Brian Flores to get a second interview with Cardinals

As the Vikings pivot from Ejiro Evero to Brian Flores as the top candidate to become the team’s new defensive coordinator, the Vikings need to have a fallback. Because Flores could still fall into the head-coaching job in Arizona.

Via NFL Media, Flores is expected to have a second interview for the Cardinals’ vacancy on Wednesday.

Flores joins Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, and Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as the candidates who will have second interviews. Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn also is expected to get a second interview.

For several weeks, folks around the league have been watching Flores as a viable candidate for the job. He has ties to new G.M. Monti Ossenfort from their days together with the Patriots. Flores also is the exact opposite from former coach Kliff Kingsbury, from a coaching-style standpoint. Many teams are attracted to candidates who provide that type of distinction from a coach who was fired.

Perhaps most importantly, hiring Flores (who is currently an assistant coach in Pittsburgh) would boost the NFL’s legal situation in the landmark lawsuit filed against the NFL and several teams last year. The Cardinals later were added to the case, for their firing of coach Steve Wilks after one year.

The Texans also were added, after they interviewed Flores but didn’t hire him. The argument is that Flores engaged in legally-protected activities by filing a discrimination lawsuit, and that he was overlooked due in whole or in part to those activities.

Hiring Flores will necessarily take some of the sting out of his existing claims, even if they don’t rectify years of alleged (or actual) discriminatory practices. Not hiring Flores could only make things worse for the Cardinals — especially if they hire someone with no head-coaching experience.

  1. Would not be surprised to see Flores as the Cards coach. Especially after what happened to Wilks its not a stretch to believe the league has been pushing for minority HC hires behind the scenes..

  2. I think this guy is a really good coach but he will be way over his head in Arizona. The owners a box of rocks and the quarterbacks not in to working hard. Everyone knows hes counting the days until he can play baseball.

  3. Flores is exactly what the Cardinals need, a no-nonsense HC with experience to tell Kyler Murray the party is over

  4. He’s seemed like the right guy for AZ all along. To have a coach and QB who both have been largely written off and have something to prove, and who will both be hard to dump too quickly (Murray for money reasons, Flores for lawsuit reasons) seems like a good formula for motivation and stability.

Based on Budda Baker’s comments, this is a team with some player problems – they need a kick, not just a milquetoast manager coach.

Add all that up, and it’s Flores hands down.

  5. So basically the Cardinals are being blackmailed to hire Flores.I hope they hire him.And if they still keep losing for 3-4 years….then we’ll know that Flores just doesn’t have it

  6. What happens when Flores fails again and the owner wants to fire him? Flores going to file another lawsuit alleging racism?

  7. The guy is a really great coach. He did great in Miami and in Pittsburgh. His lawsuit has merit. I had hoped the Steelers would ditch Tomlin and hire him.

  8. Trade Mediocre Mike to Arizona for a 1st and 3rd rounder. Make Flores the H.C. in Pittsburgh
Let’s see how GREAT of a coach Trippy really is.

  9. Not hiring Flores could only make things worse for the Cardinals

So you support the use of extortion to force a team to hire a black coach. Got it.

  10. Wow. Interviewing him without hiring him is racism. Guess he needs to be hired now. Anyone that self entitled wouldnt sniff a job for me.

  11. Being a head coach in the NFL is huge but the Cardinals are a poor organization. They have a diva QB that would rather play video games than look at film preparing for games. Sounds like one of the worst jobs in the NFL.

  12. Flores only makes sense if he has a slam dunk OC hire he’s bringing with him, the trash of an OC he had in Miami is not welcome in AZ.

  13. Top Flight Coach, but Arizona sports franchises have always been just good enough to be playoff fodder and nothing else…owners not really wanting their teams to be great, too much work involved.

  14. When you say,

you assume lil Kylo Murray will listen, follow and heed.
He won’t. He’s had waaaaaaaay too much success — before Pro’s —ain’t gonna happen. Vince Lombardi himself would not succeed.

Whoever (whomever?) takes the job will fail.

So much discrimination! The top 4 highest paid salaries on the Cards are minority players.

  16. Flores is a good coach. If Kylee won’t study film Flores will bench him. I generally don’t support law suits but what Miami did was beyond the pale. Flores deserves a second chance because he is that good of a coach.

  17. This sort of thing happens ALL THE TIME w/Minnesota. They sit around and wait on individuals that they have interviewed for a given position, then that same individual is snapped up by another team, for the same position.
It happened again just this weekend, as the former Denver defensive coordinator, who was also interviewed by MN, signed to coach in Carolina.
This, along with their chronic inability to win bigger games, is one of the more frustrating aspects of watching this team!

  18. He’ll probably sue them either way. I hope they give him three interviews, then hire someone else.

  19. He’s a DC, not a HC. He completely ignored the offense in Miami and went through OCs and other offensive assistants like Kleenex.

  20. The cynic in me says Park Ave ordered a second interview to stave off the accusations and lawsuits alleging the Ronney Rule is a checkbox-marking dog and pony show

  21. I get the urge to do the opposite of what the previous coach did, but this is not the move you make if you are trying to get anything out of Kyler Murray going forward. Unless Flores is able to turn a complete 180 and suddenly becomes capable of finding competent coaches on the offensive side of the ball, this is a train wreck waiting to happen.

  22. Mini may be down to their third or fourth choice at DC. Although he’ll be the guy they “wanted all the time.”

  23. If he becomes the HC of the Cards and fails miserably then what will they do?!?! Can’t fire him because of the obvious. Flores is not a leader, he doesn’t know how to surround himself with good coordinators and position coaches, and the ones he does hire aren’t top shelf. It’s his way or the highway and Miami all saw how that worked out. Not one single player spoke up on his behalf when he was fired. NOT ONE !! What does that say?!?

  24. There’s been talk about him in Denver, but I’m not sure I’d want that level of drama. Maybe he and Payton can get along though. In any event, pretty much the whole administration that he sued is gone.

  25. You know the Cardinals are so going to hire Flores. The NFL has a Flores problem and the Cardinals have a Murry problem. Flores would really be a 2yr place holder coach until Kyler is movable in a trade where it wouldn’t screw with the Cards too much cap wise. After two wasted/tanked years, kick both out the door at the same time for whatever you can get for either of them. Sorry Card’s fans, you deserve better. Two birds one stone, looks like a match made in heaven.

Try to understand the law. You cannot retaliate against someone who has filed a discrimination lawsuit.

  28. Vikings are losing candidates left and right. I never thought I would feel bad about furring Donatelle but we still gave an empty seat. Not good. We need a good DC to turn around 4-5 years of bad performance in that side of the ball. Pick the right guy and throw money at them. We are going to wind up with everyone’s leftovers. Flores is as good as gone to Arizona.

  29. Buyer beware. Arizona needs to have a top Offensive Coordinator lined up because Flores is one dimensional and only thinks Defense. Kyler Murray doesn’t know what he’s in for if Flo becomes Head Coach. Aggressive disciplinarian who was taught by Belichick to show no love with one of the biggest diva QBs in the game. What could possibly go wrong?

  30. so when the cards fail under his leadership, will it be the fault of racism or ownership throwing games?

  31. Not sure what the Vikings can do for the open DC job, but they should be working to get Harrison Smith and Patrick Peterson off the field and into coaching positions. Plan for the future while they are looking to resolve current coaching and cap situations.

  32. Go as Tua how Flores treats his star QB and let me know how you think he’ll be with Murray.

    good luck with that.

  33. I hope Flores gets the Arizona job. Then, when he alienates everyone working for the franchise up to and including assistant coaches, players and front office personal just like he did in Miami maybe people will figure out race has nothing to do with why he was fired, and why why he hasn’t been offered another head coaching job.

  34. but they should be working to get Harrison Smith and Patrick Peterson off the field and into coaching positions.
    +++++
Peterson is a free agent. Smith will cost $11.7 million in dead money to walk away from, so he’ll be getting run over by AJ Dillon again next season.
