet $1 million on the Eagles straight up with BetMGM, at -125 odds. The bet will pay, if Philly wins, $800,000. And if the Chiefs win, a million bucks is gone forever.

If people with the money to make huge bets like that want to waste their hard-earned cash, so be it. But if you have the means to casually bet a million on a football game, who cares about potentially winning $800,000 — especially once all taxes are collected?

But, hey, there’s worse things you can do with a lot of money. Like buy a jar of sand for $100,000.

  1. Or a lifetime spent futilely rooting for the Vikings, if you believe time is money. Plus the actual money futilely spent on Vikings paraphenelia

  2. 9ers tears are almost as enjoyable as Cowboys tears. The 9ers tears are way more salty though, surprisingly.

So in other words they threw 1 million dollars in the fire pit.

Oh look, a bitter Forty Whiners fan. They’re a dime a dozen these days. I used to think fans of the other NFC West teams were being harsh by calling you the Whiners but i can see why now.

  4. There was a casino owner several years ago who made a $1 million bet at the now defunct Little Caesars in Las Vegas. This was when a $1 million bet was unheard of. Suffice to say there was a good chance it was publicity stunt that benefited both the player and the book. Can’t prove it but that was general conjecture in the town when I lived there. Now million bets are a dime a dozen in many sports.

  5. The previous headline was that someone paid $100k for a jar of sand from Tom Brady’s retirement, and now this.

If a fool and his money are soon parted, there must be an endless supply of wealthy fools. Can’t wait for my turn!

  6. Great bet right there. Whoever it was should have bet another million on the Walrus letting time expire before using all of his timeouts. He can’t get his face out of that play sheet long enough to realize there’s an actual game happening. Philly by 14

  7. Niner fans have replaced Cowboys and Vikings fans as the league’s biggest crybabies. Funny since they haven’t won anything in 30 years and won’t anytime soon.

  8. That is a lot of money to risk on a game where tye Refs get to use a thumb on the scale to shift the odds.
A free third down and an obvious but uncalled holding penalty or an uncalled illegal formation on a trick “Philly Special” play can easily tilt the contest.

  9. If you’re going to just give away a million dollar, at least donate it to a good cause and get some tax benefits.

  10. The million dollars isn’t gone if the Chiefs win, the casino has it. It doesn’t disappear, the owner just doesn’t collect.

A would bet this guy isn’t a pro. Take the points as you aren’t giving up any key numbers at -2. People with more money than sense. Pros don’t really bet this game any bigger then they would another game. To them a bet is a bet.

  11. As an Eagles fan I’d like to know if this was “smart” or “dumb” money. Then again, maybe it was “crazy” money.

Let’s not be harsh. Your garden variety 49ers fan think 1 million is a lot of money in 2023

Truly believe the Eagles will be crushed in this game. ——————————————————————————————————————————– You should bet your money on the underdog if you are feeling strong !!!
