What will the Jets do with Zach Wilson?

After a disastrous Thursday night start against the Jaguars in December, it appeared that the Jets and quarterback Zach Wilson were headed for Splitsville. Since then, suggestions have emerged that the Jets will keep the second overall pick from the 2021 draft.

The latest report along those lines comes from Jeff Howe of TheAthletic.com, who writes that the Jets “don’t intend” to trade Wilson “because there’s hope he can develop while learning more in a backup capacity.”

Howe adds that the potential veteran starters in New York for 2023 are Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Derek Carr.

It’s possible, as MDS noted on Twitter, that the Jets don’t intend to trade Wilson because they know they can’t. So the choices are to cut him or to keep him.

Wilson doesn’t seem to be jostling to be released, at least not yet. But, at a time when it’s obvious the Jets will be adding a veteran quarterback, Wilson has declared an intention to “make that dude’s life hell in practice every day.”

So what if Wilson believes he has won the job over, say, Jimmy Garoppolo? And what if the team decides to give the job to Garoppolo? Will Wilson be content to sit for a year, playing only if/when the new starter gets injured?

As backups go, Wilson has a low price tag. He’ll make $3.855 million this year. That’s far cheaper than it would cost to add a veteran to serve as the No. 2 guy on the depth chart. Thus, it’s easy to keep him around and hope he possibly wakes up, in lieu of sending him to a new team and risk looking even worse if he becomes elsewhere the guy he hasn’t become in New York.

Still, the Jets need to think about their next potential franchise quarterback. If/when it seems that they’re not treating Wilson fairly, that could make their next “next Joe Namath” think twice about signing a contract with the team. And given that the NIL landscape has allowed the best players to make, and to bank, millions of dollars, it will now be easier than ever for incoming quarterbacks who would be taken early in the draft process to say “no thanks” and mean it, if they’re selected by a dysfunctional organization.

Regarding the possibility of Aaron Rodgers becoming Wilson’s new mentor, some think that would work, given that Wilson grew up idolizing Rodgers. But there’s a reason that the phrase “never meet your heroes” became a cliche.

Really, given everything we’ve seen and heard about Wilson and everything we’ve seen and heard about Rodgers, do we think it’s more likely that they’ll be instant BFFs, or that they’ll eventually become mortal enemies?

Now that I think about it, I want the Jets to trade for Aaron Rodgers. If only to see whether Rodgers and Wilson will become friends or foes.

  1. A backup? A #2 overall pick as a back up? Umm, yeah, that’s not gonna work for his ego alone.

This is a hilariously Jets thing to do.

  2. Some QBs can be fixed through time, coaching or mentoring. But sometimes a bust is just a bust. The Jets need to be prepared to move on from Wilson.

  3. First Rodgers would probably not spend a minute helping Wilson. Its not his job as in Favre did not school Rodgers, it wasnt his job.
Rodgers aint going anywhere unless the Pack Org realizes we cant afford him and keep our core intact, something has to give.

  4. The Jests doing Jets things. They don’t want to admit they made a mistake and are too stubborn to move on.

  5. The Jets doing Jets things. They don’t want to admit they made a mistake and are too stubborn to move on.

  6. Go right ahead and analyze and over-analyze all you want, but sorry to disappoint the Beantown Troll and all the other haters, but Zach is going nowhere. Whomever winds up being the Jets starter next season, Zach will remain as his backup and learn as much as he can about being humble and what it means to be a starter. In a couple of years, hopefully Zach will have progressed enough to become the Jets’ legit starter.

  7. There is no way AR will agree to play for the Jets. If he were to go anywhere it would be a California team. AR is not going to another cold weather team, and he is definitely not a Florida type guy.

  8. Zach has been disrespected all year, especially with all of the goofy stuff at the beginning of the season about an alleged relationship with his mother’s friend. His family has also been unjustly attacked by people who know nothing about them. If I were Zach i would get as far away from the Jets as I could.

  9. There are several teams out there who are laying low and keeping a close eye on the situation. Lots of teams had Wilson rated high, and history shows a lot of cases where a good QB got drafted to a train wreck organization, and eventually became a HOFer after the train wreck team released him. The Jets are historically bad, and they have an inexperienced young coach. The coach was hired because he was the 49ers defensive coordinator, and the 49ers’ defense was outstanding. But, now we’ve actually seen the 49ers defensive improve since he left, and their new D coordinator just got a head coaching job. So now we see the Jets screwed that up, too. But teams that had a high draft grade on Wilson aren’t going to change their opinion based on anything that goes wrong with the Jets, because everything goes wrong with the Jets. The Jets were way screwed up long before they ever met Zach Wilson. Speaking of the 49ers, I’d bet Kyle Shanahan is one who’s keeping a close eye in the situation. And, he realizes better than anyone the strengths and weaknesses Robert Saleh might have in developing a young QB. Kyle knows that every D coordinator he hires is going to get a head coaching job, as long as they have the level of talent they currently have. This is how the rich get richer in the NFL. Years ago the 49ers used a similar situation to trade for Steve Young, who was failing on a train wreck Tampa Bay team. That was when the 49ers had that dream team personnel department, and I’m sure they relied on the grade they gave Steve Young coming out of BYU, over anything that went sideways in Tampa.

  10. Zach Wilson needs to be humbled and rebooted. He seems to have the physical skills to be successful in the NFL. Pretty decent arm. Pretty decent mobility. What he is lacking is the heart and brains necessary to excel. Sitting for a year or more behind a savvy veteran quarterback could be a good start. It would also be helpful to have a qb coach/OC who knows when to be a whisperer and when to scream. his price tag is low and he has zero leverage. There’s no reason for the Jets to dump them quite yet if he is salvageable, that is a win. If he’s not, it’s a sunk cost.

  11. First it makes absolutely no sense to release him, as at worst they need a backup and they won’t do better at that price. And they wouldn’t get much for him in trade based on his performance last year. So it’s a 100% lock that he will be on the Jets next year whether he likes it or not.

  12. That kid has an overinflated ego to begin with, and he isn’t going to make anyone’s life “hell” unless he suddenly starts making progress. He played like an unproven, and unprepared, backup last year, and until that changes he’s not going to be starting for anyone

  13. If the Jets drafted Tom Brady, Peyton Manning & Patrick Mahomes, they would all have been out of the league in 3 years … it’s the Jets

At least BYU gave us QBs Steve Young and Jim McMahon….that’s about it.
    ———
While McMahon won a Super Bowl, he’s nothing great either. There’s only one great coming from BYU: Steve young

  15. The notion that the Jets need to concern themselves with “treating wilson fairly” is absurd. He’s made retirement money and done nothing to earn it. They need to concern themselves with getting professional qb play next year and that’s all.

  16. Zach went downhill as soon as breece hall was injured. And it will be difficult to win back the locker room, so a trade has got to be likely.

Josh Rosen was traded for a 2nd rounder and Sam darnold was traded for a 2nd, 4th, and 6th rounders. The problem for Zach is the jets were loaded with offensive talent even after the hall injury and he did not appear to be liked by teammates.

Conversation probably starts at a 2nd and eventually decreases to a 3rd or fourth.

  17. Wilson: Aaron! I’m such a fan! Welcome to the Jets…is your mother stopping by soon, as well?

  18. I don’t think he’s at all the cancer people are making him out to be. But he’s probably gonna end up in KC for a 6th or 7th round pick. Andy loves project QBs and they’re both mormon and went to BYU.

  19. Kyle Boller 2.0. The jets would be smart to cut bait early and not waste the best years of their defensive talent. Ravens defense deserves more championships during the boller years

  20. What will the Jets do with Zach Wilson, you ask. How ’bout arranging for a luncheon date with Ryan Leaf. They could order some McNuggets and talk about the good times.

  21. I don’t see Wilson as a viable backup. From afar it appears Wilson doesn’t have the personality to prepare as a backup or add support to the starting QB. Jets would be better served to cut Wilson and chalk it up as a learning experience.

  22. I had a dream once.

The Jets lost their final game in 2020 and ended up with the first 2021 draft pick. They took Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars ended up with Zach.

Then the Jaguars hired Urban Meyer. The Jaguars went 0-16. Urb kicked Zach in the arm after he finished kicking Josh Lambo in the legs. The fans burned the stadium down and blood flowed in the streets.

    Then I woke up.

  23. I’m old enough to remember when quarterbacks were drafted with the expectation that they would sit for a few years before taking over. It allowed the young men to learn the speed of the game, how to read defenses, how to be professional, and how to be a leader.
There is nothing wrong with taking the old-fashioned approach when throwing him to the wolves right away didn’t work!

  24. Brett Veach will get him for a 6th, Andy will make him look like a starting QB, they’ll flip him for a couple of day 2 picks and he will go somewhere else, fail and bust out of the league forever.

  25. The problem isn’t just Wilson. The Jets have are ranked second to dead last for offensive line, have limited receiver options, and barely any running game. Sure Wilson played poorLy when he played, but the Jets coaches did the worst thing possible. Throw an inexperienced QB to the wolves with no support around him.

If anyone thinks Rodgers will come to Jets and they will be Super Bowl bound, I want what your smoking.

The Rams are stuck with Stafford and his contract. The Chargers have an excellent QB. The 49ers couldn’t afford Rodgers’ salary and probably wouldn’t want to give up even more first round picks for another QB. So which Cali team?

  27. This kid doesn’t have it and never will. He’s a good example of why these teams take such huge risks in selecting quarterbacks so high because it is hard to find good ones so if you think you found one you have to make big moves to get them. And it is a tossup if it actually pans out

  28. backup? A #2 overall pick as a back up? Umm, yeah, that’s not gonna work for his ego alone.

Actually it reminds me of NKeal Harry a stupid Pats thing to do. See what I did there ThumbsDown6?

What’s funny is, anyone associated with the Chargers, saying another franchise is dysfunctional is hilarious. I still can’t stop laughing at the choke job the, so well run organization that the Chargers are, did this past playoffs. Come to think of it, everytime they’re in the playoffs.
I know the Jets have only won 1 Super Bowl and it was over 50 years ago, but at least they won one. How’s that empty trophy case doing?
Chargers, should be called LA Chokers.

  30. We’ve seen enough of the kid to know hes a bust. Why cant the Jets admit that and move on with Mike White or maybe a veteran QB for a while. Flacco can still get it done.

  31. Love to see him try and make Rodgers or even Carr’s life a living hell. Believe we would have another Jets broken jaw story.

  32. Any Jets bagging on the Chargers for not winning a Super Bowl, is laughable. At least the Chargers actually get to the playoffs occasionally.

Wilson needs to get away from New York and grow up. Maybe he can be salvaged by a good coach.

  33. This makes no sense to me. I’m going to call it top 10 draft pick privilege. Mike White is clearly the better QB. Wilson should’ve even be the topic of any articles. He’s barely on the same level as Kyle Allen and Josh Dobbs. He’ll never be as good as Tyler Heinicke or Chad Henne.

  34. They are not doing anything with him other than keeping for 2 more years due to the ridiculous rookie salary structure and Cap hit. All Rookies should be paid the same. Purdy, the last pick in the draft, is a viable NFL Starter. Wilson, the 2nd pick in the Draft, is not. The entire thing is a crapshoot.

  35. The Jets will they believe in him and are going to retain him, for now. In truth, they’re waiting to see how free agency and the draft shake out, and then will make a decision. If they can find a trade partner between now and the end of preseason, they deal him away for a late round pick. If they can’t, they’ll up and cut him and deem it addition by subtraction.

  36. I see a lot of these QB carousel projections, and many don;t make sense given the cap situation for these teams. The Jets are over 5 mil in the red on the 2023 salary cap as I type this. How would they clear a minimum 46 mil just to clear the 5 mil in the red, clear Rodgers 31 mil cap hit for 2023, and have 5 mil to sign rookies, and 5 mil for in season flexibility. Who on the Jets having the kind of salaries that add up to 46 mil, is going to be cut, traded, or released, and will there be dead money cap hits from those contracts? If the salary cap isn’t real, just say so. It sure seems like it’s not, and the way the media talks about these trades, they apparently believe that too.

The teams that could swing the cap space are (maybe) the Raiders, Ravens, Seahawks, Patriots, Texans, Giants, Falcons, and Bears. More than a few of those have QB’s they might keep (Giants, Seahawks, Bears, Patriots. Ravens) so there may be fewer teams than thought looking for a QB, that actually have the cap space. Everyone else will be trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube to finagle a trade and swallow these massive QB salaries. The Commanders and Colts are light on salary cap space. Everyone else is way in the red. The Panthers, Rams, Titans, Buc’s, and Saints all appear to be screwed and will have to go with Journeyman backups or young draft picks.

The Falcons may be the most attractive place to go financially. They have over 50 mil in cap space. The Bears have more cap space than I’ve ever seen, 82 mil. They could do whatever they want.

Carr and Garappolo are the two QB’s that will be free to sign without compensation, and they don’t work for the kind of cap space most teams have available. Things will get interesting only of one or more teams with a current QB decides to go in another direction (GB, NE, Bmore, Sea, and the NYgz).

  37. First Rodgers would probably not spend a minute helping Wilson. Its not his job as in Favre did not school Rodgers, it wasnt his job.
    ________

And it’d be one thing if Wilson was a great guy who you couldn’t help but like but he’s the polar opposite of that. After spending 60 seconds with him Rodgers would demand their lockers be moved as far apart as possible.

  38. Cutting a player that you have to pay regardless is a dumb move to make, Wilson is a perfectly fine backup.
The Jets should trade for Aaron Rodgers and let him mentor Wilson.

For those that don’t think Rodgers would mentor Rodgers, he already does. Rodgers has no interest in mentoring anyone in the Packers org…he hates it in GB, who wouldn’t.

  39. The Jets will lose with Zach. Given that the Jets should continue to do what they do best, lose, they should extend Wilson at $40 million per year guaranteed for another 15 years.

  40. He’s going to the 49ers. They need a 3rd and likely a 4th QB. What other QBs from that draft are available? Should get those too.

  41. The Jets are amazing. They draft QB after QB after QB and they all fail. Different GMs, different coaching, it doesn’t matter. Chad Pennington was their best in recent history, the first QB taken in the same draft as Brady.
The same old Jets really fits them…

  42. The salary is guaranteed so they don’t gain anything by cutting him. Unless he’s going to be a problem in the locker room I doubt they just outright release him. The first thing is to find a QB. Do you believe in White or go with a veteran like Carr, Jimmy G, Bridgewater etc…? After that the question is his viability as a backup option vs. White if they do what most expect and add a new starter. If he’s going to be the third QB and inactive on game day maybe you try to get a day 3 pick for him. I doubt anyone would offer a day 2 pick but if you could get one do it.

  43. This looks like the definition of “addition by subtraction.” The locker room absolutely HATES the guy and he doesn’t look to be backup material. The backup QB is frequently one of the most-liked guys on the team: He’s somebody who works hard, doesn’t have a big ego, and is ready to go whenever called upon. Wilson is NONE of those things.

  44. I think the Jets should trade Wilson to the Eagles to be Jalen Hurts backup while they develop him and tade him away later.

  45. He has all of the physical tools to succeed but until it all clicks mentally, he will amount to nothing. He needs a lot of work.

A #2 overall pick that got his head handed to him when facing NFL talent. So the hope here is that he would take the clue from that and embrace a chance to develop behind a veteran as an opportunity. Thats actually a smart way to play the situation as it stands today.

The irony if after all that he then gels in GB for an HOF career. Even beats SF a couple times.

  49. a)Rodgers has a contract where he has the say, he will only go to a contender, if he does go, its Vegas with his buddy
    b)Carr ain’t going to be a trainer , he’s only going to be # 1, I see New Orleans
You want a guy to be # 1 for the Jets till Zach either learns or flames out? Jamis Winston would be perfect

That’s some real bragging rights the Chargers got there.
Making the playoffs and blowing a 20 something point lead in a half to, wait for it….the Jaguars. Yup that’s fun.

    Of all people.

  56. I think they do what they should have done last season, bring in Jimmy G to start and have Wilson as the backup. Wilson will be called upon again at some point and they go from there.

  57. They’re not going to trade him because they’re afraid if he does halfway decent anywhere else they look like the same old Jets. They can’t just let him go for the same reason only then it might be with the Dolphins or Pats and it’s compounded.

  58. The kid is from a spoiled rich family. Hes never faced adversity and reminds me of the QB in the movie Draft Day. Jets should have asked him why his teammates didn’t show up for his bday party.

  59. The dude comes off as incredibly immature. It doesn’t matter how talented he may be, immaturity will ruin it all. I think he is a less talented Ryan Leaf. Leaf had all of the talent in the world, but he just couldn’t emotionally get it together.

When Wilson washes out, he could probably get his own gig on Bravo. The title of the series just rolls off the tongue.

  60. My educated guess is that Zach gets cut by the Jets and then bounces around with a couple of teams and then is out of the league within 2 or 3 years. Whatever it is that makes a guy an NFL QB; this kid doesn’t have it.

  61. I think the Jets might not be able to trade Wilson for any value. So, the best thing would be to keep him in a backup capacity after getting a starting-caliber QB. They can always cut him later on, but right now he is a very cheap backup option.
