Joseph Ossai not fined for hit on Patrick Mahomes

The Bengals lost the AFC Championship Game after defensive end Joseph Ossai hit Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of bounds. The 15-yard penalty moved the Chiefs close enough for Harrison Butker to kick a game-winning field goal with three seconds left.

Ossai, though, did not lose any money.

The NFL did not fine Ossai for the hit, according to a source.

It is interesting given the NFL fined 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga $4,916 for hitting Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts out of bounds late in the third quarter.

Ossai said he was hoping he could catch Mahomes before the quarterback got out of bounds to keep the clock running but wasn’t able to stop in time before Mahomes stepped out.

“I’ve just got to learn from experience,” Ossai said postgame. “I’ve got to know not to get close to that quarterback when he’s close to that sideline if there’s anything that could possibly cause a penalty. In a situation like that I’ve got to be better.”

  1. The problem is the moment you pull up these QBs will use it to their advantage and tiptoe down the line. They already do. I’d propose legal hits a half yard past the out of bounds line. Kind of like the half step defenders get after the QB throws a pass. Encourage those QBs to get out fast.

  2. Frank Clark received neither a flag nor a fine for knocking Joe Burrow on his rear at the end of the 4th quarter so…

  3. As he shouldn’t have been. It was a clean hit. Unfortunately it was also the quick excuse the Zebras needed to throw the game for the NFL’s chosen one Mahommes.

  4. Of course not because it wasnt even that bad. Vegas wanted the Chiefs by any means

  5. It was a dumb play that cost his team, like Dee Ford of the Chiefs lining up offsides against the Patriots in the AFC Championship. He says he was trying to prevent Mahomes from getting a first down as he was out of bounds himself and pushed Mahomes sideways no where near the first down marker. He dabbled with knocking out an already injured player ahead of overtime. No sympathy for that.

  6. It was very clearly a late hit out of bounds.

But knocking yourself out of the Super Bowl due to your own stupidity is worse than any fine. Maybe he learns to play smarter in the future.

  7. If you watched the play, it should have drawn a flag, but it was below the level of a fine.

  8. No fine for it, but you still are at fault for losing the game. Good luck getting over that. And yes Joe, Mahomes had 2 feet out of bounds regardless of what all the Bungles fanboys are saying.

  9. It may have been a foul but Mahomes definitely flopped World Cup Style. Plus Trevor Lawrence got hit similar to that the previous week and it was not called. Chiefs get the most suspect flags their way that I have seen as a fan. Pats, Steelers, Ravens, and Giants never got such one sided treatment before that I have seen.

  10. Seems some people have a hard time seeing a difference between a penalty and a finable offense. Also seems that a lot of people here imagine bengals fans don’t believe that was a penalty. I haven’t met one person in Cincinnati that didn’t think that was a poor play by Ossai. It’s ok to think the game was poorly officiated and also think Ossai should not have committed that penalty.

  11. While I do feel bad for him, he sort of fined himself…and his team a potential Championship game check…
And TV was gratuitous by the way they kept going back to him sobbing on bench. Once would have sufficed.

  12. Fining him would have been like charging a robber for jaywalking on way to knocking off a liquor store.

  13. What do I know, but I didn’t see anything malicious in it. I saw a guy who was going all-out and seeing the game slip away right in front of him. Whether it was overreaching on effort or a moment of angst or both, it was more playing as hard as he could than anything else.

And no, it did not cost them the game. That game was over regardless, and had been lost at many points leading up to it where the Bengals just couldn’t quite get it together and the Chiefs were always one play ahead.

Both teams will be back. To me, Ossai is the kind of player you want – not many guys care these days as much as he does.

  15. That’s like saying Bret Hart won’t be fined for losing the Montreal Screwjob…

  16. The envy of the Chiefs haters is hilarious on this site. Too many whiny conspiracy theories.. the NFL wants the Chiefs to win, Vegas wants the Chiefs to win… blah blah blah

  17. I’d say he’s been punish enough – cost his team the game in the AFC championship.
He’ll remember that a long time.

  18. Watch the play again, not only was it late but he didn’t even contact Mahomes until Mahomes stepped on the OUTSIDE edge of the yard wide white strip down the sideline. It was absolutely the right call. I get it’s a gut wrencher to have this happen at the end of the game and give the other team an opportunity to kick the FG but this wasn’t some ticky-tack call by any stretch.

  19. Did the officials receive a fine for handing the chiefs the game by missing the block in the back on the punt return and the 2 blatant holds on mahomes last run? #NFLRIGGED

  20. Ossai should not have been fined. Mahones on the other hand should be commended for his flop.
