Brandon Graham: Roster moves showed Eagles were all in on this season

Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and defensive end Brandon Graham were both on the Eagles team that won Super Bowl LII and they are back in Arizona this year to try for a second ring.

Many of the other names on the roster have changed since that night in Minneapolis, including a number of big-name acquisitions this season. The Eagles signed edge rusher Haason Reddick as a free agent and traded for wide receiver A.J. Brown and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson during the offseason. During the season, they signed defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph while also trading for edge rusher Robert Quinn ahead of the deadline.

At Super Bowl Opening Night, Graham talked about the lift that those moves provided to a longtime member of the team.

“It gave me big confidence because you could tell that they was all in on this year,” Graham said. “They started to see some stuff in training camp that they was happy about. They knew we wasn’t far off, so they went out and got Linval and Suh to plug up the middle because we were a little weak in that area because we got hurt in that area. Those boys came right in and, man, they was perfect. The perfect time when they came in.”

Cox was released last offseason as the Eagles moved to avoid guaranteeing $18 million in salary and then returned on a one-year, $14 million contract. The savings helped free up money for General Manager Howie Roseman to use elsewhere and Cox sounded a lot like Graham when he discussed his response to the moves.

“It feels good to know and trust the guys upstairs,” Cox said. “Howie did a really good job of getting the pieces that we need to be a championship caliber team, to be connected, to be competitive no matter what we’re doing. To have those guys on this team, especially this time of year, is very special.”

The Bucs and Rams made splashy offseason and in-season moves on their way to the last two Super Bowl titles. The Eagles will be very happy if lightning strikes a third time.

  1. Played Dallas twice, played Minnesota, played Aaron Rodgers. Yes, this is a great Chief team, but the Eagles didn’t sleepwalk through their season.

  2. No League news just all super bowl talk this is going to suck for a week or so! I will be happy if the eagles win though!

  3. All will be good until you have to pay your qb .. then join the rest of the league struggling with the cap.

  4. They might have gone “all in” from a player acquisition standpoint..but what is the most impressive is that they did NOT go all in financially or by trading away draft picks like the Rams…so this thing they have built can be sustainable until Jalen Hurts gets the huge $$…and even then they will still have a VERY good roster.

  5. During the season, they signed defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph while also trading for edge rusher Robert Quinn ahead of the deadline.

Let’s keep in mind that both parties had to want this to happen. Suh and Linval each are getting paid 2 mill, far below their last contracts but they took it for a chance at a Super Bowl and Roseman correctly estimated that they had something left in the tank to help the team.

Robert Quinn has been borderline invisible since he got here and complained about possibly playing to many regular season games. You can’t hit on every move.

I was really surprised by Cox’s maturity and this probably starts with the team communicating with him that they still wanted him this year but not long term in resigning with the Eagles.

  6. Even with great moves from the FO, Eagles have benefited from an easy schedule and good health. That usually is the ticket to a championship and they should get another Lombardi come Sunday.

  7. I love when everyone says there ALLL IN THIS YEAR…isn’t that the goal for ALL 32 teams?

No doubt they’re an excellent team, but their season did the sleepwalking for them. One Dallas game without Prescott, Cousins on a Monday night where he never wins, allowed the losing-season Packers to score their second-most points of the season, Purdy with a freak injury at the start of the game.

No playoff team was less tested than these Eagles were. And now they get an injury-riddled Chiefs team.

Anything less than a complete demolishing of the Chiefs will feel like when the Rams won – “eh, was this really the best team? I guess we’ll never know.”
